5 comments about Traits of a Winner: The Formula for Developing Thoroughbred Racehorses.

  1. I would highly advise anyone who enjoys thoroughbred racing to purchase this book.It takes you behind the scenes and lets you know what really goes into preparing a horse to race.Great stories by Nafzger about the Derby Trail etc...and also the development process of the horses. I think I'll read the book again..Nice to incorporate a book like this into all the handicapping books I have read...A must read !!

  2. The Zen of Horse training and how it is a microcosm of life .
This is a book that can raise everyone's awareness of Life . . .

  3. Great book, written by a legend. Gd anecdotes for the non horsey hands on type. ted b.

  4. Carl's treatise on Thoroughbred training deserves another look now that he has won the Kentucky Derby again (2007) with Street Sense.
Carl and Wanda are a class act, he isn't desparately entering horses in the Kentucky Derby so his owners can have cocktail party conversation like so many of the his contemporaries seem to be doing now.
Carl lets the horse bring them to the Derby, if he's worthy.

  5. Carl and Wanda Nafzger set goals and attained them in the highest manner in a horse business that often takes advantage of newcomers. The writer also gives a very clear picture of how horses attain the rarified status of "Stakes Horses" or continue on to the best of their abilities as "claimers" or in other endeavors. We bought and gave as holiday gifts five copies of this valuable story.

2 comments about Horseman's Veterinary Encyclopedia, Revised and Updated.

  1. I own/operate a small breeding/showing operation that usually has 20-25 horse at one time. I have always had an intrest in veterinary medicine and have tried to educate myself to a level of competency to which I can treat most of the issues that arise. I found this book to be the best of the six vet reference books that I own. Whenever I have an issue, this is where I turn first. It is extremely well organized and the amount of information and detail is tremendous. It has helped me with difficult diagnosis and treatment. I would highly recommend this book to every horse owner.

  2. I am a horse owner, have been for years, and I thought that this would be a great reference book. However, it seems that whenever I need to do research on something specific, the information is either not in the book, contrary to what my vet has said, or just isn't helpful. Look up "cribbing"- a passing mention of "cording of the neck muscles that results when he forces air into his stomach." Period. No possible causation, no mention of diet, suggestions to alleviate, the latest research, nothing. Look up "Deworming"- you get photos of the nasty critters that may inhabit your horses digestive system, and some suggestions about how to handle them. I was looking for information on the latest info on ivermectin resistance, rotation schedules, etc., and that wasn't there. I also couldn't find a chart of the entire skeletal system. There are drawings and photos of all sorts of conditions and pieces/parts of anatomy that may be helpful at some point, but so far, this book is rather disappointing.

2 comments about Healing Your Horse: Alternative Therapies.

  1. This was a great book. I did not know much about alternitive therapies, so I took a class on it at college. Healing Your Horse: Alternitive Therapies, was used as our text book. The book covered therapies such as: massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, homeopathy, and herbal. Each section is easily explain by specialists in that therapy. This book is easy to understand on any level. It is great to read for your pleasure, or a do-it-yourself guide. What ever your interest is, this book is worth reading. It's all you need! So get started! Enjoy!!

  2. I was introduced to this book through a massage therapy class at my college. Not only does it provide a basic overview of techniques from massage to accupuncture, it also describes how it will be beneficial to the animal. All levels of readers and practitioners will be able to read and comprehend what the book is saying. It isn't one of those technical publications that will blow your mind. I could'nt put it down

2 comments about Starting to Drive (Threshold Picture Guide).

  1. I bought this book to teach me the basics. It only covers the harnessing parts, great book for that alone but nothing at all about starting the horse or pony to drive. There is so much more to know and this book just doesn't cover it..

  2. The book is all of 24 pages long. Contains lots of good pictures and diagrams of harness tack, but very little instruction on dealing with the horses reaction to it! Since the title is "Starting to Drive", I assumed there would be more information concerning getting the horse aquainted with the tack. This would be a good book to familarize yourself with the various harness components, however I wouldn't use it as a direction to harnessing a horse, especially a green one!

2 comments about Guide to Driving Horses (Horse Lovers' Library).

  1. This little book is a great reference for learning the correct names and uses for the equipment. There are chapters dedicated to the problems you will encounter in training a horse to drive and the obsticles you will encounter. Driving a single, double, and tandum are all covered as well as the equipment and problems of each. What you should consider if planning on showing and purchasing your own vehicle are gone over with detail. This is a BEGINNING guide and you really will need an experienced horseman to work with you. Don't set your expectations that you can go it alone safely with a backyard horse of minimal training and you will be fine.

  2. This book does have an interesting chapter regarding the history of driving, which I enjoyed. However, I was hoping to use this book to help me learn the basics of training my horse to drive, and was disappointed. Unfortunately for me, the author is English, and therefore uses many terms regarding both the horse and the harness which I am unfamiliar with.

5 comments about From the Horse's Mouth.

  1. Anyone who reads this book and is not motivated to change the Walking Horse training methods has no soul. The horrors that Walking Horses are put through in the name of beauty are absolutely and without a doubt the most cruel and unhumane practices on the face of the earth. If people would just appreciate the horses' natural ability and gait it would be a much more enjoyable association.

  2. Every horse lover should read this book. It is so heartbreakingly true it will bring you to tears many times as you read. Someday this abuse has to be stopped. I love the way the book is written, with the horses telling the story. A very powerful book.Thank you, Mr Davis for writing this book. So many people choose not to see what is happening to these beautiful and naturally unique horses.

  3. My family is just getting into the Walking Horse industry, and I felt this book was a good way to find out some of the history of the breed.

I was very upset of find out that these animals are treated in such a manner. It almost makes me embarressed to say that I want to be a owner and breeder of these fine animals.

All I can say, is that now that I know what is actually happening, I can try to do all I can to promote sound horses and help in the fight to get this to come to end someday.

More people need to read this book, and maybe someday there will be enough of a push to make all this torture end.

  4. I showed pleasure Tennessee Walking horses for years and a padded horse on one occasion. I saw most all of the things mentioned in this book done to these wonderful horses, with perhaps one exception. Although I never sored any of my own personal horses, due to the fact I love them too much and a blue ribbon isn't that important to me, I was shown how to do it and encouraged to do it and did show horses which were sore (although I was not their owner but was riding them for their owner). I cared to much about my animals to sore them and was very interested in reading this book when I found out about it. It is pretty painful to read but it is very honest in describing what does happen to these wonderful horses. Unfortunately today the plantation pleasure horses are going through as much as the padded horses, only minus the pads. If only they could talk and Mr. Davis has done a really nice job giving them their due. I hope this book will enlighten many, but at the same time will not turn anyone away from this breed because it is a wonderful breed to own, ride and show; and all these things can be done successfully without abusing the horses. Funny how the characters in this book really remind me of some of the exact big time walking horse trainers and showmen I know of.

  5. I have owned Tennessee walking horses for years, but I never understood exactly what they went through in the industry's notion of "show training." Now I do. I felt like I came to know the young horse. I read the book in one sitting and then passed it on to another horse owner. It is hard to put down, and even harder to get over the anger it engenders. But it is not all hard reading. It captures the feelings of the show barn and the trainers and owners. Others have told me that this book speaks the truth.

5 comments about Anne Kursinski's Riding and Jumping Clinic: A Step-by-Step Course for Winning in the Hunter and Jumper Rings.

  1. I bought this book at the same time as "Hunter Seat Equitation" by George Morris. I much prefered Morris' style of presenting information and have been able to incorporate pieces of it much faster. Kursinski's approach to this book, essentially telling the reader to tell his or her instructor what to do, did not work well with me. Try telling a "lead mare" what to do in her own barn! From personal experience telling your trainer that a book determined your training program is not a bright thing to do. Maybe a self-taught rider would have more luck with this book than a person in riding lessons.

  2. Anne Kursinski has been my hero since her 1988 Silver Medal win on "Starman" during the Olympics. She has a beautiful style and presence to her riding. I purchased this book on Amazon and have thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It's very easy to understand for the beginner rider on up! I recommend this book to all of my riding students. A must have for sure! I'll even read it again!

  3. This book exceeded my expectations. As an intermediate rider, the combination of multiple illustrations and accompaning technical commentary is instrumental. This book covers basic flat work and jumping and makes the "upward transition" to advanced work. Anne Kursinski's written style uses common sense and visual imagery. After reading each chapter, I couldn't wait to try out her techniques on my horse.

If you want to become more connected with your horse through feel and athletic ability, this book will work for you.

Anne teaches you to communicate with your horse physically and emotionally. A combination that is essential but understated.

  4. This book is a great resource for any serious rider who wants to improve their skills. I was able to not only use Anne's theories in my own riding but also apply them to my students. She explains everything in a very straight forward manner with lots of illustrations for the many exercises she gives. Since I live in an area where the closest jumper trainer is almost 2 hours away, this was a great way to get new ideas to tackle problems and master the basics. Highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to better themselves as a rider.

  5. This book was excellent! It's perfect for anyone riding english weather you haven't even taken a lesson or you've been riding for 10 years! It's very in depth and will help you perfect your riding. It teachs the basics to advanced dressage and jumping. It includes great pictures and explains everything very well, and anyone can understand it. I HIGHLY reccomend it!
