1 comments about Horses In the Yard (and Other Equestrian Dilemmas).

  1. If you own horses, "Horses In the Yard" will ring all kinds of bells with you, tickling your funny bone with every ring. If you never owned a horse but hope to, "Horses In the Yard" will give you a basic course in such ownership, coaxing laughs from you while you learn. Even if horses are last on your list of favorite things, you'll want to read "Horses In the Yard." The solid information in the book, and there is a lot of it, is written in a delightfully humorous manner that will have you chuckling at every paragraph. More than just worth the money, it's worth your time.

5 comments about The All-Around Horse and Rider.

  1. The All-Around Horse And Rider by Donna Snyder Smith makes me wish I could go back and do my equestrian life all over again... to do it right! I learned about horses during the summers when I was 10,11&12 by spending my days at Fairmount Riding Stable. I never had a lesson until I was married. Once I owned a horse, I read a number of "how-to" books... but I found it difficult to put the information into actuality. Enter The All- Around Horse And Rider... I think it should be retitled as:
The Novice Rider's Bible - or - How To Become An Accomplished Equestrian

If I had had access to this wonderfully good book of discerning advice, I would have learned before my mistakes, instead of from them. The best part of riding was becoming one with a horse... being a team... looking after one another. This information packed book, so full of simple, basic and insightful advice, can help riders of all disciplines to do exactly that. Marie Weber

  2. As an equine professional (equine bodyworker) I have found this book to be the best guide to the horse industry. I am constantly quoting chapters out of the book to some first time horse owners and some very experienced owners to help guide them in their decisions when it comes to the health and happiness of their horse as well as finding a cost effective way to solve their equine/equestrian problems. When you own a horse the chapter "When to ask for help and how and where to find it" can save you thousands of dollars and perhaps even from serious injury/accident. I have a few clients who just love to ride but don't want to show, and Ms. Snyder-Smith gives lots of alternatives as to fun activities you can do with your horse, that don't involve showing. It is an excellent reference book, even for the experienced horse owner who did not get a good foundation. Every client of mine who got the book was so grateful for the knowledge, and I have received numerous thank you's from them. I also loved her book "The Complete Guide to Endurance Riding and Competition"

  3. As a novice rider, the quest for knowledge can be like drinking from a fire hose -way too much unfiltered information for the untrained. Fortunately, I discovered the book 'The All-Around Horse and Rider'. This book covers a broad range of topics absolutely relevant to those striving to learn the fundamentals of horsemanship. The book is well thought out, with each chapter providing progressive information. The inclusion of checklists, quizzes, numerous illustrations and diagrams make this book my favorite reference and the one I go back to time and time again.

  4. So you understand from where I'm coming: I know little about horses and horsemanship, I'm a senior man looking into a Long Ride, that's a minimum of one thousand miles at one stretch and am researching everything I can find about horses and what it will take for me and one or two horses to make it across the USA. WILD AT HEART opened my eyes to the possibility of doing something so seemingly crazy. TALKING WITH HORSES and THE HORSES OF PROUD SPIRIT along with many of the comments by horse rescuers, and people such as Dyan of Missouri Foxtrotters A - Z have been the wings beneath my wings, if you will, for this voyage. The forementioned are a stand for the wellbeing of horses, coming from a place of compassion and kindness. Just like the Dahli Lama says when asked what his religion is - he replies "Kindness". Donna Snyder-Smith's book seems directly opposite. First, it is a 'school text book', with too many uses of the word 'obedience' to be a stand for the welfare of horses. Two, it is geared to winning. If you one of the millions 'A-Types, a super achiever with corportate mentality, where to win is the only goal then this is your book. I quote Dorothy Parker, "This book is not to be tossed lightly aside, but to be hurled with great force".

  5. Donna Snyder-Smith's book encapsulates the best topics of the famous clinics she taught. The format is very readable, engaging and interesting. If you ride horses, read this book. You won't regret it.

1 comments about Breaking Bad Habits in Horses: Tried and Tested Methods of Overcoming Faults and Vices.

  1. This practical reference-guide is clearly written and easy for any horse person to follow. The book is organized by problem, and each problem features excellent full-color photos, possible motivations behind it, and suggested solutions. Sensible and enlightening for a beginning-intermediate horse person. Some may be review for the more seasoned pro. It's also reassuring to be able to open a book and say "Ah ha, there we are, so that's what's been happening." If you are looking for a practical, illustrated, meat-and-potatoes problem solving guide, this is an excellent choice.

4 comments about Dressage: A Study of the Fine Points of Riding.

  1. I bought this book back in the 70's and had immediate success in apply Mr. Wynmalen's techniques with my off the track Thoroughbred. This book shows that caring about the horse is not something new. Dressage: A Study of the Fine Points of Riding is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't want their horse to be miserable - and who wants a horse who is light, responsive, and a pleasure to ride.

  2. I bought the hardback version of this book in the 1950's and it has been the one I have used most ever since. Dressage itself is a useful training method for all disciplines. Wynmalen makes the "how-to" clear to those of us who do not have access to a teacher. In the 1950's I didn't even have access to videos to show how the exercises were supposed to look and feel when done right, yet the book made almost everything clear -- about the only thing I didn't understand from the book alone was the half-halt. Wynmalen's irreplaceable contribution is in the respect he shows the horse, which leads to understanding. His focus is on better communication and performance, not show success (although he had that too). A gentle, understanding, master at work. Other favorites of mine are The Schooling of the Western Horse, by John Richard Young, and the works of Mark Rashid -- start with A Good Horse is Never a Bad Color. The Rashid works are for those who know the basic cues, since he doesn't cover that.

  3. This book....what can I say? It literally is the best book written on riding I have yet come across. Ironic, isn't it, that I am not an English rider, but a Western rider and still found this book to be of great help. Yes, help. It describes in graphic detail what you should really understand before even thinking about mounting a horse, plus tips and guidelines on what you should know when you do mount a horse.

I really did find this book invaluable. I have owned it for years and I'm still learning from it. I find it absolutely great for references.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who rides horses, and to those who don't, just so they can truly understand the significance of horse intelligence and human/horse companionship.

  4. This book is remarkable in that the author always puts the horse first. Written in 1952 the author is thoroughly modern in stressing the establishment of a dialogue with the horse. Bear with the language of the early 1900s and be enlightened!
