1 comments about Mouths and Bits (Threshold Picture Guides Series).

  1. I found this book, by way of a quick perusal, to be easy to understand about the use of teeth in telling a horses age. The written contents were easy to comprehend, as opposed to vet books and others that I read through, the depictions clear and concise.

EXACTLY what the average horseperson wants in this type of book. We have an agistment property and are in the business of re-educating horses and selling horses, so this book is a must for us.

We have always used veterinary text, which is rather hard to follow for the layman.

2 comments about Practical Dressage Manual.

  1. This book is very concise, clear and helpful with explinations of basic and advanced dressage movements. It inculdes extremly articulate definitions of the gaits, aids and basic riding terms. The diagrams of aids are very useful. The photos help to give the reader a clearer picture of the concepts beign described. This book would be good for any rider to read. Written by one of the top dressage riders, it can be a bit tedious at times, since the authour's native tounge is not english.

  2. A condensed but informative book covering the basic gaits through upper level movements, also covers the riders aids and position, and a brief chapter on competition. This book doesn't go into great detail but has good information in it for anyone interested in dressage. It outlines several exercises to develop the horse, and riders aids for movements are illustrated as if you are looking down on the horse. Written by a very experienced rider emphasizing the "art" of dressage. A good addition to any dressage library.

3 comments about The Power of Positive Horse Training: Saying Yes to Your Horse (Howell Equestrian Library).

  1. This book gives good incite to the person who is trying to partner with their horse. Trying to find your way when everyone has an opinion is hard. This approach is a balanced approach, good for you and the horse.

  2. I did thoroughly enjoy this book. I have done and read a significant amount of natural training methods so some of the ground work stuff was fairly elementary and sometimes not as 'natural' as I would like - found it to be a little incongruent with the 'positive' and 'saying yes' part of the title.

None-the-less the under saddle training suggestions - especially teaching the half halt and circle work - were invaluable and made this book a worthwhile purchase. Like any book I its important to take away what is useful to you and not be too critical of the remainder which may work very well for others.

  3. What a great book! With so many books available on natural horsemanship, horse behavior and training it's easy to accummulate a whole equestrian library rather quickly. There are really only two books you can't go without though:
Gincy Bucklin's What Your Horse Wants You to Know and Sarah Blanchard's The Power of Positive Horse Training.
Not only are both books full of great suggestions but more importantly they help bridge the language barrier between horse and human. Wonderful books to own, easy and interesting to read and great reference tools and morale builders when you and your equine partner hit a road block.

5 comments about Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies.

  1. This is a marvelous book and companion to the video which deals with wild horses in the Rockies. The photography is superb and the author's style is easy reading while capturing the beauty of the wild horse. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in horses, both domestic and wild.

  2. The book is wonderful. Beautifully written and photographed. However, people should know that Cloud's herd of wild horses is in great danger of being rounded up and permanently removed from the Pryor Mountains in Montana which has been cleared of all other herds of Mustangs. The Bureau of Land Management has caved in to cattle and sheep ranchers who want all wild horses removed from the range, including Public Lands and areas such as the Pryor Mountains where cattle are not grazed.

  3. The heck with being a book for teen girls ----- it is a book for all horse lovers and non horse lovers alike! Beautiful photos and a GREAT TRUE Story! It is WONDERFUL!

  4. Cloud: Wild Stallion of the Rockies is an interesting book, with vivid photographs of mustangs. I received it as a gift back when I was still obsessed with horses, and could not get enough of it. Even now that I only slightly like horses anymore, I find this book very enjoyable.

Interspersed with moving photography, this is Ginger Kathrens' story of a wild stallion called Cloud. She followed his herd before he was born, and followed him all over afterwards. A simple but well-written documentary that, I can only imagine, rivals the show produced on Nature's television series, this is a must for any young horse-lover, or even an older one.

I highly recommend this book. The pictures are full-color and the story is superb; you will be getting your money's worth with this book. Long live Cloud!

  5. Cloud, Wild Stallion of the Rockies is the BEST horse book that I have ever read! It is a true story about wild horses in Montana. It is interesting and very exciting! I also enjoy watching the DVD. I highly recommend this book to any one who likes horses! Definitely a 5 star book!

2 comments about Horse Breeds of North America.

  1. Similar-sounding books usually have large-size formats and coffee table-like hardcover weight: the joy of Horse Breeds of North America is that it offers up an affordable, easy 96-page photo display in pocket size lending to toting. This means you can take it along on a car ride, trip, or anyplace else a horse might show up. Quick sidebars provide height, description, history, and suitability for potential owners.

  2. The cover of the book says 96 at a glance profiles, but there are 204 pages, and more than 96 profiles. This is a interesting little book printed on high quality paper with a lot on information for each breed , very easily understood, and read, with some very beautiful horses and pictures, also, very informative.

1 comments about Saddle Fitting Essentials.

  1. "Saddle Fitting for the Horse Owner" is an excellent introduction to the art and science of fitting saddles. It explains in great detail, the construction of various types of saddles, and the reason for that construction. It explains how each type of saddle needs to fit a horse, as well as the consequences of none-fit - which really explained a lot about my horse and his behaviour. I saw a lot of things fitting into place, which I hadn't understood before.

I saw a lot of the mistakes I've made over the years - and some very big ones that I've made recently.

This book should be a "pre-quirement" for horse ownership, most certainly a required reading for anybody who ever saddles or rides a horse. Excellent writing, great research, wonderful understanding of the topic.

4 comments about Some More Horse Tradin'.

  1. My Dad traded Horses and Ben green is the real deal and is a superb storyteller. All of Ben Green's 5 books are excellent reading. Enjoy stories of a time and place that is woefully gone.

  2. I loved the book. Ben Green gives a wonderful peek into an era gone by. He uses the lingo of the day and the stories are wonderful to anyone interested in horses and days when there were more horses than cars.

  3. This is such a fun book to read that it is hard to put down. The reader learns so many "tricks" of horse trading through Ben Greens stories. It is so enjoyable you will want to buy his other books also.

  4. This was an excellent book. I greatly enjoyed each and every adventure that Ben K. Green takes you through in the book. In a time where everything is done the easy way it is great to be able to look back and see how things realy used to be done. Through this book you are able to get a very clear picture of the old west. I loved reading about all the different ways the horse traders thought of to skam each other and somehow they both thought they were getting a good deal. I thought this book was great and was not able to put it down once I picked it up. I can't wait to read more by Ben K. Green.
