1. "Landscape Narratives" is a source book for screenwriters searching for thematic ideas. As writer and director, it helps me to decode places as textual landscape of my stories. Inspired by the readings I have written several short films, mostly dealing with the way fictional characters react to landscapes. Chapter 4 discusses time-altering devices found in landscape: jump cut, flashback, fade etc. plot structuring techniques also used in film. It is a joy to reread this classic book as would a traveller journeying home.



2. Potteiger and Purinton team up in what in essence is a cultural geographic survey of the American Landscape. The anthropologic influence of nature is explored. Chapters deal with broad topics such as restoration ecology and urban renewal, and each is seen through the an intensely personal lens. This is a bit of a breath of fresh air, given that similar books in this genre are more about the author's personal philosophy than the true impacts of man's manipulation of nature. Fortunately the Potteiger and Purinton's lens is filtered through the eyes of real characters, characters rich in personality and chalked full of lore.

   The book targets the academic but is quite readable to the layman.

1. I've got 5 pages bookmarked for inclusion in our gardens! That should say it all, but just in case, here goes.

   There are a lot of books with garden decorating ideas out there, but it's rare that you find a book of this caliber. The ideas, the photography and the writing are all exceptional.

   I strongly recommend this book for anyone who loves spending time in their garden.

1. At long last, an authoritative book on garden ornament in America! Barbara Israel delivers a beautiful tome with scholarly punch in her Antique Garden Ornament: Two Centuries of American Taste. Many books exist on gardens and landscape history, but none addresses the issue of the statues, fountains, and furniture used within them with such depth and clarity as Ms. Israel. In addition to the chapters themselves, the catalogue of objects in the back of the book and the list of makers provide a greatly needed reference for this growing field. I highly recommend this book.

1. This is the most comprehensive book dealing with creeping bentgrass management. The author covers all aspects of bentgrass management from disease identification, management and control to the control of annual bluegrass with various growth regulators and chemicals. Unlike other books, however, this one talks about common problems that arise that are mistaken for disease issues and lead to the application of wasted chemicals. If you are a golf course superintendent or a turf student there are two books that you must have; The Turf Compendium and this one. You will not be disappointed.

3 comments about It Happened on Washington Square (Center Books on Space, Place, and Time).

1. I lived for a time, in the Village, during the 60`s, at times in a haze. Therefore I never got to know the Square and her glorious history,so this book gave me an insight to a wonderful place and the many historical events that took place there. It is well written, and the reader knows, the writer has a very close connection to the Village and the Square and Her people. G.F.St.J. Connecticut.



2. This is a lively history of Washington Square Park from its beginnings to its present embodiment. It is also a pocket history of some of the notabale events in NYC itself. The book is written in a highly readable style and filled with pictures tracing the history of the park. A veritable who's who of NYC politicians and artists parade through the pages illustrating the central role played by the park during NYC's development.
   Dr. Folpe thorough research illuminates the text without bogging down in acedemic trivia. This is a fascinating history for anyone who loves New York City or is curious as to how it became the art center of the country.
   I would recommend this book as a most enjoyable and informative read.



3. Folpe spent years going through archives and talking to locals to unearth a detailed history of Washington Square. Her research paid off. This is technically an academic book, but the prose is so engaging and lively that anyone who has even a remote interest in Washington Square will enjoy this.

1. This text is a good beginning one for landscape architectural studies- the first chapter on earthwork is not the latest technology, but valuable nonetheless to understand how it was done before GIS and more sophisticated equipment and methods.

1. Unlike many gardening/landscaping books, this one has *specifics* about different projects, i. e., terracing hillsides, building paths, etc. Much information not found in other books.



2. I agree with the other reviewers that this book is very informative and helpful. However, if you also like gorgeous garden photos you're bound to be somewhat disappointed. There are lots of photos, but they aren't in sharp focus. Sometimes only one flower or a portion of a background picket fence is all that is sharply focussed. I understand blurring to accent a particular flower, but that is not what has been done here. It's more like the shots of middle-aged movie stars where close-ups are in soft-focus to soften their aging. Ridiculous there, very annoying in a book where you expect the photos to be outstanding. Still they show nice composition and groupings.
