1 comments about Houses of Boston's Back Bay.

  1. Bunting's book is definitive, scholarly yet readable. He defines various architectural features, as well as outlining technological and cost elements, of representative 'mansions/townhouses' built in post civil war Boston. It is fascinating. I found it best read through once for the total picture then used as a selective reference (for example: the intersection of the changes in heating technology on design). Photos are provided to illustrate points made.

3 comments about Modernismo: Architecture and Design in Spain.

  1. For those (like me) who thought that Gaudi was the penultimate Spanish architect (I placed Calatrava a close second), this book is an eye-opener. The work here is amazing and hopefully will lead to more being written about these somewhat unsung heroes, especially Lluis Doménech i Montaner.

  2. unbelievably beautiful! the impact of the Art Nouveau movement known in spain as Modernismo, had great bearing on the look of barcelona as a modernizing city in the early 20th century. the book is also a sharp tour guide of some of the great architectural works of a city that is brimming with incredible examples of the decorative arts. if youve been/youre going to barcelona or love nouveau/deco design-this is a must have!

  3. I've always been interested in Gaudi, but was not aware of the variety and breadth of work done by other Catalonian architects around the same time. I don't know why this work is not better known, but should be studied by all who are interested in the arts--sculptors, painters, designers, musicians, and of course architects.

While it is hard not to just look at the pictures, the text is interesting (although at times dense). But I found that if I didn't get too mired down most of the essays were worthwhile, especially the one that related to art and painting. As a former art history student I was surprised by how impressed I was with many of the paintings in the book--from artists I hadn't heard of.

All in all this is a very high quality book and would be a great gift for anyone you know with an interest in art, architecture, modernism, or Spanish culture. Highly recommended.

1 comments about Boca Rococo: How Addison Mizner Invented Florida's Gold Coast.

  1. I found myself always wanting more of this book. The author has done a great job presenting the life of Addison Mizner. The starting point is interesting. Caroline Seebohm discovered a cache of records from the architect's office. What she failed to mention and may not know is that these records were split sometime after the death of Addison so there is another book to be written!

3 comments about Philadelphia Theaters: A Pictorial Architectural History.

  1. The book is good in so far as it goes, but I would've liked more coverage (and pics) of more of Philadelphias downtown theaters. Only a handful are covered (many more are left out) There is an incredibly long list of theaters listed in the back of the book. What happened? I didnt expect a layout of EVERY theater, but certainly the Goldman, Regency, Randolph and a few others should've been covered.

  2. This book is outstanding. I grew up in Phila. and was lucky enough to be around when these Theaters were active.I went to shows in most all of them that are in the book. This book brought back so many fond memories of days gone by.The book is very well written and right on the ball fact wise.It was a wonderful time when those Theaters were around and this book captures so much of that feeling. If you have an interest in Theaters, and especially if you were around back then, you will love this book. If you were not around back then you would still enjoy this book for its historic value. Thank you Irvin R. Glazer.

  3. OH the beauty of those grand old theatres! These Philadelphia beauties are wonderfully documented in this exquisite Dover Publication. I congradulate the Dover publishing house for making another wonderful set of black and white images available to us all Its great to see all the architectural interior details of these theatres.

2 comments about Clayton's Galveston: The Architecture of Nicholas J. Clayton and His Contemporaries (Sara and John Lindsey Series in the Arts and Humanities, No. 7).

  1. I grew up going to Galveston and have always loved this strange city. This book does a wonderful job of capturing the architecture that made Galveston unique. Clayton is definitly the definitave Galveston architect, he shaped the style of the city. Galveston was so lucky to have had him as their preeminant architect. I loved the historic pictures in the book and the text was facinating, I learned a great deal about a subject I thought I knew much about. I urge anyone who visits Houston to make it their mission to go take in Galveston and take this wonderful book with you.

  2. Few people have shaped the face of Galveston and Houston as much as architect Nicholas Clayon. This book compiles the architect's works in Galveston during the boom of the Gilded Isle. This invaluable resource is filled with photographs and renderings of Clayton's projects, both commercial and residential. While many of his buildings remain, many more have been lost and this book helps recreate Galveston during Clayton's time. It also includes information on other architcts who were Clayton's contemporaries. A must for anyone interested in Galveston, architecture and how one was shaped by the other through Clayton's vision.
