  1. This photo-essay is breathtaking. You feel as though you are there. I gave this book as a gift to a 13 year old girl and she adores it. Well worth the money. Highly recommended.

5 comments about Dressage for the 21st Century.

  1. This book is an instant classic. It discusses in detail some points that could take one years to otherwise figure out, for example, the truly correct passage. Beautifully written, it is a masterpiece that belongs in every dressage riders library.

  2. It is defenetly a great book, very philosophical one. However, I won't recommend it for beginner dressage riders. It lacks the simple practical riding instructions and tips, But still is a great book.

  3. A fantastic book with some magnificent pictures.
extremely educational for the equine world.
    Well done!

  4. This is the most technical book that Belasik has published to date, and it provides a visual counterpart to his outstanding audiotape series. The pictures are particularly useful; the best of them bravely show the master in the "bad" moments-- hanging on the inside rein, for instance. These pictures assist the rider in recognizing the fool's gold that feels like bend but is weakness; I return to the mirrors in my own school equipped with brutal honesty. His descriptions of the logical progression of training will help any rider to comprehend her progress with a young horse, or her relationship with a schooled horse. Although this book is a more technical treatise than Riding Toward the Light or Songs of Horses, it shows the same poetic voice that makes those books so memorable. In my humble opinion, this book-- in combination with the audiotapes-- is the best book to educate the rider about the purest principles of riding integrated with the practical means of achieving them.

  5. This has to be the most complete book on Equitation to the highest levels, ever to be written. It is quite simply, a masterpiece- highly readable, yet totally scholarly, as would be expected from an author such as Paul Belasik, whose previous books have gained him a worldwide, and well deserved, following.

The photographs which lavishly illustrate the book are exemplary in every way- Belasik's seat is impeccable and the horses look at ease in their work- real harmony between horse and rider.

Paul Belasik's vast knowledge of Classical Equitation, is woven effortlessly with his own conclusions, arrived at through the odyssey of research that he undertook, and chronicled in his book 'Riding Towards the Light'.

This book is a must for anyone who sees dressage first and foremost as an Art, and only secondarily as a sport.

  1. This is a truly remarkable book packed with pictures and easy to understand guides. I own two horses and they did not want to go into the horse box, but now, they love going in! It has become second nature to them and has changed my life forever. This book is a must for any of you owners out there who battle to load your horses. Safe, effictive and definatly humane. Kelly Marks, being Monty Roberts's protegee, is doing everything to make the world a better place for horses and humans.

  1. This book is so good that it will survive the test of time no matter what. Reading and understanding it gives the reader the ability to judge correctly how to superbly care for horses. I'm very glad that Dr. Rooney has updated it, but I sure wouldn't be throwing out the old versions yet! I've worked with horses for 46 years, and I always have a copy of Rooney handy, plus a loaner copy for others.

A priceless book for anyone involved in the care of horses.

  2. This first edition is long, long out-of-date, and it is high time Amazon woke up and stopped misleading the public by offering remaindered books without so identifying them.

2 comments about Riding (Eyewitness Companions).

  1. Way back when I still lived on our family's farm, we purchased a couple horses. One was for my younger brother--who then discovered a Honda 50 and lost interest in horses rapidly and another for my youngest brother. Every once in awhile, I would saddle up and ride one or the other horse. I never learned a lot of basics (there was no one to teach me in the immediate area!).

For instance, I never learned how to handle the trot properly (I'd bounce around in hilarious fashion!). The description of how to handle that particular gait in this book is very well done. After having read it, I could now do the job properly! I will also say that there is something pretty exciting about riding a horse when she or he is moving at a full gallop. The horse's breathing, seeing the horse begin to sweat, hearing the hooves pounding, experiencing the power of the animal. . . . Yikes! I didn't ride very much, but I do recall the unique sights, sounds, and senses accompanying it.

This book is a nice introduction to riding, covering many subjects--from how to saddle a horse up to competition. The early parts of the book discuss the history of riding and speak of the horse as a creature (including the four gaits and how to behave around horses). The following section focuses on the basics, including saddling a horse. Take my advice from experience: horses can be clever! I can recall saddling up one of our horses and climbing aboard, only to feel the saddle slipping around. I soon discovered that horses might hold their breaths. Upon being saddled, there was a release and the saddle was now loose. Beware!

There is much discussion on caring for horses, learning to ride, different styles of riding (English versus Western), competing, and riding with friends.

All in all, a good resource, especially for neophytes. As noted above, I wish that I had possessed this little volume while I would ride every so often.

  2. This book is great especially if you are a beginning rider like me. Lots of excellent photos and how-to instructions. I liked it so much I bought another for a horsey friend's Christmas present! Highly recommended.
