2 comments about The Right Track: Arena Exercises for Riders and Instructors.
- I received this book pretty quickly. I like the analogies it uses in regards to riding circles and serpentines. Since my background is hunter/jumper and I instruct in this discipline. It gives me the tools to better explain to my students in laments terms of how to ride the pattern.
- This is a book for the youngsters. A book of arena movements. It is written with names on the arena movements that a child may remember - e.g. the "snowman". If you are serious about your riding, it would be less confusing to learn the correct terms for the movements. It is just as easy for children to learn the correct names in the first place. I purchased this book, but sold it on due to not being able to tolerate the silly names. Old habits die hard.

3 comments about The Essentials of Horsekeeping.
- Since I bought my horse a couple of months ago, I have read nearly a dozen horse care manuals. This is the best of the lot. Why? It presents the basic material that a beginner needs, but it gives more detail than most. A few examples: Many books note that the horse owner should watch for poisonous plants in the pasture, and they list those plants. This book offers full color pictures of each plant, which is that much more helpful. Likewise, the chapter on equine health care gives more information than the other manuals I've read, but not so much that it rivals a veterinary volume. I wish someone had told me about this book before I bought my horse, but I'm certainly glad to have it now!
- This book contains everything you need to know for the care and well-being of your horse. Including feed, grooming, saddle, tack and stable. Understanding your horse's health and how to maintain it. A classic!
- As I stated in a previous rating. The seller did not provide a 1st class new book. the book had to be a reject from the publisher. Blank page fillers were chafed and scuffed, The last page of the index was missing, and the last page shown was glued to the inside cover. In short the book sold as new was a publisher's reject and should have been discarded.

- Excellent book - see other people's reviews. I just wanted to let people know that I just heard that a revised edition on this book is being worked on. Don't know when it will be released though.
- I can't say enough about this book. These days we are bombarded with these ads for supplements the manufacturers insist our horses must have! But we can cause real problems if we don't know what we are doing. Too much of this? Not enough that? We can cause serious damage. This book will tell you exactly what your horse needs by taking in all kinds of factors such as how much work he does, where he lives, etc.
Easy to read, easy to understand. Buy this book!
- This is the best book I have ever read on the subject of nutrition for horses. With all of the charts on every vitamin and mineral needed for equine's, it is very easy to understand for the lay-person. This book goes into great detail on precise amounts needed for each type of discipline and what you may need to add or subtract to "balance" your horses diet. I would strongly recomend this book for any and every horse owner's library.

2 comments about Not Quite a Horsewoman.
- Unconventional horse book that tells the real story of a life filled with equine-mania. It's a collection of columns by an English writer and novelist about the foibles of such things as hunting, driving, horse maintenanc, showing, balancing family life with one's horse love and more. Unless you're a natural born rider and even then, it will make you smile and even howl in places. Tells it like it is.
- This book is a witty collection of disasters that any one who has ever worked with horses will relate to - short chapters about different events make it easy to pick up and read in a spare moment. It is a well-written account of the author's life in the saddle, full of laughs and incidences that will have happened to many riders. Humorous pictures decorate the pages.
A good read for any one cursed (like myself) to ride whatever the weather, whatever the cost and whatever the consequences.

- Another excellent book by Maxwell. Probably need to have read his previous book or be familiar with his technique as this is a very succinct but beautifully organized effort.

- This is a great book. Ms. Martha's information stays consistant even today. This book is old & out of print, but I was able to get a copy & am glad I did! If you can't find this book, try her new Running to Win book and it will have a lot of the same information.

1 comments about AZ of Horse Behavior & Training.
- This book has a short 20 page introduction to horse behavior and language, and from there it continues in encyclopedia style, with lots of horse related items described in alphabetical order. Usually I don't like this type of book at all and avoid it, but this one was an exception. First, it is down to the point, no word is wasted! Yet it is very easy to read and understand. The other thing I liked very much is WHAT it says is very horsefriendly ("natural horsemanship" oriented), sounds very sensible and logical. There is a wealth of information for a very broad range of horse topics.
Of course, due to the nature (i.e. the form) of the book no one subject is treated very extensively. This means it is good only to get an overview over horsemanship related topics - but at this it is REALLY good!

2 comments about To Handmake a Saddle.
- From the saddlemaker's perspective, this book omits more than it includes. Saddlemaking is a very visual art form, and this book barely includes enough B & W photos to give the reader more than a skimpy overview of how a traditional saddle is made. It is DEFINATELY not a how-to book on making a saddle despite its title. Considering there are literally hunderds of saddle tree styles, the small scale "patterns" in the book are of no use. The style saddle shown in the book is not a style saddle that one would find in today's American riding arena, thus dating the book's photos three or four decades previous to its publication date. If the casual observer wants to look at a few pictures of some of the insides of an older style English saddle, then this booklet may serve as a five minute browse.
- The author describes all the basic steps of constructing an English saddle, but this is not a saddle making instruction manual, it's more of a detailed overview.. The author skips over many steps that a saddler would consider "obvious", therefore at least an existing intermediate knowledge of english saddle construction is required to make best use of this reference.
