1 comments about The Gardener's Handbook: The Essential Guide for Success With Plants.

  1. Ok, I admit I am only an amature, and a week-end one at that, but gardening is my passion. All winter long I drool over gardening books until the weather warms up enough to go out and dig in the dirt. Laying in bed at night, my mind is moving perennials and planting annuals. I have been known to call into work with mysterious aliments on bright sunny days where the cure unfailingly is digging up a new flower bed. Well, these are my qualifications for making a review of The Gardner's Handbook. I have found it to be extremely through, well thought out and easy to interpret. It is my very favorite gardening book. There are others that are certainly more detailed, but no one has covered as much ground in so small a volume as Mr. Buczacki. And the nice handy size of the book is also a plus! This is a good housewarming gift to folks who are first-time yard owners, as well. Happy gardening.

1 comments about Ancient Roman Gardens.

  1. Linda Farrar has produced a gem. This book shows with care, sensitivity and scholarly love what made a Roman garden. She discusses the plants found in the garden but also writes with great skill how the Romans situated statues in the garden. Cicero, a famous Roman politician and writer, mentions in one of his letters how beautifully vines draped over the arms of statues in his brother's garden. Statues were not just placed in the garden but immersed in it; these lived in it. Often pools were designed to reflect the image of a nearby statue and its attendant plants. She also discusses other art work found in Roman gardens. In her efforts to give a feel for the garden she discusses its use: for discussion, parties, meals, play, family work. She discusses what these plants and statues meant to Romans. It was in this book that I learned how much Romans loved nature and how religious they were and how much they were devoted to the beauty of nature around them. Plants provided food, interest and drew in large numbers of birds, bees and butterflies. Roman gardens truly hummed. Linda Farrar's love of the Romans and their gardens flourishes on every page. Any one intending to visit Italy or Pompeii would profit from reading this book. At the end of her book she has excellent suggestions for creating one's own Roman garden.

1 comments about 1,000 years of gardening in New Zealand.

  1. As a Planning Technician at Auckland City Council, Heritage Division, I deal with public enquiries and also internal enquiries regarding heritage matters. Our natural protection includes: Maori sites, natural ecological sites, significant trees and more. With regards to the Maori sites, this book is useful in finding out what sort of vegetation may have been present at the time of the Maori inhabiting that area. Also, with regards to heritage buildings that still have the original trees and what appears to be where are garden may have been, we can also "guess" what sort of vegetation was grown in this area.

We have been lent this book and will proceed to buy it through your site as a reference book.

3 comments about Practical guide to home landscaping.

  1. Alot of information and ideas;didn't care for the black and white pictures.

  2. Tho an older book, the information is as true and up to date as one just off the press. Quite informative

  3. This book is almost identical to previous editions of the book. Although, I have not reviewed every single page, the book appears almost identical, page for page, to a previous edition that I already own. I thought that this updated version would provide updated photos. Sadly, I am disappointed with this version. A book that advertizes itself as an update should have substantive changes that make it different than previous versions, this book is almost a copy of a very old issue that my grandfather owned.
