1 comments about Coffee Makers: 300 Years of Art and Design.

  1. I was disappointed. Arrived a large book with equally large space filling print. For me it lacked sufficient images and some of the discriptive details were simply incorrect and showed a lack of knowledge of the subject. To sum up its a coffee-table type of book only that lacks depth and study, but may appeal to the new collector or established collector.

5 comments about Fiesta: The Homer Laughlin China Company's Colorful Dinnerware (Schiffer Book for Collectors.).

  1. This book as some interesting info but not great. The book is 97% Fiestaware, most of that being the vintage pieces.

Being a collector of the post 86 Fiestaware, the book didn't do much for me.

  2. I don't care what Martha Stewart says. I love her show and all... but this book stinks and was the worst recommendation she has ever given!
There are just not really good books on fiesta ware out there. T

All this book was to me (i returned it as well) was a nice picture book with beautiful color representations. If I didn't care about the rip of price of [cost] I would have laminated it and given it to a baby as a picture book.

Outstanding photography and color accuracy just don't make up for the lack of valid information. I read the book cover to cover and I just missed the reference part of the book aside from a list of prices. It is full of errors and distorted information. When you do find something reference about the book it is mostly confusing or plain wrong.
    Things are mislabeled... etc.
This is more of a coffeetable book than a reference guide.

Overall [the price] is too much for picture book.

  3. I am not sure exactly how I feel about this book. On the one hand, it's got some excellent photos, beautifully lit, lush with color. On the other hand it is not in any way an exhaustive reference of Fiesta, as one would expect with a collectible as popular as this. I like the fact that photos are shown of the various backstamps (marks), but I'm not wild about the lack of organization and skimpy table of contents. I'd like to see more examples added, categories more organized, and prices more accurate (mind you, prices in reference books these days are hard to pin down, due to the affect of online auctions on collectibles). Long on nice visuals, short on information (and a bit too expensive for what one gets!)

  4. If I had gone by the first reviews I would have left this book alone and that would have been a mistake. If the text had errors in the past they are long one. The images are fantastic, the text is informative and very readable, the prices are right on target. Particularly good for those new to the field but of use to anyone. Maybe old reviews should be removed now and then. This is a great book!

  5. I love this book!! I think that the photos are great very useful information.

2 comments about Official Price Guide to Collector Plates, 6th Edition (6th ed).

  1. I found this book very helpful. It is comprehensive in its coverage. It is somewhat difficult to find plates and could be better organized. The pricing should be more current. Plates from 1990 to 2001 should at least have going rates listed, not New Issue. Most readers are trying to get an idea of the value of their collection. On P.7, the author says that RI means issued in the last five years. Many plates issued as long ago as 1992 have NI. I found most of the values listed NR and BR to be fairly accurate.

  2. Great, some illustrations, some tips for buying and selling, however, not updated for the internet. Some prices are off the wall but overall a good reference.

5 comments about Restaurant China : Identification & Value Guide for Restaurant, Airline, Ship & Railroad Dinnerware (Volume 2).

  1. In this second volume of her series for collectors, Barbara Conroy shares the details of hundreds of manufacturers that produced dinnerware for restaurant and transportation companies. The section on each manufacturer includes a detailed history, examples of the backstamps they used (along with date charts where applicable), copies of period advertisements, and *lots* of fantastic photographs showing the range of wares produced. This book is an invaluable reference, and a must-have for the serious commercial dinnerware collector!

  2. I have had this book for 3 months and still have not put it down. Great source to I.D. all kinds of china and the date codes. I can't wait for Volume 3!

  3. I have been using both of Mrs. Conroy's books extensively for the past 2 months in preparing for the biggest research project I have ever done with restaurant, railroad, steamship, and hotel china. Book 2 on the date codes has been a lifesaver. It was not until about 2 months ago that I really realized just how much time and effort she had put into it making these possible. Having a handy reference (especially for backstamp dating of pieces) is beyond valuable. It is a "masterpiece."

  4. A superb reference book for the serious collector / dealer. The appendix sections devoted to distributors, restaurants and hotel chains are special interest. Often collectors interests are in a narrow field - such a book helps to widen their appreciation of other collecting opportunities.

  5. Two Words - "Invaluable Resource!" Any collector of Restaurant China should not be without this identification and reference guide. Can't wait for Volume 3.

5 comments about Depression Era Kitchen Shakers.

  1. For the collector of kitchen shakers, especially shakers manufactured by Tipp City, Barbara has successfully captured a diversified collection of patterns and colors which have been wonderfully photographed so that you can see each shaker clearly and precisely. Yes Gene Florence has wonderful depression glass books but Barbara has the best pictures available at a reasonable price, especially to the beginner. A lot of designs have never even been found in a kitchen depression glassware book previously. The GUIDE is arranged to be used as a check off for collectors. Prices are much more realistic than in the latest book by Gene Florence. Nothing against Gene Florence, I have all of his books, but many of the pages are exact repeats of previous editions. Let's give Barbara a chance and a hand for taking on the job of presenting a colorful and informative book on kitchen shakers with realistic prices. I hope she will be motivated enough to come out with a second edition when additional shakers are found for inclusion. I have bought and sold hard-to-find kitchen shakers for over twenty years and I certainly wish this book had happened on the scene a long time ago when prices were $5.00 a shaker. Kitchen depression shakers are very much in demand and a lot of the new collectors need as much information and reference material as possible. Thank you Barbara for your time and effort in this book. This is one dealer that really appreciates it.

  2. Even though this book is limited to a particular group of Depression Era kitchen shakers (milk glass with lithographs and I am biased to these!!), it is an EXCELLENT reference guide for those of you who collect them! And if you do collect them, the check-off boxes are a handy item. GREAT SIZE for taking to those flea markets and auctions to see what you need to have! The prices listed are a good start to bargain with! BEAUTIFUL color photos of the shakers. It sits on my coffee table! Thanks, Barbara!

  3. GO BUY IT NOW! This book is an excellent and virtually complete book of shakers. The pictures are beautiful and the prices are great, too! I would highly recommend this book to shaker collectors as it is much better than any book Gene Florence has ever put out! All I can say is: Go buy it now!

  4. I recently purchased this marvelous comprehensive book and I cannot believe the superior quality! The pictures are unbelievably clear and I love the checkoff boxes to keep my collection organized. The prices are much more accurate than I have ever seen! Say good-bye to Florence and hello to Mauzy!

  5. Awful. Just awful. I know the book is inexpensive, but I literally would not have paid more than 25 cents for it if I had seen it before purchase. Very little information about few types of shakers. Spend a little more for the excellent Gene Florence book.

2 comments about Cc Salt & Pepper Sh Ipg (Confident Collector).

  1. I find many S&P sets in this book that I haven't been able to find in the "picture books". It may take a little longer to spot what you are looking for, but the shakers are arranged in sections that make research easier. If you are a word-nut, not a sight-reader, you will find this book a joy.

  2. I am rather disappointed. Of the fifty salt and pepper shakers, I have, I could only find seven. I also felt the values were a lot lower then I found in other books that I have. Even though there are a lot of salt and pepper shakers mentioned, I feel there could be more description and more photos.
