5 comments about Trail Riding: Train, Prepare, Pack Up & Hit the Trail.
- This book is an excellent guide for an A to Z overview of taking a horse out on the trail. I only wish i had read it sooner!
Makes a great gift for the beginning trail rider.
- This book was great to read. I learned alot from it and will continue using it as a training reference guide for my 13 yr. old Quarter Horse & my 4 yr. old Paint.
- Trail Riding by Rhonda hart Poe is more then just what the title indicates.
She takes you from getting ready to ride through the Trail Rider's Survival Guide and much more in the process. With only five years involved with horses and a few hundred miles on trails she leads you through every phase of trail horsemanship.
There is not adequate space here to pass along how much I learned and will use in the future "on the trail". Ms Poe covers everything from tack and gear for the trail to preparing you and your horse, whether you ride for pleasure or in competition.
Married to a true "Horse-Lady" with more then 20,000 miles on trails I suspected it was my inexperience until after she read the book. She enjoyed it and indicated that she had picked up a lot of tips that she had never thought of. That's from a woman who has a bookshelf full of books on trail riding.
The book was very educational and fun to read with a lot of information for beginners and experienced riders alike. I have no doubt that I will be a better trail riders after my first read and intend to read it a few more times. I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be a better horseman, whether on trails or around the pasture.
- Trail Riding: Train, Prepare, Pack Up & Hit The Trail is an in-depth compendium and guidebook especially for horse owners and horse riders. Written by horse owner and "The Gated Horse" magazine editor Rhonda Hart Poe, Trail Riding covers everything from how to use necessary trail tack and gear, to proper training, vices to avoid (in both rider and animal), survival tips for worst-case scenarios, advice for performing well in competitive trail riding, and much more. Black-and-white illustrations and numerous sidebars filled with tips, tricks and techniques round out Trail Riding, a definitive guide, which is enthusiastically recommended for riders of all skill and experience levels.
- This is a wonderfully informative book.
Rhonda covers every topic you could possibly think of and will answer questions you may not have realized you had.

5 comments about The Complete Book of Foaling: An Illustrated Guide for the Foaling Attendant (Howell Reference Books).
- Was expecting my first 2 foals this year and needed help to know what to
expect and do. Very imformative though I never got to use any of it as both my mares delivered quietly and safely on their own. I missed it! :-(
- I have been meaning to write this review for a year. Last year my foal did not get enough oxygen and could not suck. This book explained *exactly* what this was and how to deal with it. It was only on a couple of pages, but it was precisely what I needed to know. My foal could have died due to my ignorance, and as far as I am concerned, this booked saved his life. Today he is a big beautiful yearling and his new owner adores him.
Now I recommend this book to everyone on my horse list. The least I can do is write a good review for the author.
- This was our first foal and after reading this book we expected the worst. Fortunately, we put to use some things we learned from the book and we have a beautiful new addition to our farm. However, reading about everything that could go wrong did not accentuate the positive. The illustrations are in black and white and there are not enough of them and they are often not clear enough.
- As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.
- I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.

5 comments about Cavalletti: Schooling of Horse and Rider over Ground Poles.
- This is an excellent book for those looking for a systematic way of including cavalletti in their youngster's training. Ingrid and Reiner give excellent explanations and also provide photos/drawings to further describe what they are looking for. I have used this method in training my own youngsters with good results. One caution however, it doesn't matter how good the information is if the person applying it is unskilled or inexperienced.
- I couldn't put this book down! Chocked full of color photos makes this pleasing to use and wonderful to leaf through for ideas and an excellent reference. A good reminder of sound, basic training principles. A great addition to any library for dressage, hunter or jumper riders.
- I just love this book. I've never been so inspired to make a trip to Home Depot - I couldn't wait to build my own cavalletti and get out there and give it a try. Directions for building your own can be found here: www.texashorsemansdirectory.com/thdcav.htm This book provides an excellent introduction to working with cavalletti and is a must have for the English rider. Easy to read, well illustrated, great schooling plans and the gymnastic jumping section at the end is an added bonus. FUN, FUN, FUN!
- I'm not a brave jumper and this book has really encouraged me to incorporate more ground poles and cavalletti into my regular training regime.
My main interest is dressage but my enthusiasm for trying more pole and jumping work has been set alight by this book. They cover everything from the most basic information like boots for your horse, distances for different gaits and even how to adjust side reins correctly, right through to patterns and techniques to keep things interesting. The language used is simple, conversational and incredibly useful. Each topic - lunging, straight work over poles, gymnastic jumping etc - is addressed in detail with troubleshooting solutions provided for common problems. There are sample work schedules and cavalletti patterns for most objectives. This is a true working book that will be valuable to all levels of rider.
- This book helped me immensely with training my 3 year-old standardbred and 4 year-old thoroughbred. I would recommend this book to anyone who is training their horse(s) on their own. It gives great detail in instruction and the lessons explained really do work on young and older horses.

1 comments about Breeding the Racehorse.
- this is without a doubt one of the most valued books I have in my "racing library". I race and breed quarter horses, but because of the lack of material on that specific subject I am often drawn to books on TBs. The most amazing aspect of this book is that if you changed the names and dates, Mr Tesio's ideas and predictions are extremely accurate in todays world. The openess in which he shares his ideas and the details of his breeding program are great . Very concise and to the point.
