2 comments about The Art of Zen Gardens.
- The book was used as a guide for a cross-cultural communications class. It was useful and informative.
- This brief work gives a great overview of all of the elements that compose a zen garden. Beginning with a simple history of Japanese gardening, the author then procedes to elborate on each component of a garden and the various ways that they may be employed. The book is filled with useful drawings to help the aspiring gardener, however the all-too-few photographs in the book are less then great. A nice section of color photos showing completed gardens would have improved what is already a good work.

1 comments about The Secret Plan of Canberra.
- Not everyone will agree with the author's viewpoint or conclusions, which is probably the main reason to read this book on the plan for Australia's capital city (by American architect Walter Burley Griffin). Proudfoot argues that the Canberra plan has a geomantic foundation that extends its meanings (and ideological power) far beyond those of its formal design as a mere pattern. The book itself pushes architectural history practically to the limits of its epistemological possibilities. Its complex argument is very readably set out, making this book a fascinating and rewarding experience.

1 comments about The John Tradescants: Gardeners to the Rose and Lily Queen.
- Few may have heard of the John Tradescants, father and son of the late 1500s-1600s who worked for a series of patrons supervising some of the most notable gardens of the 17th century: Prudence Leith-Ross remedies this omission with The John Tradescants: Gardeners To The Rose And Lily Queen. Of particular interest to gardeners, besides the fascinating history and biographies of the two, are discussions of the plants introduced by them, with their original plant lists paired with modern botanical names.
