5 comments about Basic Training of the Young Horse.
- I am starting a young horse and I found the book straightforward and well illustrated. My youngster is already at the point of being under saddle but this book will be a very good reference as we progress in training.
- No one can deny that Klimke was an incredible rider and trainer. The book reflects his experience and opinions about dealing with young horses. He encourages a careful and practiceds application of the aids in order to develop suppleness, throughness, and impulsion. while the book does a good job in describing the "ideal" I was hoping for more "how-to" logistics. The section on longeing does that in discussing the best equipment, how to attach side reins correctly, etc., but the remainder of the book is less "applied" and more "theoretical."
I have to say that I also object to other assumptions in the book about the general horse-owning population. For instance, Klimke says that in the first week at the barn, he only allows the grooms to handle the newly arrived horse and he is careful not to have any interaction during that time. Okkkkkkkk....
Despite some rather elitist assumptions, it's a good reference book for reading about how training for young horses should proceed--but it's short on practicalities and does not offer a very precise training program.
- This book, written by the late olympic dressage champion Reiner Klimke, is surely a standard reference. The English translation by Sigrid Young might be a little bit awkward at times (very noticable for a German native who owns the original, too), but the spirit and straightforwardness of Klimke's approach for the basic training of a dressage horse still comes across.
- This compact, informative and economical guide to starting young horses provides an excellent overview of training the young horse, from early ground work to starting over fences. Although the book is dated, the German scale of basic training principles is timeless and very much en vogue in the dressage community today. Based on sound principles and written by an accomplished horseman, this is one to read.
UPDATE - A year since my original review this has been the book I refer back to most of all, I think because of the handy size. Therefore, this book is well worth the money!!!
- I thoguht this book was great because it is small and easy to carry to the barn. The pictures help you remember what you read in a "jiffy". Some of the information seems old and maybe a litle out of date but overall I think its a book thats good for anyone with a horse in training.

- [[ASIN:1592289282 A Healthy Horse the Natural Way: A Horse Owner's Guide to Using Herbs, Massage, Homeopathy, and Other NaTURAL THERAPIES.
FANTASTIC BOOK, THE BEST I HAVE READ ON NATURAL THERAPIES FOR HORSES AS IT COVERS SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS ALL IN ONE BOOK
- This is a great well written book. I love the chapter on massage with the pictures and great explanations on How-To. The intoductions to every chapter are great as are all the contents in the chapter. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go "The Natural Way"!!
- Plenty of books cover horse health - but how many focus on natural treatments and options for preventing illness? Any who want to go the herbal route for the horse will welcome a book which covers not just herbs but massage, aromatherapy, vibrational healing and more. Chapters link common horse conditions to effective natural healing choices and expand greatly on the options a horse owner can choose for optimum horse health.

1 comments about Discovering Natural Horsemanship: A Beginner's Odyssey.
- Natural Horsemanship has apparently been around for quite a few years now. Being new to the world of horses I just learned about this type of training a few short months ago. Mr. Moates gives a wonderfully insightful, and often amusing, introduction to the natural training method. Since I am new to horses this book was perfect for me. Anyone with a love of horses will enjoy this book. And it may inspire you, no matter what your age, to get involved with horses. This book never gets bogged down or tedious. It is fun!

1 comments about Homeopathy for Horses (Threshold Picture Guide).
- This book will leave all other Homeopathy books written about the Equine in the dust,
The care and detail in the writing translates into the most thorough Homeopathy book for
horses that you will find anywhere. Excellent detail throughout, well explained, and a top-notch
index which makes it easy to find a symptom in an emergency. Contains emergency section,
as well as pre and post-op remedies. So well done that a beginner can understand it but so detailed
that a Professional will find the rare and obscure disease or illness included. Kudos to Dr. Couzens
for the finest animal publication of its kind. If you are experienced in homeopathy this may also help you
with your Dog or Cat in such things as pre/post op, eye problems, skin problems, etc.
A Best Buy for the Money!

2 comments about Intermediate English Exercises (Arena Pocket Guides).
- This book makes a nice gift for horse lovers but is a bit small for the price. It could be a few more pages for the price or lower the price by a few dollars. My daughter really liked the book so all-in-all it's not a bad deal. I bought the other 2 books in the English Exercises series and my daughter also enjoyed them as well.
- This arena pocket guide is an excellent riding instruction tool. In concise language Cherry Hill gives easy-to-follow exercises for the intermediate rider. The goals of these exercises are to 1) improve the rider's balance and use of the aids; 2) increase suppleness in the horse through bending; 3) improve transitions 4) develop lateral work 5) and begin collection. The book, made of sturdy cardstock, is just the right sized to stick in a back pocket, so you never have to leave the barn without it. Each exercise is covered in one to two pages and comes with clear illustrations. Ms. Hill includes a total of ten exercises in her book and closes with an intermediate riding test. This book is a must have for the rider who cannot afford weekly riding lessons or who needs help working on fundamental intermediate riding skills. Highly recommended.

4 comments about The Legendary California Hackamore & Stock Horse.
- This book is excellent for both the novice and veteran horseperson. There are a few mistakes that the editor didn't catch (some spelling errors of people mentioned in the text), but overall a very attractive and informative book. This book has a deep personal meaning for me because in the late 1970's I was fortunate to have been a "student" of Bobby's at his ranch in Pleasant Grove, CA. Even as a young girl I admired Bobby's talent with horses and one should especially take note of how he uses his hands when he rides. As a horseperson I also tried to immitate his light touch on a horses' mouth. It's very fitting that the cover photograph is a picture of Bobby's hands!
- This is the finest book I have seen produced that catalogs the greats of the Hackamore and Stock horse industry. Its got them all. The photos are stunning and the description of this kind of training is first class. Great book!
- Bobby Ingersoll has written not only the perfect training manual for starting young horses, but a beautifully illustrated and informative coffee table book as well. He has given credit to the talented artists who braid these hackamores and what is unfortunately becoming a lost art. His soft and gentle style of starting the young colt through feel rather than demanding submission through force will benefit everyone who truly loves horses and strives to be a real horseman. His tribute to the true horsemen and horsewomen of past and present makes you want to just stand up and cheer. Bravo, Bobby Ingersoll!
- Beautiful!! Beautiful!!
The Mexican Traditions on starting green horses has been handed down from generation to generation. The Jaquima came first, with it the colt was taught to handle himself to perfection and bridling is the last step.
Training horses is a serious business..., the Bible of training colt with Hackamore is Ed Connell book, but if you want to tune some details of your training with the hackamore, this it is the book that you need.
The legendary California Hackamore and the stocke Horse is another great book with enormous tips and knowledge, beautiful pictures!!.
Right Now I'm looking for the Benny Guitron DVD, the Master on training horses with Jaquima.
El Vaquero Mexicano "El Charro" ---- The American Cowboy "The Gentleman".
¡Hermoso! ¡Hermoso!
"The Legendary California Hackamore and the stock horse", es otro gran libro con enormes consejos y conocimientos asi como hermosas fotografias!!.
EL Vaquero Mexicano es "EL Charro" --- El vaquero Americano es "El Caballero".

4 comments about Cleve Wells Going For Broke: 15 Lessons To Teach Your Young Horse To Be A Willing, Respectful Partner In Hand & Under Saddle.
- Cleve Wells has an excellent step-by-step book here. I have about 35 rides on my girl and very much recomend it. Wells methods are very pretty easy to follow too. I think Wells has helped me be more patient and less demanding of instent success. Just buy the book, do what he says and be patient. It's worth your time and money.
- This book is an excellent manual for those folks who need a good guidebook on the topic.
It is a general colt-starting book rather than a book about training Western Pleasure specialists.
- Even though I am a Hunter O/F rider, I was able to take some pointers from this book and apply it to my flat work and basic listening skills of my horse.
- I think it's a wonderful book, and for starting a young horse it's a wonderful guide. Simple, easy step-by-step guides on how to ground drive and then transferring it to saddle, then all the in-saddle work you'll need to have a good, firm riding foundation on your horse. I thought it would have more on groundwork, like some on-the-ground leadership establishing exercises, but I think I just misread it. There IS some wonderful stuff about teaching a young horse to tie, as well as using it and tying them longer and longer to teach patience.
Overall it's a wonderful book for the horse who has the VERY basics down (leading, picking up feet, etc.) and will lead you through the rest, sacking out, tying up, saddling, ground driving, NECK REINING (VERY good section here!), and more foundation building riding lessons.

3 comments about What Horses Teach Us: Life's Lessons Learned from Our Equine Friends.
- This book reflects how creative and unfathomable our Creator God in Heaven really is! The fact that all living creatures have the same Creator God shows how intrinsically and uniquely designed each species is to clearly represent itself.
As humans (we're not animals - Thank God!:), this book represents the fact that we are able to read, think, reason, feel, make intellectual decisions, love and be loved. Animals, on the other hand, can only represent themselves in the station of life they have been created for - they are the handiwork of our imaginative God who allows animals to be blessings which we may thoroughly enjoy and appreciate.
Saturate yourself with the sweet sentiments of this endearing book...take a quiet moment to reflect on what the pages represent. A picture is worth a thousand words. Allow God to reveal Himself through His Creation just as He promises He will in Romans chapter 1 (take a look at the Holy Bible) and be renewed by the goodness He has toward us! Enjoy...
- The previous reviewer who said the book had no content...was just pictures is definately off base with their evaluation. The disappointed reviewer was probably expecting one of those horse psychology books. Yes, there are mostly just pictures, but they are wonderful, humerous affirmations of animal behaviour from which we as human animals can be reminded of our own wisdom and folly and our connection to the animal kingdom and the oneness of all living things. The pictures make you wonder how long the photographer sat around waiting for the animal to do that. And the lessons and commentary for the pictures fit perfectly. I love all the books in this series..What Cats, Dogs, Horses, etc. Can Teach Us, and highly recommend them. They make wonderful gifts for animal lovers and are great to have handy to pick up for a good chuckle or a warm fuzzy emotional pick me up.
- There is no content. It's just pictures with captions. I want to return it, but when I try on line, it tells me the book is not returnable. I just received it yesterday.

5 comments about Making Your Own Jumps (Step By Step Picture Guides).
- The books in this series are usually quite good, however, this particular title is misleading. There is no actual construction of jumps, but a collection of types of jumps for a course. This book seems nearly a duplicate of designing a jump course. I was disappointed.
- It shows several examples of different jumps but no detailed directions. It does provide some helpful tips for constucting cross country jumps but not much. Check out "Jumps, etc." by Lisa Campbell or "Building Show Jumps" by Andy Radford.
Good Luck...
- does not really tell how to make them-- only some pictures-- save the money and go to some horse trial facility websites for similar or better pictures.
- This is not a "book", this is barely even a "pamphlet". Complete waste of money!
- I was shocked when this "book" arrived. 24 pages hardly constitues a "Book". It is a brief pamphlet that gives a 101 of (mostly cross country) jump design. No instructions on how to "make your own jumps" here. Don't waste your money on this one.
