1 comments about The I Ching: Landscapes of the Soul : Revisiting an Ancient Chinese Oracle (Konemann).
- Frits Blok's hexagram families and "inner meaning" line readings
In " I Ching: Landscapes of the Soul. Revisiting an Ancient Chinese Oracle "
(limited edition through Barnes & Noble, still available ), Frits Blok
gives a
different method of getting line readings which is based on the "inner
meaning"
of hexagrams. As he sees it, the "inner meaning" is gotten by first
deconstructing
a given hexagram into a set of trigrams centered on lines 5,4,3, and 2
and then reassembling these into new hexagrams which are used for the
line readings. This also gives a way of sorting the hexagrams into families
of 6,
one of the 6 being the original hexagram. The I Ching is then presented in
these terms.
Here's his method:
First number the hexagram lines in the usual fashion 654321,
reading from top to bottom, and name these trigrams from
their center lines:
t5 = top trigram of the original hexagram (lines 654)
t4 = (lines 543)
t3 = (lines 432)
t2 = bottom trigram of the original hexagram (lines 321)
Then combine these combinatorially, giving the hexagrams:
t5/t2 =the original hexagram = sixth line reading
t5/t4 = fifth line reading
t5/t3 = fourth line reading
t4/t3 = third line reading
t4/t2 = second line reading
t3/t2 = first line reading
A way of interpreting these generically would be to combine
the meanings of the center lines of each trigram.
