1 comments about Foal To Five Years.
- I bought this book hoping to learn something -- I didn't. There is no useful information in this book if you are going to be involved in caring for a mare and her foal.
This is a nice book for absentee owners who want to talk about their mare and foal at cocktail parties. This is a great book for an 8 year old girl who dreams of having a horse and foal of her own (but who never will). This is not an acceptable book for children who will really be around horses -- the pictures show too many examples unsafe practices.

4 comments about Horses and Their Women.
- After completing their two previous books, "Dogs and Their Women" and "Cats and Their Women," authors Cohen and Taylor set out to put together this third compliation. After submitting ads to equine journals requesting that women send in their stories of their experiences with horses, they received over 300 responses. 58 were selected for inclusion in this book.
Each vignette is unique - some are only a few sentences in length, others take up a whole page, and the content of each is as widely varied as the length. Contributors include owners, riders, trainers, children and adults, amateurs and professionals, a mounted police officer, an equine photographer, a Standardbred racehorse driver, a veterinarian, and more. Topics covered range from stories of healing, horses as an escape from and balm for life's problems, a child's first horse, memorials for favorite horses that have passed on, lessons learned from horses, obstacles overcome, goals made and reached, or simply a description of a favorite moment with an equine friend. My two favorite stories were one by a woman whose two horses were stolen and sold for slaughter, and the miraculous way they were rescued and returned to her; and a second by a woman who had adopted a Mustang whose previous owner had abused her, and the journey of trust-building and healing they have gone through. Each vignette is accompanied by a beautiful full-page photograph of the contributor and her horse. The black and white photography gives the book a classic, elegant, timeless feel, and captures each horse and woman in a crisp, beautiful portrait shot. Some of the shots are posed, others candid, and this too adds to the variety of the book. This book is heartwarming, fun, and uplifting - an alternate title could easily be "Chicken Soup for the Horsewoman's Soul." I would highly recommend it to any female horse lover. Buy it for yourself - it's great for either the bedside or the coffee table, or buy it as a nice present for a friend. Or both! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel.
- This is really a very sweet book. It would be a perfect gift for a young girl in her early teens that has been bitten by the horse bug. It has over 100 pages, with a large black and white photo on one side, and an essay on the other. Some of the essays are short, some are boring, and some make you wonder why you bought this book. But then you read the ones that bring tears to your eyes and you know why. This book shows us women and the horses they love, and in their own words they tell us a little about themselves and their horse. It's not a glorious coffee table book like GaWaNi Pony Boy's is, but it is a charming book to read and pass along to other women, or our daughters who share our love of horses.
- Scores of small essays about the special horse(s) in various women's lives. A big black and white photo on one page is complemented by the story right beside it. There are no color photos. Some of the "essays" are only two sentences long! Some of the stories are hilarious, some heartbreaking, some just silly or sappy. Still, there is a genuine love of horses here, and no male-bashing like the title might suggest. If you love horses, real horses, not just fictional or perfect horses, than display this book proudly on your shelf
- This is the kind of book that makes you wish you could have someone else drop the kids off at soccer and ballet lessons so you had time to slip into your jeans and head out to the stable. Lots
of photos and stories of girls and women alike who have accomplished that dream. By Claire

5 comments about Album of horses.
- I had owned this book when I was a kid. I loved it because it gave you so much information about the different breeds of horses and the pictures were wonderful for me to look at back then. I bought this book because I don't know what happened to the original and it made me sad. Out of nostalgia for the past experience I had when I had the book as a kid, as an adult, I wanted the book back. I was so thankful that it was possible to even get a copy because I know it is an older book. Even though the reading is not geared for an adult I still find the book heart-warming to own.
- When I bought this book, it looked pretty good and since it had more than a hundred pages, i thought i would enjoy it but i didnt.
This book starts of with a story of a horse, then goes into some boring history. You dont get very many good facts from this book, so if you are looking for a book that has a lot of facts about horses in it, dont buy this one!
- I haven't read the new edition, but I have an old, 1960s hardcover from an antique store and it is beautiful! Henry's breed descriptions turn the history of a horse into a captivating story. Best of all, it is all factual! Dennis's amazing horse pictures illuminate the book and give it a charming touch. Being a devoted Appie lover and owner, I was particularly fond of the chapter on the Appaloosa! All the stories and accompanying artwork peices are spectacular, though, and it is my opinion that every junior rider worth her salt should have a copy of this book on their shelf.
- This Book has alot of information to all kinds of breeds. The illustrator, however drawes really realistic pictures!I really like the book cause I learn alot from it,and the pictures are soooo beautiful!!Horse lovers will totally love it!!!The font is quite big,so your eyes don't hurt while reading.Over all, this is a good book and I highly recommened it.Thanks for reading my review, and hope you enjoy the book!!(If you have it.)
- This is one of Henry's best horse books due to its incredible combination of facts and breathtaking paintings. Many of the top classical breeds of the world are showcased in this one-of-a-kind book. An excellent gift choice for any horse lover, young or old.

- There isn't much that can be added to the first two reviews except to note that this book contains a rare display of sidesaddle. As a sidesaddle enthusiast I am always looking for any instance of promotion or documentation of this discipline. Leafing through this book, you will find a chapter which begins with a picture of an elementary school-aged child in a white lace-trimmed burgundy dress. Your first thought will be that it must be some kind of special occasion, but you will then notice that there is no stirrup nor rider's leg on the off side. Further in the chapter Demari catches the entire group riding. These little girls are all evenly matched in their frilly dresses, travelling at a high rate of speed, perfectly balanced, and completely comfortable in their sidesaddles. How I wish I had grown up like this!

This book is a horse lover's dream, especially if you are a horse crazy girl like I was. Laura Chester's exceptional prose melds gloriously with Donna DeMari's breathtaking photography of horses and the girls who ride them. As an added bonus, Chester included quotes from poets and writers who revere horses. I was pleased to find excerpts from favorite books and writers of my horse-loving youth -- Marguerite Henry, James Herriot, Anna Sewell -- and poetic paeans by Lyn Lifshin and Ted Hughes, to name only a few.
This excerpt from "My Life With Horses" by Chester sets the book's tone ideally:
"We loped through the fields, our pajama pants blowing. With moonlight tipped on the horse's manes and our blonde hair, we were ghost riders, flashing primeval, almost weightless on our invisible saddles. It seemed mysteriously right to be riding, forbidden, and the horses too were casting their spells."
"Yearlings in the Pasture" by Lyn Lifshin captures the spirit and joy of horses, and why humans love them:
no responsibility, just play
in the grass in a rose wind,
a butterfly wind. Before
harnesses, before shoes....
There are too many fine stories and poems in this book to cover in a review. And unfortunately, I can't reproduce the photographs that accompany each poem and story. DeMari's work is sensual perfection, memorializing both horse and rider. My compliments to Chester and DeMari. The result of their collaboration is delightful and beautiful. I enthusiastically recommend this book for readers of all ages.
- Compiled and co-edited by Laura Chester and Donna DeMari, "Heartbeat For Horses" is a compilation of impressive photographs combined engaging commentaries about girls and horses. The quotations and commentaries are drawn from forty-two writers that range from Chief Buffalo Cjhild Long Lance, to E. E. Cummings, to Charles Dickens, to James Herriot, to D.H. Lawrence, to Theodore Roosevelt. A very special blending of image and text, "Heartbeat For Horses" is particularly recommended reading for equine enthusiasts in general, any girl or woman who feels a special affection for the horse in particular.

3 comments about Equine Locomotion.
- As an "engineer turned farrier" I find this book to be a valuable reference. However, I'm not sure that someone lacking a background in physics would be able to understand the information. The contents are very technical and you might find your "left brain" working overtime to obsorb the data. IT AIN'T LIGHT READIN' FOR SURE, but Newton and Archimedes would love this book!!!
There is also a "dummed down" version of this book available. For folks who get a headache trying to understand vector mechanics and angular momentum try The Dynamic Horse A Biomechanical Guide to Equine Movement and Performance instead.
- This book provides a number of scholarly articles that are both comprehensive and thorough in regards to their subject. However, if you are interested in just learning more about how your horse moves or gait abnormalities and their causes, you are better off getting a book on your breed's conformation or a book on lameness. The information is academic in nature- if you are an academic I'm sure it is a terrific book. However, even for interested, experienced, and capable horse owners, this book has very little useful day to day information.
- This extensive treatment of the science of movement of horses is destined to serve as an important reference work for decades to come. Essential for the serious scholar of horse gaits and performance.
