1 comments about Trial by Fire: A Woman Correspondent's Journey to the Frontline.
- "Trial by Fire" provides a close up, first hand glimpse into worlds in transition. From Belfast to Manila, Barnes braves some of the most dangerous locales on our planet at the time, not only as a reporter and observer but ultimately as a participant, impacted closely and deeply by the social and political upheaval of the time. Her first hand accounts of the events and individuals who shaped the fate of a struggling nation give a face and voice to what normally would just be another news story to most jaded first-world citizens.
Having known Kathleen personally for several years before I had the opportunity to read "Trial by Fire", my understanding and respect for her and her experiences was increased exponentially. When Kathleen speaks about world events and situations, she does so, not from the comfort and safety of a newsroom in the US; she's been there and lived these events!

1 comments about The Best from Out West.
- Author Woodbury has selected some of his best writing, taken from his quarterly tabloid, "Out West." Woodbury roams the blue highways and small towns of the Western USA, interviewing those he meets and writing about the places he visits. He has a tremendous sensibility about where to go (and perhaps more importantly, when to stay put), and a newsman's nose for a story. The stories that he digs up are not so much daily news, as people and places that are exemplative of small-town life, forgotten times, and the general oddities that make the world more interesting than yet another faceless mall (or Starbucks or McDonald's).
Woodbury delights in his subjects, and in many ways, is himself the most interesting subject of his writing. His reactions and feelings (especially his musings about being a wandering journalist) are a cross between reporting and diary-writing, creating a highly engrossing blend. Among the selection in this book are stories of Bill, Wyoming (population 1), eating a plate of cow brains, waging war on chipmunks over Cheezits, sampling potato ice cream and visiting museums and attractions such as Jake the Alligator Man and Death Valley. Amazon may be able to find you a copy of this out-of-print gem, or you can get a copy through Woodbury's web-site, www.outwestnewspaper.com.

5 comments about Big Snake: The Hunt for the World's Longest Python.
- Twigger is a great writer at publishing adventure novels in which he starts the quest but never seems to complete it. His books are about growing up and finding himself, but he rarely finds his subject (BIG SNAKE). A self-help book for the over educated who are looking at making their mark by desperately trying to find their niche in life ie: being a writer.
- I liked this book - more of a travelogue than a snake book, but entertaining and inspiring. Went and saw some reticulated pythons afterwards, and thought about the world's longest snake... If you liked this book, try the Snakebite Survivor's Club also - hilarious and scary.
- Well, as treatises on growing into manhood go, it's about average. What gets me is the title: why call it a hunt for a python? All the author hunted was other people to find a snake, and his own elusive maturity. I also cannot imagine going into such an endeavour so unprepared. It would have been more interesting, at least from a herp point of view, if a reticulated python hunted Twigger.
Buy this book only if you have a man in your family that refuses to grow up, and you want to show him into what he could deteriorate.
- This Is not a story about the hunt for the longest python but the hunt for someone else to find the longest python. The Author spends very little time looking for the snake . When one is found at the end of the book he is off getting married. It never even tells us if some zoo bought the big snake the other guys found. I wanted to hear about catching the snake NOT about a rave on the roof of a bank. if you want to read it wait for the paperback or for the library copy. As a highschool Biology teacher who loves to go herping this was a total bust for me. feel free to e-mail me if you have Questions. Sheldon

1 comments about Still in print: Journey of a writer, teacher, journalist (David C. Cook Foundation monographs).
- I read and enjoyed this book, though at times I felt I was having my hand held as I wandered blind through the world of writing. Seeing as this is a book for those interested in writing and learning how to write better, I would have chosen a style that is directed slightly higher than the lowest common denominator. I must admit at time I felt overwhelmed and appreciated the tone, but for the most part I found myself skimming over the "See Jane Dance, Dance Jane Dance" sections to get a broader look at the material. Overall, a good book.
