1 comments about Popular Jewelry of the 60S, 70S, & 80s (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. Not only was I attracted to this book because I grew up in the 60's, but because I also sell vintage costume jewelry on my web site, Atlanta Vintage Jewelry.

Roseann Ettinger's book contains a lot of pictures that were nostalgic to me. It features deco jewelry, punk, novelty and bi-centennial pieces, plus mod and Avon jewelry popular when I was in school, and a whole lot more, including themes like 'Back to Nature'.

This book is not only great for vintage jewelry collectors or people who deal in jewelry, like myself, but also as a great reminder of when we were teens. I love it.

4 comments about Jet Jewellery and Ornaments (Shire Library).

  1. I returned this book so I might not be a good person to review it.

It was VERY expensive for a very short almost pamphlet on how Whitby England made it's Jet!

I wished to learn about Victorian Jewelry, not about the factory....

    I don't recommend this.

  2. I sell Victorian jewellery, have collected books on the subject for years. This is one of the best. Helen Muller not only shares her wealth of knowledge, of history and of the process of making jet jewellery, but she also makes it clear that this antique jewellery is truly an art form. Her illustrations, factual and meaningful information and life-long collectiohn make this a must-have book for any dealer or collector

  3. I sell jet, as well as Amber, and highly recomend this book to all my customers. Helen Muller covers mostly antique Jet, of course, but also covers the imitations that were popular at the height of Jet fashion.

In one small book you learn a *lot* about genuine Jet, and you also learn the one thing I have had to explain more times than I care to recall: Just beause it is antique doesn't mean it is genuine Jet! Jet was imitated as soon as it became popular, and many of the antiques (and valuable in their own right as antiques) are not genuine Jet. This book explains what many of the imitations were, and how to determine if it is Jet, or imitation.

Absolutely gorgeous pictures of carved Jet, and imitation Jet jewelry, with a lot of interesting facts about the Whitby England Jet carving center.

A must have addition to the library of antique jewelry colectors, flea market merchants, and re-enactors. This book is *required reading* for anyone looking to purchase genuine Jet for ritual purposes as well.

  4. Helen Muller provides a welcome service to collectors of antique jet jewelry. Her short but very concise survey includes a history of English Whitby jet (the kind that most Victorian mourning jewelry is made of), and its manufacture. She also offers hints about distinguishing authentic jet from its lookalikes. The book contains many black and white photos of representative types of jet jewelry and collectibles. A must for the collector of jet and mourning jewelry.

1 comments about English Regional Chair.

  1. This superb reference volume examines the English regional chair (particularly windsor and ladderback types) as a vernacular tradition of craft and design. It is more comprehensive than any other book ever written on antique furniture. A work of the very highest calibre by a most respected, insightful and dedicated scholar. Study in this field, often inspired by this extraordinary work, is still continued with great enthusiasm. It simply cannot be bettered!

3 comments about A World of Earrings: Africa, Asia, America (Ghysels Collection).

  1. I approach this book purely as an artist seeking inspiration for my own jewelry designs, and for this I give A World of Earrings five stars. The photography is beautifully clear and sharp, offering precise detail under excellent lighting. The jewelry pieces are shown quite large, allowing you to see all the details. It is true that the descriptions are placed in the back of the book, and it might be a little inconvenient for some to flip back and forth between photos and descriptions, but I actually applaud this design decision because I prefer to see the jewelry itself without distracting blocks of text. As an artist, not a jewelry historian, I have to say this book fulfills all of my expectations and is well worth the price.

  2. The book is beautifully illustrated with full color photos that are exceptional in quality. I think it would have been helpful to show how some of the earrings are actually worn, either on a mannequin head or a real person. One other feature I found inconvenient was the location of the descriptive text , which is clear at the back of the book, instead of under or in back of each illustration. The reader has to keep flipping back and forth between the full-sized photo in front and the text at the end. However, it still provides a good general survey of ethnic earrings from Africa, Asia and the Americas.

  3. ...as with the other volumes published thus far about the Ghysels collection (World of Rings, Splendor of Ethnic Jewelry), one is left thirsting for an accompanying volume of scholarship. Broad introductions to the regions represented and short captions relegated to the end of the book are what we're given instead, often without dates for the pieces shown. A gorgeous and inspiring visual resource- still one of my favorites on ethnic jewelry, for the sheer beauty of the pieces included- but a bit frustrating to the jewelry historian.
