2 comments about Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin and Taliesin West.
- This book explored the origin, the life of Frank Lloyd Wright. The author didn't discuss FLW's other works as such but did explain the nature why Taliesin & its other counterpart were built, & unbeknown to the architect would one day become 2 of the most important buildings in the States. The book contained many pictures (good quality) of the communes participating in many subsistence activities, FKW giving guidance to his disciples, lavish parties & performances that were held there, many aspects of those buildings. On the sideline, the book also displayed the graphics that were utilised by the Taliesin Foundation, Asian art works that were collected by FKW during his trip to Japan (in particular). For the benefit of the readers, building plans were enclosed to relate to the pictures provided.
- The endlessly creative mind of FLW took two wildly different locales and managed to create important landmarks of twentieth-century architecture in both -- Spring Green, WI, and Scottsdale, AZ. Following a historical glimpse into Wright's origins, this beautiful volume traces the multiple purposes of Taliesin and Taliesin West. The book closes with a unique look at Wright's collect of Asian art, an important influence on his life and work. A definite treat for Wright fans, the book helps show why these two vastly different architectural gems stand as "his autobiography in wood and stone."

3 comments about The Royal Palaces of Tudor England: Architecture and Court Life, 1460-1547 (Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in Britis).
- This book is very extensive on the history of the Tudor palaces, it has great information and great pictures. A must buy for your collection of Tudor history.
- I grew up in England and have visited many historical buildings from the Tudor period. If you are fascinated by the Tudor dynasty, especially Henry VIII, and the buildings and living conditions of the Tudor monarchs, this book will satisfy your thirst for knowledge. I thought that I had a fairly good knowledge about the Tudor period until I bought this book. Simon Thurley is an expert in this field and it shows. The book contains maps of the palaces, pictures of parts of excavated palaces that I have never seen before, and many, many paintings of the palaces how they "used to look". Many of these fine buildings have been lost to modernization and demolishment, but their images live on in this book. Excellent job Dr. Thurley!!
- Dr. Thurley has done a great job with this reference book. A great addition to anyone's personal reference library on Tudor history.

1 comments about California Missions.
- America is a place that offers a kaleidoscope of landscapes. Florida shines in orchards of palm and citrus trees. Kentucky and Tennessee flow with oceans so green and lush the hills seem like waves splashing upon the earth. Maine is waft with pine and maples that set the sky ablaze in fall. Chaco Canyon, New Mexico pulls you back to the past and sprinkles the imagination with the magnificent art and architecture of the first Americans. In all of this we are reminded of the splendor of our country. And after years of experiencing our nation, state-by-state, we are convinced that California is the most beautiful of all. Rich in art and spirit; always pushing toward acceptance and tolerance for all people. Yet, we rarely take the time to reminisce about those who first settled this state, setting a foundation and shaping the hopes, dreams and struggles of generations to come.
In the book California Missions, we are reminded of the influence of these earliest settlers on the architecture, language, music, art, apparel, children's games and other reflections of California's early Spanish culture. Starting with the very first mission, "San Diego al Alcala" settled in 1769, Barbara Shangle takes the reader through each of the 21 missions' unique history, in all their adventures, hardships and dramas.
Even with an abundance of information, this book is not so cumbersome that it becomes overwhelming. In fact, Shangle does a magnificent job of delivering just enough knowledge to keep the reader interested and engaged. Beautifully vivid photographs accompany the history and description of each Mission. For anyone not able to tour the Missions in person, photographers James Blank and Robert Shangle have done an amazing job capturing the spirit and uniqueness of each.
The Missions are such an important part of our heritage that elementary students have for years been encouraged to learn about them. Not only does this book cover the information needed to write an A+ report, the photography in the book will make it a family treasure for years to come. Beautiful enough for the coffee table, yet it's an affordable 8 x10" paperback volume.

1 comments about 21st Century House.
- Jonathan Bell's book, 21st Century House offers up a focus on the home as a symbol of change and innovation, packing in hundreds of color photos of house interiors to prove his point. These photos don't limit themselves to the U.S. either, but cover homes around the world, with architectural writer Jonathan Bell choosing homes which reflect the latest design trends whether urban or rural. Affordable houses are the focus, too: a refreshing perspective in a sea of architecture books featuring mansions.

3 comments about Bali Style.
- This book is very usefull to all people who live in countries with sunny all year around climate, with a temperature never below 22·Celcius.Of course wind is out of question!!:
Is a very pleasent way of decorating in a different way your summer house,in a summer place..
- Excellent photos of the best houses, building materials, gardens, fabric, crafts, and architectural details in Bali. Very beautiful as a coffee table book, quite useful as a style reference book.
The text is very nicely written, without repetition or fluff; it serves mainly to illuminate the huge variety of photographs. In other words, the reader will learn a little about Balinese geography, sensibility and culture from Walker, but not in intricate detail or with scholarly authority. I read it cover to cover in a couple of days, and felt it was a decent grounding in Bali style. Author, editor and photographer should be praised for finding examples of all kinds of Bali style: garish, sublime, fancy, plain, funky, sophisticated, folksy, casual, formal, sacred. A solid overview, useful to decorators, architects, mere Bali fans.
- I never read this book, so I'm very happy to discover all the informations about architecture of the Pacific area, and I'd like to be more lucky and get that book in my shelves.
When I read the editorial reviews and the hardcover, I already fall in love (déja amoureux). my mind is risen when I get the opportunity to meet very nice things, when I read very nice descriptions, and mainly when I watch very nice pictures about very nicest, cutest houses. I really look forward to get an exemplary of this book to enhance the richness of my mind! may day, may day, may day! Help me to get it!

1 comments about Ageless Adobe.
- If you are interested in preservation, vernacular architecture, architectural history, or just in understanding the beautiful and functional adobe buildings of northern New Mexico, this book is an absolute must-read. I've lived in Santa Fe my whole life, and have always loved adobe buildings, but I still learned a lot from it. What it's not: a superficial collection of pretty pictures to show you how to make your faux-dobe house look all "Santa Fe Style".
Also, if you are thinking of stuccoing your adobe house, put down the trowel and read this first. Please?
