4 comments about Japanese Courtyard Gardens: Photographs.

  1. I work in 1 inch scale with miniatures and want to start a Japanese Garden Roombox. I found some wonderful details in this lovely book and can hardly wait to reproduce them. In fact, I found exactly what I was looking for. My "Japanese Gardener" and my "Geisha" are waiting patiently for their habitats to be created. These are the figures I found that gave me the idea to do a garden and a tea room. It will be a fine winter's project.

  2. This book is by far one the best collections in my library. The pictures alone are worth the money. I can't tell you how much inspiration I extracted for future projects. A definite buy for any gardener.

  3. Very beautiful photos. Nicely printed. Each photos has detailed description. Good for someone who loves Japaense culture, or who just loves gardens. I got this for a gift, but I will have to get some more for other friends, and for me!

  4. Inspiring book. Both traditional and contemporary courtyards are covered

1 comments about Pedestrian Malls, Streetscapes and Urban Spaces.

  1. This book is a good source for the architects and developers who are in business for an open air shopping complex. It gives ideas and examples from different aspects such as development, feasibility analysis and design elements. Case studies include description, development strategy and design features of the project. Probably one of the most useful chapters is the comparative analysis of the examined cases from the points of cost/blocks, land user areas, benefits and degree of success. On the other hand, I think this book should be in color.

3 comments about Ortho's All About Landscaping (Ortho's All About Gardening).

  1. Hi, I'm Jo Kellum, the author of this book. In it, I take you step-by-step through the design process so you can create a yard you'll love. Fancy drawings aren't necessary, but you do need to plan before you plant and this book shows you how. Whether you need a little design advice or are planning a major landscape makeover, I think you'll find All About Landscaping helpful. I am a landscape architect myself but this book is written for everybody (no landscape experience required!)

P.S. Write reviews and let me know what you think!

P.P.S. If you're looking for information about how to pick the right plant for the right place and tons of how-to projects on everything from planting to pruning, check out my latest book: Landscaping 1-2-3 (The Home Depot). There are three versions of this book so you can buy the one that has the best information for your region.

  2. Ok, so I decided to design my own front garden. I get sudden inspirations to do something like this and, typically, buy every book that looks reasonable on that subject that I can find. Despite it's lack of pretensions and humble origin, this book with the single most useful book I found on designing a garden. The entire design process was simply presented and gorgeously illustrated! A Really Useful Book!

  3. This book not only has great information, but also, great ideas. I would reccommend it to anyone that would like get a head start on landscaping their yard.

2 comments about The Architecture of New York City: Histories and Views of Important Structures, Sites, and Symbols.

  1. This is a wonderful book that extensively covers the architecture of buildings in New York, from past to present. Full of interesting background information. I can recommend this book to anyone that is interested in New York architecture. Unfortunately, photographs are kept to an essential minimum. Other than that, it was everyting I hoped for.

  2. I bought this book a few days before my first visit to New York City. However, just reading very first part of this book gave me good knowledge of both history and architectures of NYC.

This book starts with the born of New York City in 17th century, and covers many famous (and not so famous) architectures with about 200 photos taken by the author. It covers Georgian influence of 18th Century, Greek revival of 19th century, the Chicago school...etc. The Art Deco Skyscrapers, such as the Empire State building and the Chrysler building are well described. A whole chapter is devoted to Rockefeller Center. The history of MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) is interesting...

For me, this book seems to have some small shortcomings. This book lacks "up to date" information. (This revised edition was first published in 1994.) Also, as a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, I hope Guggenheim Museum have been covered more.

2 comments about Designing Small Parks: A Manual for Addressing Social and Ecological Concerns.

  1. This book was listed as one of the top 10 books in Planning in 2006 by Planetizen and is a very useful manual. It's fun to read, inclusive, informative, and well-researched.

  2. I am on a review committee for a local park, and got this hoping it would help. Unfortunately it is more of a text book that attempts to cover all bases without really advocating or advising on how to acheive good park design.
