The Nasher rocks..I love this place, from Piano's iconic building to Walker and partners perfect landscaping..oh and the art is ok too..LOL..as for this book it is very good..it is highly informative, easy to read, and the images pop off the page. I recommend it to anyone interested in landscape architecture on a grand scale, where money was no object. And if your in Dallas, if you do nothing else..visit the Nasher, it is in a word: Fabulous

1. If, like me, you're fascinated with grand hotels of the past, and especially with those that have managed to survive, you will enjoy Wentworth by the Sea, The Life and Times of a Grand Hotel. Dennis Robinson's book is much more than the history of a hotel; it is the story of New Castle, New Hampshire, from its settlement in the 1600's to modern time. The building, development, and ultimate salvation of the Wentworth has had much to do with this unique island village and its dynamic, fascinating people. The book is artistically done, with more than 250 pictures and drawings from all eras. Well written, it is filled with facts, legend, and lore told in an engaging manner that has its reader beginning at the front cover and following straight through to the end as if reading a novel. A terrific addition to New Hampshire's seacoast history!

   This is a beautiful book with a fair amount of historical information; however, I know the history was not as thorough as it could have been. I also didn't like that it had more drawings than actual photographs. Still, the photos they did have were gorgeous as were some of the drawings. I would still recommend it to people with interests in this field.

1. I have alway's thought the San Francisco City Hall was spectacular, as impressive inside as out. It is great to have a book on the architect of that building and many more, his buildings in the Federal Triangle are wonderful, classic, yet functional. This book has fantastic images and the text is fascinating. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in spectacular architecture in the classical style.

1. Kudos to Amazon for selling this book as I have been unable to find it anywhere else. The author is obviously an expert in his subject and consequently this is a fascinating read and a worthy addition to the number of books on this subject. I look forward to a follow-up.

1 comments about The Making of Miami Beach 1933-1942: The Architecture of Lawrence Murray Dixon.

1. The amount of material available about the architects of South Beach has been very limited. Though two in particular, Henry Hohauser and L. Murray Dixon, designed approximately 70% of all of the buildings within the Miami Beach Art Deco District we know very little about them.
   
   This book clears the air a bit about Dixon but we are still much in the dark about the details of his life. In fairness we do get some pieces of the puzzle such as how he spent time in New York with Schultze & Weaver and how he trained in the various architectural studios (similar to the ateliers of Paris) in the big city.
   
   Issued in conjunction with an exhibition in 2000 at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach this book chronicles the architectural works of L. Murray Dixon. It casts a wide net in order to place Dixon's work within the fabric of architectural, urban, and cultural histories. The text by Lejeune and Shulman does a wonderful job of connecting the simultaneous threads of Miami Beach urban growth, the popular culture that drove much of the architecture on Miami Beach, and the influence of the major world architectural theories on the Miami Beach architects. Beautifully illustrated with a plethora of photos, original Dixon plans, and a number of his architectural renderings we get a much clearer picture of Dixon's work and the development of Miami Beach. The photos of the lost Atlantis Hotel are worth the price alone.
   
   Now if someone could only do this for Henry Hohauser.

1. Although this coffee table book has photos, it is the short stories about the abandoned gas stations that make the book worthwhile.
