1 comments about Jewelry of the Stars: Creations from Joseff of Hollywood.
- So little is written about this remarkable designer that it is great to have so much information in one source about Eugene Joseff. The photographs recording his designs are invaluable to costume jewelry aficionados and collectors. Joseff's contribution to film-making is unique and , until now, practically unsung. Movie stills, photos from the Joseff archives and photos produced for this volume provide a valuable record of his prodigious and truly remarkable output.
Why the publisher doesn't assign an editor to clean up much of the amatuerish, gawky prose is beyond this reader's comprehension. While one does not expect erudition in a "collector book", one should not have to endure irrelevant and uninformative captions, homespun drawings and corny typefaces. Many of the photos are poorly planned, using strange props and odd angles which interfere with seeing the jewelry. The poor editing and the poor layout prevent me from giving a higher rating. But if you are a costume jewelry collector, especially of Joseff, you have to have this book.

5 comments about Collecting Rhinestone & Colored Jewelry.
- This book has lots of great information and does a good job with mark's. I would like to see more color pictures. If you are selling a book on colored jewelry it makes sense to have pictures that show the colors! Otherwise is a good reference book.
- As a collector, I'm always trying to find books that catalogue maker's marks for jewelry and the thing I like most about this book is that it has an extensive section on marks that I haven't found in other books on the subject. Definitely a MUST for collectors that are trying to identify the markings on their latest finds!
- I'm a first time buyer of Maryanne Dolan's books, and she has a lot of information in this book. The trademarks are very helpful and also each piece has a lot of information about it. I feel her price ranges seem to be a little high and would love to know my jewelry is worth what she quotes. I really wanted a book with colored pictures, not black and white. There are only 16 pages of colored pictures in this book. The color of the jewelry really helps in identifing it for me. Hope to find a book with more color pictures to help me identify my jewelry.
she certainly has a lot of knowledge about rhinestone jewelry and hopefully I'll find a book of hers in color.
- I have found this book to invaluable in my research for preparing my information for publication.I am an avid collector and dealer of costume, vintage and antique jewelry and have used both previous and current editions of this book.I find this publication to be accurate - both in historical content and valuation - and use it extensively for my own research. It is a definative benchmark for identificaton and market information, especially when used in conjunction with the previous edition.I recommend this book to any serious collector and dealer.
- 400 pages of information of great value to rhinestone jewelry collectors. Features a complete history of the collectables and detailed data about the manufacturers, the process, care and keeping of rhinestones, sets and accessories. An interesting feature is the more than 700 manufacturer trademarks pictured, along with the dates they were first used. The jewelry with estimated values is shown in sharp black and white photos, with a few in color. An interesting brief history of each major manufacturer is included. This is the 4th edition of the popular volume. Highly recommended.

1 comments about Contemporary Japanese Jewelry.
- This book is a catalogue of jewelry featured in an exhibition that toured the United Kingdom accompanying the "Japan 2001" festival. The pictures of personal ornamentation in this book will test how you define `jewelry.' Simplicity is thematic, giving the viewer an impression of movement in the swoops and curves shaping each piece. For example, ear ornaments do not hang from the earlobe but, instead, are shaped to the ear's interior, like a hearing aide, with a hole made for sounds to enter.
Teruo Akatsu makes beads from dust, threading them onto stainless steel wire. I surely have a surplus of this raw material at my home. (You might recall that our San Antonio artist Sherry Fotopoulos has used dryer lint to create sculptures.) Tomomi Arata uses sand, enamel, silver, and gemstones to create rings that looks like they've been lost in an ancient shipwreck. Hiromasa Hashimoto strings liquid silver bugle beads on silicone cord to make a geometric necklace. Yuta Hataya fashions bracelets checkered by brass and silver. Mikiko Minewaki is the ultimate recycler, making rings from the ends of cigarette lighters and colored plastics. The above examples show just a few unusual materials used by these inventive artists, but you must see the book to know how the materials are rendered into spectacular jewelry ornaments.

2 comments about Cartier: Creative Writing.
- This book depicts Cartier production of pens and writing paraphernalia from the 1860's to the present day. Its best feature is the high-quality photography and reproductions of exquisite photographs from the Cartier archive. It treats the products as luxury rather than practical goods. The focus is not on how well the pens write, but on what they were made of, how beautiful they are, and what celebrity bought them. The text, whether from the author's style or the translator's, rambles on with pasted together anecdotes--like an early draft of a term paper. There is not one critical word about anything Cartier in the whole book. This is a very well done coffee table book for those who love beautiful writing implements. Buy it used. It won't hold value but is a pleasure to look at.
- I first thought this book was just another brand-name book which displays its own achievements . But then I realize that this book is an excellent and comprehensive account of the history of writing tools, be they from the East or the West. What has carried me away is the history of items like pen holder, paper knife, inkwell, etc...it makes me realize that every object in the world has its own invaluable meaning and deserves its own dignity . In short, the book is an indispensable eye-opener.
