Stettner's "Witness to A Changing World: A Personal History" is a dispassionate yet highly personal account of his escape from Austria just days before Hitler sealed its borders, his arrival in America virtually penniless, and his rise first as a Harvard scholar and then as a member of a small, largely un-celebrated team of international economists who were critcal in shaping America's post-War economic policies and programs. In recounting his personal odyssey, Stettner traces the shaping of what were then highly contentious programs (including the Marshall Plan, Point Four and Foreign Assistance!) that were ultimately to make so important a contribution to the shape of the global economy and America's economic preeminence. Stettner we learn had a hand in the design and administration of many of these now classic economic efforts. Readers interested in learing from a hands-on participant just how America economic policy took shape in the post-War period will find much to mine in Stettner's modest but higly readable and very insightful volume.

1. This book kept me so interested that I kept on reading throughout the night! I have been reading several survivors' books lately and find this one by Faye Adam to be one of my favorites. I had read previously that the people of Holland hated the Nazis and their beliefs. Holland is one of the countries with the highest number of Gentiles hiding Jews during the war. The author's book seems to illustrate that. It would also lend itself greatly to Middle School study. The only reason I rated it 4 stars as opposed to 5 is the skimming over of large chunks of time (months, years). However, you never lose the sense of what is happening to the author and her family.



2. This book reads like a fast-paced novel. It is not only a look at one child's life during the German occupation of Holland, it is an inspiration to anyone who faces overwhelming odds. The author has written this work in such a way that it touches the hearts of readers from the age of 11 to 80. Middle school teachers would find this an excellent outside reading resource in both the Language Arts and History curriculums. The author is a living tribute to the good people who put their lives on the line to save hers.
