2 comments about Great American Bridges and Dams (Great American places series).

  1. This is a wonderful book for bridge and dam lovers. It manages to cover quite a bit, but could use an update, longer discussion of each project, and MORE BRIDGES! But then, you can't have too many interesting bridges in my experience.

The book covers bridges and dams coast-to-coast as they were in 1989, as well as some which were already gone as of that date. Recommended.

  2. I have to say this book was a great disappointment I was expecting lots of information and some great pictures.

What this book is can be classified more as a dictionary or an encyclopedia. it's a small book (5x10). The pictures are small and in black and white. And there's maybe a paragraph on each structure. Not much information at all - probably best used as a table reference.

This is book is from 1988 - back before the internet was a big thing. So not only are structures from the last 20 years not in here, you could probably use Google to find more information on any of the structures in here.

It was a good book in it's time, but really not worth your purchase today.

2 comments about Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin and Taliesin West.

  1. This book explored the origin, the life of Frank Lloyd Wright. The author didn't discuss FLW's other works as such but did explain the nature why Taliesin & its other counterpart were built, & unbeknown to the architect would one day become 2 of the most important buildings in the States. The book contained many pictures (good quality) of the communes participating in many subsistence activities, FKW giving guidance to his disciples, lavish parties & performances that were held there, many aspects of those buildings. On the sideline, the book also displayed the graphics that were utilised by the Taliesin Foundation, Asian art works that were collected by FKW during his trip to Japan (in particular). For the benefit of the readers, building plans were enclosed to relate to the pictures provided.

  2. The endlessly creative mind of FLW took two wildly different locales and managed to create important landmarks of twentieth-century architecture in both -- Spring Green, WI, and Scottsdale, AZ. Following a historical glimpse into Wright's origins, this beautiful volume traces the multiple purposes of Taliesin and Taliesin West. The book closes with a unique look at Wright's collect of Asian art, an important influence on his life and work. A definite treat for Wright fans, the book helps show why these two vastly different architectural gems stand as "his autobiography in wood and stone."

2 comments about The Houses of St. Augustine, 1565-1821 (A Florida Sand Dollar Book).

  1. This book is written for the average person to understand, it makes sense and yet has enough detail to reconstruct a house from history.

This book is so highly regarded it is the basis of St. Augustine City codes regarding Historic Architecture preservation and restoration and will continue the tradition of Colonial St. Augustine. Not just for the novice, also for the historian, architect or builder.

  2. St. Augustine is a fascinating architectural anamoly in the United States. I have become consumed with discovering all there is to know about the unique architecture, people and culture of this quaint city. Only last weekend, we spent 5 days, walking and touring much of the historic district, with this book in hand, I might add. If European and American history and architecture are a passion of yours, St. Augustine is the closest, most unique place to find it all. This book is a great place to begin.

1 comments about Veneklasen Brick: A Family, a Company, and a Unique Nineteenth-Century Dutch Architectural Movement in Michigan.

  1. As a non-Dutch person who grew up in Michigan and now a world famous comedian living in Los Angeles, I think very little about architecture. In fact, I think very little about anything that doesn't involve me. But on a friend's recommendation, I picked up a copy of Veneklasen Brick. And what can I say? I loved it!

Mr. Douma clearly knows his way around Michigan. Anyone who grew up there will love the references to Lake Macatawa or the humble beginnings of Holland (the city in Michigan, silly!) History buffs will cheer at the in depth analysis of the tumultuous lives of these settlers. And comedians, such as myself, will love the long funny Dutch words.

A+ Mr. Douma. Sequel anytime soon? Cuz I know a guy...

2 comments about California Crazy and Beyond: Roadside Vernacular Architecture.

  1. I bought this book when it first came out in 1980 and I recently noticed that a new addition was available. Well worth getting too, more pages, extra subjects (cars for instance) updated bibliography and a sparkling new layout. Author Heimann feels that architectural historian David Gebhard's term 'Programatic' does not quite capture the flavor of these buildings, I propose calling them FUNTECTURE.

A new chapter, not in the original book, is 'Current Condition' which has twenty-two photos, in color, of buildings now standing and they all look very smart and well cared for but wait till you see the photo on page 169, this shows the amazing headquarters of the Longaberger company in Newark, Ohio, famous for making baskets and that is exactly what the building looks like, seven stories high with two carrying handles reaching up to the sky...only in America! You can see and read about this lovely bit of whimsy on their website.

You will really enjoy this book if you are a fan of roadside America, especially if you have lived in California and maybe remember some of the weird buildings that are no longer around.

***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.

  2. This book is a must-have for those of us who love the lure of the road and all it has to offer. It's sad that a lot of these wonderful icons of Americana are vanishing, but it's great that people like Jim Heimann are preserving it for future generations to see. I highly recommend this book -- lots of great photos and interesting history in a nicely organized book!
