1. This book may be frustrating to some because it is a only a bit in depth on many things. However the total package is an excellent way to begin to cover the many areas that compose good health for horses. There sections are: the body & nutrition (includes herbs), therapies (homeopathy, acupuncture, and acupressure), and massage & stretches. The last section is about half of the book, and even includes tips on how to strengthen your hands for doing massage. It is very pratical, and I especially use the section on effleurage for draining and health of the lymphatic system. (The chart on placement of lymph nodes is the first I've seen anywhere.) The homeopathy section is brief, which I feel is appropriate as other than first aid (covered) and Bach flower remedies (also covered), it is best to seek the advice of an experienced practitioner of veterinary homeopathy. The section on acupuncture includes one of the best brief descriptions I've ever seen. The anatomical explanations are relevant and a couple of the diagrams are especially useful. Again, I feel this book is most useful as an introduction to the many aspects of maintaining the health of our equine partners, and for that I'd rate highly.

1. I do a some scribing at schooling shows, and this book in clear language and a logical presentation covers the things judges have explained about what they are looking for, why things are weighted differently at different levels, what specifics mandate an insufficient (4), what elements do NOT prevent a sufficient (5) score, but what must be present for it to be satisfactory (6). This applies to the nuances between Fairly Good, Good, Very Good and Excellent as well. The definition and explanation of correct execution of the directives and the movements they apply to are themselves a basic education in dressage. He covers schooling exercises for correct development, he covers common riding faults and how they affect the horse and the execution of the test, he covers strategies and techniques for riding the test as well advice for how to approach the whole thing of showing. I thought the book was excellent help not only on showing, or how to maximize the riding of the test itself but also on the training going on at home. A friend told me about the book because it gave the first explanation of a half-halt that truly made sense to her; and I found myself constantly nodding my head as all the bits and pieces I'd been hearing from various judges were right there in a lovely logical, clear structure.



2. We have no idea how differently things look from where the judge sits at "C". Max enlightens us in his books. My scores have gone up significantly with his help. I always start out the show season by rereading them as a "reminder session". Besides, he is the only dressage author whose work is entertaining as well as informative! If you compete, do your self and your horse a favor. Read these books!



3. This book is filled with many, many helpful things even my trainer neglected to tell me about! A must have for anyone who wants to be competitive

1. much of this book was helpful, but i was immediately disappointed when i saw his foal handling techniques. most of them are cruel and unnecessary(sp?), in fact, as between us my mother and i have halter 'broken' two foals, simply by getting their trust and making halters and ropes safe, fun things. in his book he describes twisting ears, twitching, tying to a post in an covered roundyard as a way of halter breaking. although i agree that in an emergency/dangerous situation, twictching a horse may be the only way to save its life, it is not a good training solution or vet aid. definately not a book for the horse LOVER.



2. A very good read. Would have liked more info on tack and tacking up but overall I recommend it.



3. This book was a wonderful source for me to look to for anything I needed to know. It also taught me many things I didn't know but needed to. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about horses!



4. This was one of the best horse books I've read. It thoroughly covers care, tack, riding, history-everything! Although it didn't give step-by-step instructions for everything, it was a complete and satisfying book to read.



5. This book takes the reader through the history of equines, and continues with the modern horse and its needs. Purchasing, grooming, handling, disease and nutrition are a few of the subjects addressed. Excellent color photos and examples.
