1 comments about Taylor's Weekend Gardening Guide to Garden Paths: A New Way to Solve Practical Problems in the Garden (Taylor's Weekend Gardening Guides).

  1. The book is small but fruitful in picture and narrative. The title, "Garden Paths: A new way to solve practical problems in the garden", should read, "Garden Paths: A great tool for solving practical problems in the garden".

Regardless of title the fact remains that the author and publisher are addressing a key factor in bringing continuity to nearly every yardscape. As a landscape designer in Massachusetts, I find that many clients lose sight of the totality of their yardscape, sometimes getting too caught up only in its "curb appeal". This book and its subject help to broaden our approach to the yard and its different "spaces". It reveals the simple truths on how we as humans can best maximize, connect and enjoy each space's potential by thoughtfully creating paths for us to journey on.

Decent photos and a clean design make the book enjoyable to poke through and pull from. For a quick read on an important physical and spiritual element to gardens, this book will not dissapoint.

1 comments about Handbook of Soils for Landscape Architects.

  1. Added this one to my shelf! While I have basic soil textbooks such as the classic by Brady and Weil (The Nature & Properties of Soils), this book covers the basics very clearly and has excellent visuals! Further, it deals with the specifics of growing plants/trees especially in urban soils. The review questions at the end of each chapter not only help to focus attention on the main points, but are also an excellent guide for any professional-in-training who will be taking a certifiication exam such as the Certified Arborist Exam or Certified Horticulturist. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about the basics of growing plants in productive garden soils and in learning how to care for the soil-web-of-life!

2 comments about Time-saver Standards for Residential Development (Time-Saver Standards).

  1. I was a student of J. Panero at FIT in NYC in 1975. He and Martin Zelnick were wonderful professors. I was around when they were putting together their first book and was glad to see this one. Keep up the good work

  2. Have you ever been enthralled with those thick, illustrated books that line the shelves of every architect's office? This isn't one of them...its sitting open next to their cad station. I have few books that have followed me from college into practice, but this revised edition has assisted the design development of many residential projects and earned me high marks with my project managers.

1 comments about Garden Antiques: How to Source & Identify (Miller's Guides).

  1. Miller's Garden Antiques is an interesting read and also a good picture book for those interested in creating a "look" around horticulture or just around the poolside or patio. It may be difficult for one to actually garner the prices quoted for each piece in the book (especially if one doesn't live in a market that caters to these types of antique garden pieces). I'd like to say that there are better garden antique books available; yet, in reality, there is something to be derived from all of this type of book. Not a lot of hard information but an interesting picture book.

2 comments about Landscaping with Herbs.

  1. This is an idea book. A book that every time it's read another point of interest is noted. Mr. Adams really loves his herbs and wants to make a successful herb gardener out of each of us. More than that, though, he wants us to expand the way we think of herbs to include common culinary herbs in our landscape.

There are six major chapters that include; creating a Fragrant Garden, a Formal Garden for Beauty, a Beneficial Formal Garden, an Informal Landscape, a Contemporary Landscape, and a Wild Landscape.

Much appreciated is how each chapter introduces the reader to a myriad of herbs including specific named varieties of well known herbs. For instance, instead of just Thyme, many different Thymes are mentioned and discussed and often a photograph of that plant is included. Also, in each chapter are plans for using the herbs and several color photos of the herbs actually being used in the landscape. This realistic view of the plants is a big help when choosing plants for the landscape.

There are also useful, fun tidbits on many other aspects of using herbs including information on Topiary Training, Knot Gardens and Kitchen Gardens. There are recipes too, like Meatballs with Lovage, Oregano, Savory and Basil, that make use of the herbs we grow.

A handy chart at the back of the book lists each plant and many of its physical characteristics such as zone and bloom season. There is also a use chart which lists the landscape use and herbal use of each plant.

It is easy to see why this book was honored by the American Horticultural Society as a Great American Gardening Book.

  2. More and more people are realizing that herbs are special. In the garden they not only provide texture and fragrance, but they are also waterwise. This previously published book, now in paperback, provides the reader with information on more than 600 species and cultivars of herbs. John Adams explains how to use these herbs in a variety of garden types both formal and informal. Through this book I was introduced to new thyme species and prompted to plant a thyme garden.
