1 comments about Salvage Style for the Garden: Simple Outdoor Projects Using Reclaimed Treasures.
- I'm always looking for more accessories for my gardens, but I don't like my garden looking like a display for the local garden centers, so I was excited to see the interesting new Marcianne Miller book, Salvage Style for the Garden. I was inspired to create more than one of the projects in this book, and it also helped me think more creatively when I looked at some of the things I already had laying around in the shed.
This book has projects that will please the most sophisticated gardener, as well as projects for gardeners who like a more primitive or country look. Miller and Irwin have an original and creative sense of style and many of the projects in this book are very different from the standard copycat projects everyone else seems to have. Planters, benches, trellises and projects that are just plain fun fill the book.
As the book progresses, you will see some of my favorite projects, such as a huge pinwheel, which I am very excited about making for my children's garden. You will learn step by step techniques for creating garden ornamentation like a glass hanging planter or a window leg table from pieces that you can find in your local salvage yard or pieces you may even have in your own cellar.
All in all, there are over forty ideas with step by step instructions. There are also many more ideas to inspire you to create you own garden art and structures in the galleries of additional ideas.
The best thing about this book is that it is not just a pattern book for making projects. It is also set up to teach you to look for and use salvage to create your own unique pieces. It is well written, crammed with ideas, and fun to read. The pleasure these women feel when they create a new ornament for their gardens comes through very clearly in this book.

1 comments about Fences & Gates (Southern Living (Paperback Sunset)).
- If you want to build fences and gates you will better buy this book. It provides you all you need to build a fence. Although, if you are expecting a lot of illustration of gates and fences, you'll better look for another book.

5 comments about Plan Graphics for the Landscape Designer with Section-Elevation and Computer Graphics.
- This book is ideal for people starting out in the landscape design area.
It has helpful drawings and ideas.
It lets one know the basic instruments one needs to get started.
- i think this the most usfel book for designers to use not only the beginers but olso for the professionals.
- hi chaps, the book it is not too bad it shows you everething about how to design, plans elevations etc... but i bought the book because I was interested in graphic symbols and the wasn't enough so I return the book.
Even tough a good book for a person how is looking the get in the stage of learning the process of drawing.
- This book is great. I am a junior landscape architecture major, and my introductory classes skipped over the important basic details. Even though I've caught onto the basic skills over time, this book is a great reference and I'm still finding new things. This book is very easy to follow and a has a few pages of colored pages so that you can see his marker and colored pencil examples. I would most definitely recommend this book!!
- Great book, this guy knows what he's talking about.
Great design graphics. Great information. All in one easy to read text. Rock on Tony. Did I say this book is great?

2 comments about Garden Design Ideas (Best of Fine Gardening).
- I purchased the book because I thought that anything Fine Gardening put out would be superb. I thought wrong-as a landscaper I'm looking for new and different ideas, Fine Gardenings trademark. If the content wasn't great I thought I could always use the photo's to show clients for ideas- wrong again. The photos are dark and dreary. Again I should have paid more attention to the copy right date.
- This is the first book I've read on the subject of gardening or design, and I'm glad I bought it. As a novice, I'm now going to buy additional books featuring more plans and how-to's of building walk-ways, walls and other hands-on aspects, but this book explained the basics to me of what is important in a garden and what makes gardens pleasing to the eye. It's got a broad range of topics, and there were a few pieces inside that were really useful. I found some stuff relevant to my style for north-east, but there's also information for California-type gardens and open spaces, i.e., if you have several acres. Very inspirational and great for ideas. It starts with site lay-out and the importance of drawing or making a plan and builds from there. It's a series of articles, all well-written.

5 comments about The Four-Season Landscape: Easy-Care Plants and Plans for Year-Round Color (A Rodale Garden Book).
- My wife and I are building a new home on 2+ acres. Our current yard is sort of a four seasons approach, mostly by accident though.
So I purchased a dozen or so books here at amazon to plan the new yard. This one is definitely the best. The approach and suggestions are super. I can really see us doing most of our yard using these suggestions. Thank you Susan! Bob.
- This book is arranged seasonally; each season has its own chapter. Within each of these chapters are various charts suggesting trees, shrubs, perennials, etc. that offer interesting features during that season. Some of the chapters break it down further: for instance, the "Spring" chapter has different charts for early spring, mid-spring and late spring.
Near the beginning of the book is a wonderful section on how to put together a "planting pyramid" for four-season interest. (Hint: You don't start with annuals or even perennials, as so many beginning gardeners do.) Additional design principles and suggestions are found after the "season" chapters. Finally, the book closes with a limited "encyclopedia" of four-season plants which includes some suggested cultivars, cultural details for the plants, what seasons the plant holds particular interest, etc. This section is divided into deciduous trees, evergreen trees, deciduous shrubs, evergreen shrubs, perennials, etc. In all, even if you don't have time to read all of the text, which is a pleasure in and of itself...this author is a good writer...there is still a wealth of helpful information to be found in this book.
- This book has a great approach to landscaping your property. Susan Roth shows how to make the most of your space by creating mixed borders--mixing trees, shrubs, perennials ans bulbs for year-round color and beauty. The idea is to start with a garden's "bones," to create the necessary structure that will make all seasons beautiful. Her plant selection is very good--only plants that provide more than one season make her list. For example a shrub that flowers in the summer, has good fall color, and interesting branches or berries in winter. I have many garden books, but I like Roth's approach and already the view from my kitchen window makes me feel good just to look at it.
- I'm a first time gardener and Susan's book has inspired me to use many of her ideas in my landscape. The book is very informative and the illustrations are great. I recommend the book to all who seek a colorful year in their garden.
- This book is not only filled with great information, it is also a pleasure to read. The Four Season Landscape changed my whole approach to gardening.
