3 comments about Landscaping for Small Spaces (Gardening & Landscaping).

  1. This book has excellent ideas for small spaces... However, "small" in the suburbs is not the same as "small" in urban areas... This isn't the book for you if you live in an urban area and are lookiong for ideas for "tiny" spaces...

  2. Despite being less than a hundred pages, LANDSCAPING IN SMALL SPACES presents many good ideas and perspectives about bringing out the best of small gardens. I liked the viewpoint that even large properties can include small garden rooms. Anyone can benefit from this book.

All of the photos carry their weight in illustrating a point. Many are inspirational & some of gardens so beautiful I wanted to see more of the landscape. I liked the "Four Views of One Garden" segment where four landscape architects from different parts of the country designed different gardens for the same nondescript, small backyard. The results were, as expected, very different and interesting in their own ways. And, there were good ideas in each design worth considering for my own garden.

This book presents brief overviews of many concepts that contribute to "making the most of a limited area" to quote the subtitle. However, I wanted to know more about various techniques and found the brevity frustrating. But, all in all, this book is a good reference for tips on landscaping a small area.

  3. I wish I'd had this book years ago. Not only does it have wonderful photos and ideas, it's a great instruction book for explaining how to deal with small garden areas and what your goals might be. It goes into detail on how to make the space appear larger, what tricks of the eye, plants and techniques should be used to create the effect you want.

3 comments about Balcony & Roof Gardens: Creative Ideas for Small-Scale Gardening.

  1. This book was a disappointment; the illustrations were not up to standard for a book of this kind, the writing was pedestrian and the printing too small for comfort. The writer had nothing new to offer on the topic. There are better books about balcony and roof gardens. Don't waste time on this one.

  2. Lots of ideas but limited to outdoor decor (pots, furniture, accessories, color schemes, etc). Cutesy gets old after a while. Very little guidance on growing plants on balconies.

  3. This book contains very creative ideas for gardening in small spaces. Its give us suggestions to create a very beautiful terrace, balcony, or even small pots. Jenny Hendy gives us many ideas to trelissing, installing water features, choosing the best basket. Its a stimulating book. The photos are so beautiful, that the book is recommended even to those who like, but don't have a garden. I think it's the best book for people who want to transform a small place into a beautiful garden.

1 comments about The Texture of Memory: Holocaust Memorials and Meaning.

  1. After having read this book for my historical anthropology class, I was completely taken by its broad-based approach to analyzing monuments and the histories they possess. To fully appreciate this book, the difference between 'history' and 'the past' must be understood. 'The past' is everything that has already happened. As soon as a second passes, the past has been constructed simulatenously the world over. History, on the other hand, is how people, cultures, governments, etc. choose to present sections of the past. History is a section of the past that is magnified and often made to represent the entire past despite its fragmented recounting. Young does an excellent job of showing how four different countries recall the same events (the holocaust, the Warsaw ghetto uprising, among others) with different and unique results, demonstrating how 'history' differs from 'the past'; each history is a different retelling of a country's perception of 'the past'. He analyzes these methods of remembrance through monuments and the outcome is an excellent analysis of how memory is constructed and interpreted and how personal experience shapes and influences one's perspective on the past, thus influencing their perception of history. The book is well written with many pictures and historical tidbits to place monuments in their proper context (although, after reading the book, you come to realize that monuments have no true proper context). I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the holocaust, theory of history, art history, or cultural studies. Excellent book.

1 comments about Yardening.

  1. Yardening is a great resource for the simple and healthy maintenance of your yard. It includes easily referenced tree, shrub, and lawn care instructions. I highly recommend this book to any one who has things they would rather do in life than yardwork. My yard is the best in my neighborhood because of it! (I live next door to devoted gardeners)
