1 comments about Horsewords: The Equine Dictionary: The Ultimate Reference Book (Revised 2nd Edition).

  1. Being an English girl living in the US, this book has terms from both sides of the Atlantic so the fact I can work out what the heck the cowboys here are on about is wonderful as so much terminology is different. A really well constructed book which my husband also finds useful as he is relatively new to horses.

3 comments about Horse Stories.

  1. I recieved this book as a christmas present and after reading the book cover I could not wait to start reading it because it sounded like Gayle Bunney loved horses almost as much as I do. Well after about the third page I realized I was sadly mistaken because instead of reading a book that sounded like it was supposed to inspire me it just depressed me.This book is not a story about a womans love of horses it is about a womans love of money.Any person that loves horses would not send them to the slaughterhouse because she deemed them to be so called useless or in other words basically not making her money. She mentions just a few pages into the book how much she loves money but funny enough did not mention once how much she loves horses well of course besides the false advertising she used on the book cover all this book was was just another way for her to exploit horses for money consistent of what she has done her whole life.

  2. I bought this book because I have an extreme interest in horses. This book would not let me put it down once I had started it. The stories were humorous-sad each completely wonderful in their own way. She wrote from the heart and this probably was why you could get lost in the stories.I loved how she told it like it is!! I learnt from her experiences and am inspired to treat my horses with the love respect and kindness that she tells of in her stories. I loved the book and hope that there are more of it's kind out there for me to read.

  3. This book contains amazing stories about horses. The author crys and laughs with you. Stories about tragedys, horse abuse, foals, training, and best friends. A great book for any horse lover. There is one in appropriate word, but other than that, a wonderful book!

3 comments about Concise Guide to Nutrition in the Horse (Concise Guides Series) (Concise Guides Series).

  1. This is one of several books in the "Concise Guide" series by Dr. Ramey. I'd definitely recommend all of the books to any horse owner. Not only are they well written and incredible informative, but they cover topics that any horse owner should be aware of (tendons, colic, medications, etcetera). This particular book covers the basics of nutrition for your horse. It does not get too technical like many nutrition books do, which then either scares the reader away, or bores them senseless. What is DOES cover is quite important: feed ingredients, when to feed, what to feed, supplements, knowing your horse's condition, feeding for maintenance, growth, reproduction, performance, and for disease.

  2. Out of desperation for my 30 year old first pony, I bought this book hoping it could help me put some weight on him. It helped enormously in that it made me realise that fat isn't necessarily best when it comes to old horses, and it helped me to feed according to Billy's needs, not what I thought he should have! This book also helped me in forming a more nutritional feeding plan for my other horse, Astral, (Billy's girlfriend!) as she too is approaching her twilight years now and her diet needs to take this into account. All in all this was an easy read and dispelled for me many fears I have had over the years of what to feed my two, and cut out some of the nonsense that you inevitably pick up along the way. If you really love your horse(s) and want the best for him/her then I would strongly recommend this book to first time owners and those more experienced alike. It really is never too late to learn. Enjoy!

  3. This book offers a very clear easy to understand summary of horse nutrition. As a horse owner in Bermuda we are very limited to what feed, supplements, hay etc. are available. It helps to have an outline of what your horse requires & this book is very helpful. I would say that every horse owner should read or own one of these books. I own several of the other books in this series which are also very informative. There are a lot of misconceptions that go along with what you should feed your horse & this book will help you understand some of the myths.

5 comments about Such Is the Real Nature of Horses (Evergreen).

  1. Stunning photos, endless information into the true behaviors of horses. If you want to learn about how horses truly behave, think and act, this is the book you need to read.

  2. No one else photographs the horse like Robert Vavra and this book provides you with a double dose of wow factor - beautiful photographs and excellent text and photographic stories.

There are several books out there claiming to tell you about horse social structures and body language but this is the classic (I've had my copy for at least 15 years now) and the best. Vavra writes and photographs with a naturalists eye for detail and information while allowing the photographers art and ability to display beauty to shine through in the finished plates.

The book follows the lives of several bands of horses on the Carmargue providing an enthralling insight into the lives of feral horses, which easily translates to our domestic companions.

The book is formatted so that various behaviours and traits such as aggression, play, vocalisation etc etc are put into chapters with photos and explainations showing the variations of each behaviour between adolescents, babies and adults or mares, bachelors and stallions for instance.

A brilliant coffee table book, an excellent guide for horsemen and women interested in equine behaviour and body language.

  3. I'm quite sure that Vavra was a horse in another lifetime. His photos are to horses what Herb Ritts' were to Janet Jackson and the countless people Ritts immortalized on film.

Robert, if I weren't married, I'd run away with you just so I could be there when you see what you see through your lens. For horse lovers, nature lovers or photography lovers, nobody captures the power and majesty of these creatures like Vavra.
Give this book to someone you love and wrap it in the finest paper and tie it with a velvet bow. It would be a treasure to receive this or any Vavra book.

  4. "Such is the Real Nature of Horses" was a surprise 12th birthday present from my uncle - the first "grown up" horse book I ever owned. I treasure it still. It has survived 23 years of love and appreciation. Not only are the quality of Vavra's images awe-inspiring, capturing the grace and majesty of the horse; but the book is well titled. It has taught me many valuable things about equine behaviour. Watching any group of horses interacting freely, I see so much more than if I hadn't owned this book. Get it... you have to.

3 comments about Horses (Tiny Folios Mini).

  1. I am not sure the last two reviewers fully comprehended what the purpose of this book is.

It is not a history text book. The purpose of this little book is to bring you vivid portraits of the most wonderful animal on earth, not to teach you about French cave paintings or Fallabellas.

The pictures are lovely. Highly reccomended to those who appreciate the horse's natural beauty and grace. The photos are amazing. This book makes a wonderful gift to a horse enthusiast!

  2. Aside from offering the reader many beautiful photographs, this book is largely useless. It is designed as a gift-type novelty item, but the abundance of blatant factual errors in the text and photo captions makes me cringe, and I would never want to perpetuate them by giving this book to anyone. The author, for all that he claims to be a horse owner, seems to know very little about horses.

    Some of my favorites:

"The Arabian is the oldest of all horse breeds" (pg. 32): Well, no, it isn't. The Arabian is certainly a well-established breed that has existed for a long time, but it is not the "oldest" in any sense of the word.

"The Camargue is said to resemble the horses found drawn on the cave walls of Lascaux" (pg. 44/45): Has the author ever SEEN the cave paintings at Lascaux? I would hardly say they look like Camargues. The conformation and coloring of the horses in the paintings much more closely resembles something like the Mongolian Wild (a.k.a. Przewalski's) Horse. And THOSE look nothing like Camargues.

"Though the name refers to a color and not strictly a breed, the palomino has nonetheless attained virtual breed status in the U.S." (pg. 55): No, not even close. There is a registry for palomino-colored horses, yes, but they'll register anything from a Shetland to a Quarter Horse to a completely mixed grade-horse. There is no palomino breed.

"On the North American continent, it is generally believed that the horse played a major role in enabling Native Americans to become mobile and cover great distances for trade or aggression. Yet, years later, it was the horse that was employed by the cavalry to conquer the Indian forces" (pg. 80): He's got it completely backward here. Horses vanished from North America in prehistoric times, and it was not until Europeans arrived on the continent that horses were reintroduced. So there is no way the Native Americans could have had horses BEFORE the Europeans arrived.

"The polo pony is not truly a breed, but an Argentinian strain that comes close to attaining breed status" (pg. 108): The author seems love inventing "breeds." The term "polo pony" simply refers to ANY horse used in the game of polo. There is no breed or near-breed. Indeed, many polo ponies are small Thoroughbreds.

"Challenging a pony to a foot race is good fun, too, but one should be a good sport and allow the horse to win from time to time" (pg. 131): It would have to be one HECK of a small, slow pony if it needed to be "allowed" to win. A healthy horse or pony can very easily outrun any human.

  3. This book is accessed from the mini horse section.

    It shows no mini horses.

Other than the mini size of the book (not the price) it has no connection with mini horses.

For that reason it is a big joke.

If you like full size horses, fine.

If you like mini horses, pass.

2 comments about The Percheron Horse in America.

  1. this book does a good job of telling the history of the percheron since their arrival in the United States. Very informative of the history of the club and the club's pupose. I wanted to learn more about the breed and I did.

  2. I chanced upon this book while browsing for a title to donate to our small-town local library in memoriam for a deceased friend who was very active in old time farming displays with draft horses. (A practice we substitute for funeral flowers) Having grown up on the edge of the Percheron epoch in this country, I bought this book for myself. Upon reading it, I found a comprehensive history of the Percheron Horse that takes up where the previous history of the Percheron Horse leaves off. It's all here, the detailed story of the rise and fall of the glistening blacks, grays and dappled draft horses of yesterday. We find that the old gray mare certainly ain't what she used to be and how that all came about. We travel in time from the massive production of the American Percheron breeding movement in this country to the near extinction of the Association and the movement of their offices from the Chicago Stockyards to a small rural farm in Indiana, where the incubus of the Association survived. Then, the influx of interest in draft horses grew and the breed proliferated to the levels of today. The names which ring famous throughout the history of the breed, not only of the horses, but of the men and women who made the breed here in America are featured along with graphic illustrtions. This book is not only packed with the history of the Percheron horse in America, but is full of pictures from the beginning to the end pages which feature detailed timelines and chronological tables defining the rise, fall, and resurgence of the breed. If you are interested in horses, read this book. It will deepen your understanding of the majesty and dedication of breeding and change forever your ideas of the "old gray mare".
