3 comments about Manual of Equine Reproduction.
- I purchased this book to become reacquainted with equine reproduction after spending a year in equine practice without reproduction. The text was direct, succinct, and well-versed without extra details that come with other in-depth textbooks. There are many pictures and diagrams, though I would have preferred to see more present. Overall, I feel that the Manual is a great refresher course for veterinarians and equine reproduction specialists. However, I would not recommend this book as the sole text while learning equine reproduction for the first time.
- This book is for the very advanced. It uses all medical terminology and is very basic with details. They assume it is for vet students. There is no glossary and there are highlighted words that they never explain. It is pure awful!!!!
- This book covers every aspect of equine reproduction from the preperation of a stallion prior to the start of the breeding season all the way through to the care and management of the mare and foal post partum. This book covers in absolute detail, the step by step format of every situation that would or could occur during the 15 to 18 month period that leads from conception to post foaling management. This is a book that every farm manager as well as the weekend horse breeder should have access to 24 hours a day.

5 comments about Horses Are Made to Be Horses.
- This book was a joy to read, and explains carefully why horses behave the way they do. Should be required reading for anyone before they buy a horse. Gives one a deeper appreciation and understanding into the mind of the horse. All horses are neighing their thanks to Mr. Mairinger.
- Although the writing style and the frequent repetition in the text sometimes distracted from getting the point that was being made, the advice and lessons within the book are well worth digging for. I found the last few chapters had the most to offer with the last couple lines of the book really summing it up.
- This book wonderfully led you into the mind of a horse. It was very well written. The only reason that I rated it 4 stars intsead of five was because I did not fully agree with everything said. That is ok, it was only my opinion. This book shows you how to reconsider everything you do on a horses back, near a horse or around a horse. It does no tell you how to do something or what it might feel like, but it tells you how to get there. I loved it. Any person that is even a little interested in Horses and would like to know more, I urge you to read this book.
- Unfortunately this book seems to be more of a gratitude to Mr Mairinger by the author than a dressage tutorial as one might have expected. There are too many analogies used (50 pages out of 170) to emphasize the basic and most important fact of horsemanship; "feeling of your horse" Focus on different effects and transitions is not covered thoroughly and well enough.
- This book should be read by anyone who wants to ride a horse, whether they are interested in dressage or not. Mairinger does an excellent job of making the rider understand and respect these beautiful animals.

2 comments about The Essentials of Horsemanship: Training, Riding, Care and Management (Howell Equestrian Library).
- This is a big book, not an ordinary size book, and it is really fun to prop on your knees and read. It is so well-written. The woman is English but it is obvious she really cares about her horses. She has photos of all the different things she tells you to do as far as your horse's care is concerned. Most of the things are the same in England and in the States except that I don't know what a 'manege' is. But it's an excellent book and well worth the price.
- This book is comprised of all levels of information about the horse and horseback riding. It touches on all forms of the sport: Huntseat, cross country, dressage, trail riding, ect. It contains information regarding lungeing, riding in the manage, horse purchasing, health and general care, and all the other basics that you need to know. Beautiful photographs and large beautiful binding adorn this book, making it very good as a horseman's coffee table book, as well as an informative addition to his/her library. NOTE: It appears this book has eithet been translated or written in Great Britain. Some of the vocabulary isn't standard American English, but should be pretty self explanitary. I rather enjoyed this book because I purchased it prior to taking any lessons on horseback. It gave me a pretty good idea of what to expect and how I should be progressing over time. This book does give considerable attention to jumping, but primarily takes a dressage-type approach. I recommend it to anyone who is learning or just plain enjoys English riding!

3 comments about All the Kings' Horses.
- Mary King's equestrian eventing career has garnered four team gold medals at World and European Championships and the title of British Champion a record four times. She has also represented Britain at the last three Olympic Games. This book was published in 1997, and so the Sidney and Athens Olympic Games are not included.
This is a very frank look at the world of one-day and three-day eventing, a great book for horse-crazy teens as Mary King had to earn the right to participate. Her parents did not buy her way in. She began her career on the local vicar's pony, and then served as another rider's 'head horse girl,' shoveling her way to an eventing career, as it were.
The initial chapter after the introduction, "The Early Horses," is actually very depressing as all of Mary King's early eventing horses had to be put down because of navicular disease or tendon problems. I almost stopped reading.
The rider had her share of injuries, too, including a concussion and a broken neck (2001). She also took several spills while she was pregnant with her daughter Emily, but luckily nothing came of them. Mary King is one dedicated rider!
Her head horse girl, Annie Collings, also participated in the writing of this book and it is almost exclusively about the horses that made Mary King's equestrian triumphs possible. The 'stable notes' text boxes list the horses' 'personal details' ("16.3hh bay gelding, with big distinctive blaze"), 'main achievements' ("Team gold European Championships 1991"), 'characteristics' ("Tall, dark and handsome; sensitive and a real gentleman"), 'likes' ("rubbing his head, usually on Annie"), and 'dislikes' ("men; staying away from home; cows; big dogs").
There are lots of color photographs of Mary, Annie, and the horses, one of my favorites being of Apple rolling around in his stall shavings with a big, horsey grin on his mug.
Note: King Solomon III, who is described in this book as Mary's up-and-coming even horse actually took her to the 2003 European Championships (they came in fifth). You can check out this rider's continuing career at: www.olympics.org.uk/teamgb/biogs_athens.asp?AthleteID=549.
- This book has been a pleasure to read. I may be a bit bias as Mary is my Sister, but all in all the book captures the fun and entheusiasm Mary releases to everyone she meets.
- This is a delightfull book about the good and bad times of Mary King and her horses. It is written from the heart and you will laugh and cry. Annie's views and stories are wonderfull. She deserves, and gets, alot of credit for being a top groom. A must read for any eventer.

1 comments about Feet and Shoes (Threshold Picture Guides Series).
- We bought this book and our Farrier wanted it to use for youth demonstrations and to easier show owners what and why he is doing to their horses feet. Makes his life easier and they finally 'get' it. :)
