- Does not go into a lot of detail. Reads as if you already know what you are trying to accomplish.Would not recommend this book for the person with a young horse just starting out or if you are into Western Riding. I did get some pointers but not what I was looking for.
- This is a great book for teaching and training younger horses. It gives step-by-step information, and what to do if something goes wrong. Must have for any breeder!

1 comments about The Domestic Horse: The Origins, Development and Management of its Behaviour.
- This is a very interesting book giving an overview on recent research results of horse behaviour. The text also gives a lot of relevant references. In addition to many other books on equine behaviour, this one addresses the impact of the domestic environment on horse behaviour with special emphasis on riding and training. I would very much recommend that book for everybody interested in horses, however, a certain knowledge on behaviour is necessary for understanding.

5 comments about Horse Fixin': Forty Years of Working With Problem Horses.
- This little book provides both humor and truths about riding and training horses.
- In my opinion, Frankie McWhorter should be in prison.
I would caution anyone against purchasing this book. I was hoping to discover another perspective on traditional training methods but instead was appalled by the abject cruelty that Mr. McWhorter advocates. Anyone who would subject horses to being shot repeatedly, or stabbed with a pitchfork over and over and exposed to countless other atrocities cannot be taken seriously as an educator. There is little to be learned from this individual. Passing off his methods as quaint, old-fashioned, and anecdotal do nothing to diminish the fundamental immorality of his techniques. I have returned the copy of the book that I unwittingly purchased as I begrudge Mr. McWhorter a single cent from the sale of his perverse approach to horsemanship. Instead, I prefer to spend my time and money adopting credible, effective methods pioneered by men like Chris Irwin. Such trainers clearly know that training often requires considerable strength and assertiveness, but never do they resort to sickening, savage brutality.
- If you don't know much about true horse nature or how a horse actually thinks, you aren't going to like this book. You will think the author is too crude. However, if you are looking for "real" answers to horse behavior problems, this book will give you some ideas that really work. This author knows horses and he's had a lot of experience dealing with dangeruous habits. His advice is probably the most "honest" I've read in a long time. Seems like nobody wants to admit that to change a horse's habit of behavior, you have to make the "bad behavior" very uncomfortable and the "good behavior" very rewarding. The author of this book gives several good examples of this.
The forward of this book, states the author's methods may be outdated and are not appropriate for our modern times. That's not true. Every top trainer I know uses the same kind of logic explained in this book. Why? Because it's the truth. If you are interested in learning training techniques that really work, go to my web site and read my "training tips". Go to www.HorseTrainingVideos.com Larry Trocha
- I loved this book. Granted a lot of the advice is old fashioned and by today's standards harsh, but if you look at the "cause and effect" reasoning behind the methods they are mostly sound. Throughout the book the author does acknowledge how times have changed, and does not expect people to accept everything. Mostly he is telling horse stories from his life. The advice for handling horses that buck and rear was invaluable. Simple methods for correcting and fixing behavior is much more valuable than the cliche "a horse never misbehaves on purpose" which most authors hang on. Or the old "does your saddle fit" sidestep.
- This book is a horrible example of how horses have been abused by men who feel a need to exert their dominance over them. The atrocities Frankie McWhorter inflicted on horses he worked with disgusted me and I hope no one follows any of his suggestions like tying a horse's head in the air and leaving him that way for hours, or tying a horse up on the ground and stabbing it with a pitch fork until the horse bleeds, or shooting a horse with a BB gun. Who in their right mind would cause any animal such pain and anguish and call themselves a "horseman". If Mr. McWhorter is not dead yet, someone should do these things to him and see how he likes it. I pity the poor horses that crossed paths with this monster. Thank God there are trainers in the world now who preach and practice working with these beautiful creatures with patience, love, and understanding.

- I find this book has useful information, but am very disappointed the book's binding fell apart after only 6 months.
That makes it difficult to use with the pages falling out.
- This book has been great in our mixed Practice. We use this as a quick reference guide and the information is concise and easy to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone who isn't a full time equine vet and needs a handy reference. Good drug charts and well set out chapters.
- The book is fantastic...the web site has the wrong authors listed. It should say Rose and Hodsgon...not McKeever
- A handbook to rival the most extensive textbooks devoted to equine veterinary medicine and surgery! The second edition of The Manual of Equine Practice still retains the same easily readable format as the first edition, but the original authors have gathered world renowned experts in their fields, to assist.
The book is divided into body systems and includes individual conditions as 'sub-chapters'. They are then broken down into history and presenting signs, clinical findings and diagnosis, differential diagnosis (invaluable reference), and treatments. This is the same format as you would use if a animal were presented to you in your practice. Overall, a superb book and completely invaluable for vets, vet techs and students. Perhaps the only drawback is that I wouldn't recommend it for the average owner and/or trainer, unless they have a very good understanding of veterinary practice in general.

4 comments about Tschiffely's Ride: Southern Cross to Pole Star.
- This is a most incredible story about Aime Tschiffley and his 2 criollo horse, Mancha and Gato, who in 1925, walked/rode from Argentina all the way to Washington, DC. The journey carried them 10,000 miles in 2-1/2 years across the most inhospitable and remote regions one can imagine. They endured heat and cold, sickness and hunger, climbed the Andes and walked the depths of the rain forests. In the end, they were welcomed as heros everywhere they went. Tschiffley even met with the President in the oval office and spoke before the National Geographic Society. The most heart-warming part of this improbable tale is the bond between man and horse. It's sad at times, as when Mancha was struck by a car, and comedic at times, as when Mancha bucked his way through an award presentation ceremony in a Mexico City bullring. The last pages of the book are guaranteed to put a lump in your throat. What a great read, even if it was published in 1933!
- Aime Tschiffley, the most resiliant and capable of Buenos Aires' schoolmasters, wrote this truly astonishing story of his ride from Argentina to Washington, DC. South and Central America before WWII was still in many ways as the old Spanish had left it - some of it deliciously civilized, much of it as wild as can be imagined. With his two remarkable Creole horses, Mancha and Gato, Tschiffley journeys through a world that no longer exists today and seems remote and ancient to the modern reader. Tschiffley's prose is somewhat matter-of-fact, but in some ways this serves to emphasise the very strangeness of the countryside and its peoples, and underscores the author's own courage. Tshiffley is a product of his times, and some of his sentiments are out of place today, but this too places this book within a time and place long past. From "Don Roberto's" oddly moving introduction to journey's end in the United States, one grows to admire Tschiffley and love his horses, the two friends Mancha and Gato.
- FROM BUENOS AIRES TO WASHINGTON DC IN TWO AND A HALF YEARS ON HORSEBACK. A.F. TSCHIFFELY RODE TEN THOUSAND MILES FROM THE SOUTHERN CROSS TO THE POLAR STAR AROUND 1930. HE MORE THAN LIKELY WAS THE ONLY MAN EVER TO DO THIS AT ANY TIME; CERTAINLY TO WRITE ABOUT IT. REMOTE CITIES AND SEAPORTS, BACK TO THE PAST AND ON LONELY TRAILS DID THE MAN TRAVEL. TOUCHING FROM TIME TO TIME ON HARDSHIP, SOLVING PROBLEMS, CONFRONTING THE CURIOUS, HE AND HIS TWO HORSES HAD A GREAT ADVENTURE.
- It's a bold undertaking by a man who learned to live very closely with two horses. The horses were the resource that enabled him to succeed in this adventure of 10,000 miles from Buenos Aires to Washington DC. It's a page-turner!

2 comments about The Majesty of the Horse (American Landmarks).
- If you're a horse lover and want to know more about those beautiful creatures and want to see some great color photos of them this is really a very nice book for your shelf. The author has written a good story with lots of facts. And there are some pictures here that will really knock your eyes out.
- Yes, Server's "The Majesty of the Horse" may appear as an intelligently packaged picture book for little girls who love "horsies"-- but, in actuality, it is a crisp low-impact crash course into the world of these glorious beasts, one that isn't exclusive for the expert or the amateur. This is, of course, not a book for experts with specific questions-- but for the avarage horse enthusiast looking to learn of and see various beautiful breeds. This is a well-organized and wonderfully visual collection of facts and photographs.
