2 comments about The American Japanese.
- The story of Akira Toki was familiar to me--I have known people who were incarcerated in the Japanese internment camps in Arizona. They too had left the camps to farm in the Midwest--and faced similar hardships. Toki's upbeat attitude, heroism and success in the face of hardship is a great tale and a great testament to his fortitude. If you liked "Farewell to Manzanar", you will enjoy reading "The American Japanese."
- Arthur Rathburn's short oral history of Akira Toki is an excellent study of America's treatment of AJA (a term used during World War Two for "Americans of Japanese Ancestory.")
This is a story rich in tales of racial tolerance, racial intolerance, and American Patriotism. One gets a fresh and interesting view of life in America for American born and raised persons of Japanese Ancestory. It is not just a tale of regret or of bitterness. but a good over view of many of the complicated aspects of the subject. When one reads the book there is a definate desire to want to meet this true American, Akira Toki.

1 comments about Savage Days, Savage Nights.
- Soka Gakkai's youth division has compiled in Japanese fifty-six volumes of accounts of Japanese wartime suffering. The English version includes selections from the first twenty-eight of these to create a single gripping book.
This is not an attempt to plead a national cause; the editors clearly realize that the horror of war knows no nationality. They have been able to persuade the contributors to this volume of one fundamental truth, which is the core of the Buddhism in which they believe: that suffering is born from ignorance. In the hope of dispelling the ignorance of the young about what war really is, these victims have consented to relive their tragic experiences and commit them to paper. Their hope is that this knowledge, once shared, will help to prevent a repeat of the most senseless and savage of all human activities.

1 comments about Ichiro Suzuki: Best in the West.
-
This book was very good and I learned a lot about baseball history. I read the book fast because I could not put it down it was so interesting. It was a baseball autobiography book that teaches so much about the wonderful world of baseball. This was a great style of writing. There were some surprises in the story. One was when Ichiro Suzuki joined the MLB. There were no cliffhangers through out the book. This was not a boring book at all. If you like baseball you would love this book. I would read more of this authors books so I could learn about other sports. I would recommend this book to others because they would learn about the exciting world of baseball history

2 comments about I Came Back from Bataan.
- Sgt. Gautier was given some unusual assignments while a prisoner of the Japanese, and he was fortunate to have survived the Death March, prison camp and the voyage to Japan. He gives a gripping account of his experiences, and also provides us insight into the lives of the PoWs after their returned to the States.
This is a good book. Anyone interested in learning what it was like to be a prisoner of war under the Japanese will find it intriguing.
- This book was one that out of all of the books about the Death March of Bataan, was the most vived. This man came to my school and old us how real that this war that most people just talk about, was so real! This man went through so much and survived it and then went through it again, just to tell people about it. I think that it was a very honorable thing to do.
