  1. I've had this book for sometime now and have refered to it often. I had purchased a pattern for blankets but found the one made from the book instructions fit better than trying to alter the blanket pattern. Cool ideas for saddle pads and custom brow bands--would be useful if putting together team gear or as a Pony Club project.

  2. I own three horses and when you start buying stuff for three horses you find out rather quickly how expensive it can be. With this book you will learn how easy it is to make your own horse blankets, polo wraps, and other usefull equipment. This book has helpful charts, included patterns as well as easy to follow step by step instructions. Even the beginner can save money and have fun making their own horse clothing.

1 comments about Straight from the Heart II: More True Stories of Remarkable Encounters with Once-in-a-Lifetime Horses.

  1. This anthology contains good to very-well-written stories about horses and the people who love them. Most of this material appeared on the pages of EQUUS Magazine. The quality of writing in these tales improves after the first few until the horse and rider adventures become real page turners. Some are humorous or touching, others are imaginative or inspiring and some are tragic. The owners are men and women, teens and little children but they all respect and love their mounts. Some of these horses make millions of dollars for their owners while others teach their riders life's lessons. This is an excellent book for any horse owner. Suitable for children mature enough to understand horsemanship. I'm buying copies as presents for the children in my family.

  1. I found this book a great help in improving my riding skills . And ride my spooky horse and know what to do when she did spook . I know this would be a great book for any level of riding . I think Judy writes her words so that its hard to put the book down.

5 comments about Living With Horsepower!: Personally Empowering Life Lessons Learned from the Horse.

  1. This book made me laugh out loud, then I cried to read how even "hardened" professionals cried with the loss of their equine partners. I thought I couldn't ride any more until I started with program for handicapped riders.
I read about the young woman with MS who is totally independent ONLY when riding the trails alone. Her story alone is worth the price of the book, and perhaps a book of her own. I think about her courage, and realize how blessed I am.
This book may change the way you think about horses and yourself. I would recommend it strongly to those parents who question the value of horses, an expensive luxury, true, in their child's life. The luxury will be seen as an essential for learning life lessons.

  2. This is the best book I have read in years It has so many good stories I cant rave enough about it. The only thing missing is an artical about my favorite horse of all times FURY I think the movie industry did him an injustice by his treatment after he was no longer usefull. Had it not been for Toni Ringo Helfer of The Gentle Jungle he wouldnt have been rescued and brought back to health I thank her with all my heart

  3. While I was reading this book there were many times that I read and re-read certain lines and even whole chapters just because the words made such perfect sense. I really enjoyed getting the views and experiences of so many top riders from all aspects of the equestrian world with the author putting it all into perspective. The last chapter about losing your friend and riding companion was so well written that even though I was reading it through tears I could feel the compassion and complete understanding of the author. This book goes on the top shelf of my library and I know I will be going back to it again!

  4. Yeah, I thought I did. Being a copetetive showjumper can give you a "big head", but after reading LIVING WITH HORSEPOWER, I saw the horse in a new light. Witter's interviews with top horseman that everyone admires taught me that horses do have feelings, they love you, and they can put you in your place quickly. Reguardless of the size of the animal, and there more commonly spoken about "stupidity", I have come to realize through this book that horses can reason. I swear I can disagree with any scientist that horses CAN do these things. LIVING WITH HORSEPOWER, has truly taught me to think like a horse, and has made me become a better horsewoman. I would like to now thank Rebekah Ferran Witter for this new "life".

  5. Ms. Witter seems to have captured all that is truly equine, and then some. Being a "Saddlebred" person, I was thrilled with Ms. Witter's interviews with Tom Moore and Mrs. Crabtree who today are the icons of the Saddlebred world.

I could relate to every chapter in this book from horse communication, to detective work, to the chapter on loss. This book is a MUST have for anyone who rides or has horses in their lives! A fantastic read...A fine job!

5 comments about The Parent's Guide to Horseback Riding: New Edition.

  1. I would recommend this to a young new horse enthusiast. My daughter loved reading it before getting her first horse.

  2. I am a riding instructor, involved in the local Pony Club, and this is a great book. It is easy to read and it explains to non-horsey parents the important role they will have in their kids riding/horse loving career.

  3. If you are feeling a little insecure about your lack of knowledge of horses and riding--especially safety issues--but you really care about the safety of your kids around horses and their learning experience, this is the book for you. There is no other resource like it and it will help you discern good practices from bad.

  4. Parents should read this book BEFORE they buy the horse. Dr. Jahiel can help you decide whether or not you (and your child) are ready for the joys and responsibilities of horse ownership. Her good humored and sometimes humerous advice will help families make the best decisions for caring for and enjoying their new horses.

  5. This is one of the most useful books I have seen in a long time. It answers virtually all the questions that the non-horsey parent might have about riding. It covers choosing a stable and an instructor, when--and if!--to buy a horse for your child, things the parent should know how to do, what to expect of lessons, what horse shows are about, etc. etc.

I would recommend that everyone who teaches young pupils keep a supply of 'The Parent's Guide to Horseback Riding' in her stable, and hand them out to the parents of every new pupil. Even if you give them away, they will be worth every penny of the investment in time saved and misunderstandings avoided.

2 comments about Western Training: Theory & Practice (A Western Horseman Book).

  1. If you are going to buy one book on training this is it. Written in laymans terms yet comprehensive enough for a pro, Jack does an outstanding job getting his method across. One of the most respected horsemen of his era...influenced by many capable horsemen like Ray Hunt and Monte Foreman... no gimmicks and nothing to sell. He has managed to put a lifetime of experience about training horses in a very reasonably priced book. No BS here, just common sense and good technique.

  2. Jack Brainard gives great advice when buying a western prospect, and training the horse. His many years of experience are certainly shown in this book!
