5 comments about Complete Price Guide to Antique Jewelry.

  1. Although the book has good photos, many of the items are not represented correctly. Many items are listed in more than 1 place with different prices or descriptions. A bit more editing and homework would have been worthwhile for this book.
Prices are in many instances good, in others not realistic- either too high or too low. It seems that personal taste and preferences play a big role with the authors.
OK to look at the pictures, don't bother with the text.

  2. Photographs and descriptions done very well. Prices not based in reality. I am an appraiser of antique and period jewelry and wish I could pay these prices.

  3. The Price Guide to Antique Jewelry is a very well done book for the beginner, the expert and everyone in between.

The information is easy to understand, while the pricing information gives the reader a good feel for the real price levels you should expect to pay for antique jewelry, NOT "steals" at garage or estate sales.

Determining values of pieces can be very difficult for people not "in the business". This book does a great job at giving the reader solid, dependable information without listing prices that are "questionable" to either the buyer OR the seller!

As a collector, the book has helped me to feel much more confident when deciding what to purchase and how much I should be willing to pay. It's nice to see something current and thorough finally written about jewelry pricing.

Thanks for letting me add my "two cents".

A collector of over 100 pieces of antique jewelry.

  4. I was VERY disappointed with this book! Their prices do not reflect real life, too high on some things, too low on others. This is more than just a regional thing. A good portion of the book is used to plug their own business, offering "internet resell packages", that are so high priced they won't make you a dime, and huge "WANTED! " pages of items they are looking for. The majorty of the pics are B&W, and can be hard to use as a guide, particularly in the cameos, you can't see the faces at all! There is some good info in here, but it is buried in a ton of junk, and you are better off spending your money more effectively elsewhere. I wish I had!

  5. Will be of great interest to appraisers, bank trust officers, auction devotees, garage & estate sale enthusiasts, pawnbrokers, as well as collectors of all types of antique jewelry. Pricing is up-to-the-minute; all photographs are clear and detailed. This is a reference book that's actually a pleasure to use.... I recommend it without hesitation !

3 comments about Earrings: From Antiquity to the Present.

  1. As as jewelry designer, I am continuously researching the history of design. In building a library of references I have been very selective in my acquisitions for inspiration and research. This book is a wonderful history of design with exceptional photographs and bibliography. The section at the back with biographical annotations of designers of note is as precious, for me, as the photos and text of the book. I highly recommend this one!

  2. Beautiful book with very pretty pictures! I was very pleased when I received it and I highly recommend it to antique jewelry fans!

  3. This book was recommended to me by my antique jewelry dealer. It is a treasure-trove of historical information with fabulous pictures and descriptions. Whether you are a collector or simply an admirer, you will not be disappointed in this well-researched book.

2 comments about Royal Ruby (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. I just started collecting Royal Ruby glass, and this book has been a tremendous help to me. The pictures are wonderful, as well as the descriptions and information about various pieces. The occasional comparisons of similar pieces were very helpful to me in finding exactly what I was looking for. I am very glad that I bought this book, and I recommend it highly.

  2. Finally, a glass book where you don't have to guess what the picture is!!!! Each illustration has a caption, telling what the item is, along with the vital statistics. No more flipping from page to page to find out what it is, or worse yet, a picture full of glass and no list or caption. The illustrations are incredible. Not only has the author researched his subject thoroughly, the photography will dazzle you. Thank you Philip Hopper for one of the best depression glass books I've seen yet!!!! I sincerely hope you will write more of these high quality glassware books!!

  1. Plenty of typos and editing errors. Not a Rizzoli book, but trying to be one. Spend your money on a better book or an auction catalog.

1 comments about Gems and Jewels: A Connoisseur's Guide.

  1. When Gems & Jewels was first published twenty years ago it was the first book to approach breaking the gem trade's taboo against telling the consumer anything that would help him to develop connoisseurship in gems. I say approached because although an excellent gemological geography book Zucker approached but never really revealed the truth about quality grading. Whenever he came close and he often came frustratingly close, he would take refuge in statements such as "finer jewelry stores have traditionally provided guidence..."

As of 2004 the text is dated and color imaging technology has passed this book by. The photos are mushy and dull compared to newer texts.

Interested in developing connoisseurship? I recommend a new book entitled Secrets Of The Gem Trade, The Connoisseur's Guide To Precious Gemstones. The author, Richard Wise, delivers on the promise contained in the title, it truly is a connoisseur's guide filled with fabulously accurate color photographs of the exceptional examples of the 35 gemstone varieties covered in the book.
