3 comments about Judaism Online: Confronting Spirituality on the Internet.

  1. This wonderful book is a must-read for any person thinking about conversion, or in fact, any Jewish person who wants to delve more deeply into their Jewish life and motives.

So many "born Jews" take their faith and what is asked of them by G-d so lightly. Mrs. Zakar is a role model for all of us. The learning, the doing, the quest that fills this book should be an inspiration to any Jewish person. It motivated me to think about what has been given to us by G-d and how He has asked us to connect to him. It is arrogant to say, "Well, here's how I feel comfortable connecting and thinking about G-d. As long as I'm good that's all that matters." Mrs. Zakar delves into why this kind of thinking isn't enough for the Jewish people. She points to the fact that the Torah has already set up the "how" of being "good people" and the specific ways in which G-d wants us to become closer to Him.

Dr. David Kaufmann helped her with the "why's." What a revelation this man is. To so selflessly assist this soon-to-be Jewish person in all her thinking processes. To so patiently answer her questions and always redirect her thoughts to give her the most confidence. What an act of Ahavat Yisroel (loving your fellow Jew) to be such a support to someone. A source of knowledge and comfort. Dr. Kaufmann certainly is a shining example of what a Lubavitcher can be.

The reading just flowed along, as if we were taken on a journey. With Mrs. Zakar at the lead and Dr. Kaufman driving the team we just knew the trip would all lead to a good place. This book is also an example of all the good and worth that can come from the Internet. After finishing the book I felt so privileged to have been "let in on" this wonderful, inspiring, and life-changing correspondence

  2. This was a truly amazing book as it describes a woman's struggle to find a true religion and faith. As she tells her story, her co-author interjects with diffirent insights and stories. It was a truly inspirational book of a difficult but satisfying journey of one soul bringing three others with it. A soul with wings.

  3. This book provides the reader with insight to the turmoil which exists in the mind of the person who is looking to change their life.

It provides the reader with basic fundamental insights to Judaism which were never addressed in a public way.

  1. I am in Junior High School and enjoy reading history accounts from the WW11 era. I have read many books, regarding this topic. My dad got me this book to read. Its the best book I have read about a couple dealing with the Nazi occupation. The account of the young couple, escaping occupied Europe at the begining of the War shows how strong, and brave they had to be to overcome so many obstacles that got in their way.
Its a wonderful story of love, and bravery.
    Jesse Slingluff 15 Chesterland, Ohio

  2. An intimate look at one family's history dealing with WWII, fleeing the Nazi's, making their way to the U.S. A world history lesson told in a very personal way. A quick, easy and very delightful read. If you or someone you know experienced something similar -- you and they will enjoy this book. Children with parents, grandparents or grandparents who fled Europe during WWII will gain a much better appreciation of their own family -- and the risks taken, hardships endured and sacrifices made so that they could have a better life.

  3. This book is a wonderful true story of two people whose love and persistence endured the separation and atrocities of World War II. It travels full-circle from their experiences and their final destination of freedom in Bermuda, to meeting in Bermuda 50 years later to tell the story to their children. I was unable to put this book down. The heart-wrenching story, documented with such clarity and passion by their daughter, is one of the most moving books I have ever read.

  1. I read this book with intensity, and believe me I don't read very much. I never understood the complexity or the intensity of WWII until I read this book.
I am a navy sailor and I have spent most of my time not realizing what that ment. I read this book after 9/11 and it helped me understand the sevarity of war and how tragic it is.
And even though it might be thought that I have a biased opinion towards my father's book, this is one that you will not put down!

  2. Some books of this type are tedious and rehash the same stories of an awful time in our recent history. I began this reading with reservations, but immediately found it not only an easy read but a page turner. Being written in the first person gives life and excitement to what could have been just another story. This book puts you there. You feel their anxiety. You experience their near hopelessness and rejoice in their triumph. This is a must read for anyone.

  3. David's story starts on the day the German army attacked Poland at the beginning of World War II. It chronicles one man's struggle to save his family from the Nazis and the heroic efforts he made to save hundreds of other people in the process. David never stopped believing in life and he never stopped believing in God. Through every twist and turn first, while hiding from the Nazis then in the Warsaw Ghetto and finally in Bergen Belsen his quick thinking kept his family safe.

You will not put this book down until David's final liberation. This book is a tribute to his zest for life. Through all the death and destruction David never lost his faith.

David Gilbert is a true hero. His story makes personal what now seems so far removed. It should be read by all those who want to learn from the inhumanity of the Nazi era. This book should be required high school reading. David's story is about life and one man's triumph over incredible odds.

2 comments about Eyes of the Blind.

  1. Dr. Hoogstraten's account of going into hiding as a young medical student in Nazi-occupied Holland is gripping. A firmer editorial hand might have focused the tale, which occasionally strays into a few too many family reminiscences that, although adding color, do not advance the story. The tale itself needs no such embellishment. However, having said that, those interested in daily life in occupied Holland and in life after liberation will find much here that is not normally recounted in texts on the subject. A thoughtful book from a erudite author.

  2. A fast paced, true to life thriller. A brilliant look at war through the "Eyes" of those who experienced it first hand. Hoogstraten tells a wonderful story, that is truely his to tell!
