2 comments about Modern House Three.

  1. Raul A. Barreneche continues the survey of contemporary dwellings with this fascinating examination of what is on the cutting edge of architects' designs for homes. The book covers homes designed and built around the world with special emphasis on the particular environment in which each home is designed.

Here are examples of famous architects such as Richard Meier and Tadao Ando side by side with lesser known but equally inspiring new visionaries. Some thirty odd houses in fifteen countries are shown both by photograph and by drawing, documenting the newest thoughts in the use of materials and techniques of craftsmanship.

Divided into three sections the homes displayed are approached by examining the integration of architecture with landscape, the innovative materials now available for the architects to incorporate into these dwellings - manners in which environmentalism is addressed, and, of the most interest, the way architects and designers incorporate the life styles of their clients into the choice of design elements used in the new home.

This is an interesting book for those who are contemplating having a artistically unique home enter the design phase, but for those who simply like to continue the ongoing 'dream house voyage'. Grady Harp, April 06

  2. Interesting choices, but inadequate, often unreadable plans make any serious understanding of the prjects impossible.

1 comments about Lofts of Scandinavia.

  1. Big, hardcover book about different lofts in Scandinavia. Photos are good and it has even floor plans for some lofts in the last chapter. Lofts they presents in this book are big and in loft-spirit some of them are made spaces which we're first place designated for something else. Recommended!

3 comments about Ming Furniture in the Light of Chinese Architecture.

  1. This is a beautiful & scholarly book written by an eminent art historian. The organization by furniture type (i.e. chairs, tables, beds, cabinets)makes it easy to use as a reference book. The text is beautifully written and highly informative, filled with quotations & poems about Chinese culture and history. This is not a text that focuses only on cabinet-making. It explains the relationship between Chinese architecture & furniture. The photographs are not only beautiful, they also illustrate & expand upon the text in that they include current photos of furniture as well as historical paintings & illustrations showing the context for the objects. The book has an index, bibliography, and endnotes. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Chinese art & architecture.

  2. Being a fan of Sarah Handler, its easy to feel the furniture flow through the Ming Architecture.
Just having retured from China and Tibet, this book was in the back of my mind as I stood and gazed up at the columns and beams mortised and tenoned together to form the typical Chinese structural backbone. Sarah has made the connection between the structural engineering of Ming/Qing building skills and the master carpenters' use of the Lu Bang Jin manual that describes appropriate and propitious use of shapes, materials, orientation and all things lucky in architecture. Buy this book and you will be happy, have prosperity and long life!

  3. chinese furniture have a strong relationship with architecture, in its proportion, construction, and relationship to the space. I was looking forward to see a more detailed analysis of such relationship but this book turned out to be a mediocre repetition of numerous chinese furniture books already in the market. Many of the pictures are from dealer's photos or Museum's existing photos. The reference paintings are primary from Chin P'ing Mei or similar paintings which have been published numerous times by other authors. The sketch or drawings are mediocre. There are no measured or proportional anaylsis of the furniture to the architecture. I have returned this book.

5 comments about The French Farmhouse: Its History, Construction, and Regional Styles.

  1. I met this book in a collection in a rented house near Cour Cheverny. I have a French Farmhouse about five kilometers from there and am going to do some restoration when I live there. This book is very helpful in showing details of construction in both French and english terms. I also enjoyed identifing the style details in the buildings around the Touraine. The book is very well organized and represents a great amount of work and research. Amazon found me a like new copy at less that new price. A great service.

  2. I started my search for a copy of this book nearly 3 years ago, and so far no luck. I can't believe the publisher abandoned it so soon after its initial publication. I've tried contacting the publisher via email, phone, regular mail but they won't respond. I've begged and pleaded with them to reprint it, but so far unsuccessful. An acquantance owns an English copy that I made a copy of. After showing it to many architectural coworkers, I made multiple copies from my copy for them; yes, I've even asked for permission to make copies, but still no response. The publisher has no idea how they're missing out! And how the rest of the architectural world is suffering without access to this wonderful book. Can't wait to find a copy. (...)

  3. Excellent book on French vernacular farmhouses. It compares well with several dissertations that I have read on the subject. I too am looking for a copy of this book. French language version will be acceptable as well. The publisher stopped printing this one too quickly. If anyone can help, please let me know. E-mail is mitchelll@nku.edu

  4. I am also looking this fine book. Even if it's the French version. So if Greg in Los Angeles does know where it can be found it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bruce McIlveen bandj@vermontel.net

  5. I paged through a copy of this book (not for sale) a few months ago and found it to be an outstanding review and analysis of one type of "old world architecture." I was shocked to discover that the book was already out-of-print! Far too many books are written on the more modern forms of architecture; and so few books about older forms of architecture. If you're in the business of architecturally correct restorations or reproductions, this book is it! As an architectural historian, I found this book described nearly every detail of French farmhouse construction and the variations by region. Many details I had never even noticed or considered. I only wish the publisher would print up a few more copies. If I could only find a copy, I'd be in heaven. I'll even accept a used copy. If anyone knows of an available copy (used or new) please contact me at my e-mail address cabateman1@home.com. Thanks
