2 comments about Buckingham Palace: The Official Illustrated History.

  1. I found the book to be very informative, good selection of pictures. It was interesting to compare the different rooms as they were changed from Queen Victoria through Queen Elizabeth. It lacks pictures and descriptions of the rooms in the new wing of the palace, the one facing the Victoria Monument. I do recommend this book, though, I wish it had more pictures of other rooms.

  2. A nice book on one of the most recognizable if not prettiest palace in the world. The text is highly informative and the images are well presented. Buckingham Palace's exterior style is not exactly aweinspiring, it looks like a government building, like the treasury or department of state, it's really the interiors that make this place special. It's a high Georgian tour de force, the interiors are quite simply spectacular; they are elegant and have elan. If you have any interest in the Windsor's or love Georgian style then i highly recommend this book, if you have never seen the interior of this building, you will be pleasantly surprised.

1 comments about New American Interiors (New American).

  1. This book continues in the series of modern American residential design being done by the Whitney Library of Design. As the name implies, this volume concentrates on interior design. It discusses and illustrated some 20 interior design projects by some of Americas leading firms.

The photography is absolutely top notch, as was the selection of the homes and apartments to be photographed. The description to go along with the photography describes what the designer had in mind when selecting the furniture, art, and colors of the room.

The projects in this book cover a wide range of interior designs from the ultra modern to traditional. It makes it clear that the art of interior design is not dead, although you will certainly have to have a strong bank account to afford some of these rooms. Excellent.

2 comments about Building the Empire State.

  1. This is actually three stories in one. First, the discovery of a personal notebook documenting the construction of the ESB by an involved, but unknown author. Meticuously typed, with photographs, the manuscript was obviously a labor of love. Second, the written manuscript provides details of the construction which are engrossing, and the notebook's photos show the processes of constuction - not what was done but how they did it. Finally, the first 40+ pages provide a great summary of the ESB's history for the uninitiated. One of the most intriguing aspects of this book are the full-page photocopies of the notebook's actual pages, which only add to the historical sense and mystique of the manuscript. A great gift for the "construction-type" in your life, which is how I got mine...after numerous hints.

  2. Based on actual records the construction company kept during the building process, this book gives an insight of how such an astonishing effort was completed. The whole process of buying the spot, finding an architect(!), tearing down the existing building, design, and building the Empire State took only 22 months. It's an outstanding example of how the management of a very complex project can be done and a must read for everyone in the software industry ;-). Fun to browse through yourself, a sure hit as a gift to anyone interested or working in architecture, construction or project management.

2 comments about Vienna: Art and Architecture.

  1. I spent a week in Vienna this summer. Being that I did the whole backpacking thing- bringing back books was not an option. Last week I was in an art museum and came across this incredible book.

What initially attracted me to Vienna- was not its art, nor its architecture, it was its place in the history of music, and what a place that was. However, Vienna, along with Berlin and Prague, opened my eyes to the timeless beauty of both art and architecture of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Vienna is a true gem of this world, and this book illustrates that perfectly. This is truly a wonderful find.

Vienna: Art and Architecture is packed to the hilt with beautiful photos. As well, it is packed to the hilt with informational text, which is equally important. This book is informative and educational, but in written text and photos.

The book focuses on the beautiful buildings that fill the streets of Vienna, as well as the public places, and the art housed within these buildings and on Vienna's streets. It covers from the Renaissance to the present.

This book really takes you on a trip through Vienna's history, going beyond art and architecture. It's an amazing history from the height of Hapsburg power through its demise and beyond.

Furthermore, there are tons of photographs within this book that the public otherwise doesn't get to see, such as the great collection in the gallery of the Belvedere Palace- which wasn't open to the public when I was there - to the wonderful art attached to the walls of Schonbrunn Palace. Much of which is not open to the public.

If you're looking for historical books on Vienna, you can find better. However, if you are looking for pictorial books on Vienna- you aren't likely to find much on this level. It is beautifully done.

A well mix of beauty and information.

    FIVE STARS!

  2. Vienna Art and Architecture ed. by Rolf Toman is a beautiful coffee table book but it is much more than that thanks to the excellent articles accompanying the illustrations. All the articles haved been translated from the German. The seven chapters deal, in some detail, with art and architecture from antiquity to the present.

The photographs throughout are beautiful. There are the ususal pictures to be found in all art books on Vienna but there are also quite a few instances of photographs of lesser known buidings and/or palais not open to the public. Many books exist on baroque art of Vienna and there are countless books on fin de siecle art and architecture but this is the first all inclusive book beginning with Roman artifacts and continuing to Sculptures of 1996. It is ideal for the novice but even the expert will find some new material. The only caveat is the sheer weight but the number and quality of the photographs makes it all worth the while.

4 comments about Liang and Lin: Partners in Exploring China's Architectural Past.

  1. Wilma Fairbank catched my nurves of impression this time, when I found out there is a book described Liang and Lin's acheivement in English, the only one,an expensive one,but it worthes it.I decided to continually followed Lin's way,to do some research of classical Chinese architecture.I'd never said no to those difficulties since the obstancles always mislead my mind. There is one thing I hopefully didn't lost,a resoluted heart, nothing can move it.I don't care make more money or not,at least I mostly convinced myself to be a person have a pursuit of dreams. You could call me a freak, and I am still on the way to success.Lin and liang are the partners worked together to reach a goal.Unfortunatelly,I am an indepandent loner also emerged in the amazement of exploring a lost world. Thanks for Wilma's book,I could come trough the tunnel of history again.

  2. Lin & Liang are forrunners of contemporary Chinese architecture. Like most idealistic intellectuals of the period, they went out to learn from the west and returned back home to contribute what they had learned.

This is an important trend in modern Chinese history. The long list of intellectuals includes Sun Yat Sen, Liang Qi Chao(the father of Liang)Chao Yuan Ren, Zhou En Lai, Tang Xiao Ping,.... It was a traumatic period for modern China. It was a time of possibilities, opportunities and frustrations.

One could not imagine the archievement and contributions of modern China to the world without these intellectuals.

The stories as told by Madame Wilma Fairbank is descriptive, touching and informative at the same time. Mrs. Fairbank(wife of John Fairbank) is a poet and historian at the same time. The book (text and images)is western journalism at its best.

The most difficult period for Lin & Liang is not Sino-Japanese War period. Although physically, Lin suffered from fleeing around and illness, but their spirit were high and friends were always around.

The most difficult period was after the liberation. Lin & Liang were destined to work with Chairman Mao, the founder of PRC. Based on their fruitful research and intellectual mind, they come up with the conclusion and dedicated their lives to the preservation of Chinese artefacts, and in most cases, Chinese architectural heritage.

As detailed descripted and well put by Madame Fairbank in the book, Lin & Liang travelled all over China and had produced hundreds and thousands of research papers with surveyed plans and photos. Wilma should have known, she joined and lived with them more than once. The Liangs' ideal and proposals to preserve holistically the ancient city of Beijing must had been in conflict with Chairman Mao's ideas. As the founder of PRC, Mao of course, would have his own plans. He believes, to me wrongly, that "Man would defeat Nature". He would like to see factories and other new buildings rising on the horizons of Beijing, Nanjing and everywhere in China.

This should be a matter of opinion. But as we all know, for a long period of time in contemporary China, a different opinion with Mao would be interpreted as a revisionist liner against the Communist Party! That's why Liang suffered so much and Lin died too young to suffer with him.

This is an important historic lesson that we, as a human being should all learn and study. Through the process of modernization, how should we deal with our heritage and nature? Liang proposed to preserve Old Beijing holistically. Beijing, as observed by Liang rightly, is the most complete form of an ancient city in the world! He is not an old man keeping only the 'Olive Tree'. Lin and Liang are genuine Chinese Architects. They proposed to preserve the old city walls and towers so that they could become civi open spaces and landscapes. People can enjoy history and live in history walking through.

Liang's second wife, Madame Lin Zhu said recently,"In the civic society, Liang is respected by many." Well put Madame Lin. (Lin Zhu's piece is included in the book also very moving.)

The problem is, it takes a few thousand years to build a civi society and a civiization, only takes a few second to destroy them. Should we not give deep thoughts to it.

  3. Anyone who want to know more about Liang Si-chen and Lin Hui-yin and their firends should read this book.

To be honest, I feel what make this book so interesting is the life story of Lin and Liang and their friendship with friends, especially the Fairbanks. The Architecture contents are good too, but the life stories of Lin and Liang, two most important pioneers in Ancent Chinese Architecture studies, make the book very charming and worth of reading.

You will know more about the history of 20th century China, before, during and after WWII. You will see how communists grab power in this used-to-be-great country and gradually turn these respectible scholars' life upside down. How they were changed from eager supporter of Chairman Mao's so called 'New China' into losing the minimal hope to live on. This is a great book, written by John F Fairbank's wife, to memorize their true friendship with Liang and Lin.

This is not just another book about architecture. This is a book written with life.

  4. when two people decide to join hands and make something happen, that kind of unity becomes so powerful. i think that's what makes Liang and Lin memorable. and Mrs. Fairbank's close relationship with them made their life story vivid to the readers. a great book and great people in it.

1 comments about Kensington Palace: The Official Illustrated History.

  1. An extremely nice paperback history book about Kensington Palace. You get the history of the place from it's beginnings (there's been something built on the site for about a 1000 years) but mostly covering the period from the 17th century onwards through today.
There are a lot of photographs of various sections of the building complex, some more than 100 years old, both inside and out as well as maps and diagrams from past centuries.
The history of the place is very detailed with period illustrations and covers many of the occupants as well as the structure itself.
I really like the book and would recommend it to anyone who has been or is thinking of going to London. You will learn a lot about the Palace but be warned, this isn't a guide book. You will learn about a lot of what is there but you aren't told just what isn't open to the public (if you are it isn't very clear and I missed it)and there is no Prince(or Princess)lived here detail (Charles & Diana barely mentioned in comparison to some past inhabitants).

5 comments about French America: French Architecture Form Colonialization To The Birth Of A Nation.

  1. This book was exactly what i needed to work with on an interior design project. It was easy to read and not so detailed that would make it dull.

  2. "French America" is a dazzling, oversized coffee table book which opens an entirely new world all around the reader. I had expected a treasure of great pictures and was not disappointed. What I had not expected is the narration, not only descriptions of the pictures, but of the history of the French role in the development of the United States.

This book is a tour through many buildings associated with French settlement and development in the United States. Beginning with the early Huguenot settlements in New York and South Carolina, the reader is taken on to the heart of French America along the Great Lakes and down the Mississippi. Despite living among the greatest collection of French Colonial architecture in the country, I learned of near by structures of which I was totally unaware. The journey continues down the river to Louisiana with its living French culture amid the houses and buildings surviving from a way of life that is Gone With The Wind. The tour winds through sites in the Eastern states associated with French participation in the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars and concludes with Civic buildings in the Washington-Virginia area inspired by French architecture.

This book broadened my understanding of the French heritage around us and sharpened my appetite to visit some of these areas. It can do the same for you.

  3. As a loving and dutiful son of both cultures, having been reared in France under the Nazi terror and having commanded American Infantry during the Korean War, I feel qualified to greet this treasure of a book with enthusiastic acclaim for being such a moving and exquisite celebration of the Entente Cordiale that holds these two great republics in a bond that no amount of maligning can destroy. The evocative text together with the extensive collection of superb photographs are the guides for a cultural, architectural and historical visit to the enriching French heritage that graces all the regions of the United States. No effort has been spared in designing and in producing this large and most elegant volume which is in itself a work of art.

  4. French America is one of those rare coffee table books that is both beautiful to look at and features a well-written and highly interesting text. The photos display incredible luminosity and skill. Both interior and exterior shots are infused with light that reaches out and grabs the viewer. The book itself is a true find - a vast historical and architectural frescoe of the French sites and buildings in America, spanning from New England, the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley to the Gulf of Mexico.

I was fascinated to learn the history of French architecture from constructions along the Mississippi Valley, like Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, built by Normans using the same bousillage and colombage techniques found in local French villages. The more sophisticated architecture of the Creole plantations in Louisiana and the urban and civic buildings of Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C., created from the plan by Pierre-Charles L'Enfant remid us of the once prevading French influence in this country. Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate, was inspired by the Hôtel de Salm in Paris and his admiration of French architecture. The Maison Carrée in Nîmes was the prototype of another of Jefferson's architectural projects, the Capitol in Richmond, Virginia, designed along with the French architect Clérisseau.

The special features on history and French culture in the US are a delight, including the Huguenots and their descendants. George Washington himself had Protestant ancestors from the l'Ile de Ré off the Brittany coast. Other sections deal with the Creole influences and the cultural importance of the Cajuns in Louisiana. As the book points out, before the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, when Napoleon sold the territory for 15 million dollars,(the greatest real estate deal ever) the settlers of French origin made important contributions in the realms of architecture, education and trade. The Jesuits educated and converted Indian tribes, the coureurs de bois established fur trading posts, talented artisans constructed houses and monuments largely inspired by French architecture from France, Canada and the French West Indies while blending them in such as way as to create a unique new style : American architecture. A great discovery !

  5. Very nice photographs with informative text. A great gift for any American of French ancestry or someone with an appreciation of the French contribution to our culture.
