3 comments about Lucien's Story: A Memoir.

  1. A memoir -- A gateway into the world of Lucien leads the reader through the tunnels of his mind as the horrors of the past ricochet into the present. Without sentimentality this story changes the awareness of even the most knowledgeable reader. The presnt is honed by these echoes of the past. Beautifully, albeit adroitly, written, the bones of this experience are clean, sparse and strong. We are helped to understand the unimaginable

  3. This is the story of Lucien Duckstein, an 11 year old boy in Paris who is deported to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp with his mother because they are Jewish. It is also the story of Lucien Duckstein, a sixty year old scientist who eventually comes to deal with the experiences he underwent in Bergen-Belsen and the Drancy internment camp. He explores the price those childhood experiences exacted in his adulthood, especially in his dealings with his wife, children, family and the outside world. He acknowledges the cost of having created a persona which could survive life in the camps. His language is sparse, but eloquent and his pain is evident in the simplicity of his words. This is a short (60page), volume that is uncluttered by the irrelevant, that flows from the start and is stark and frightening in it's descriptions of what it was like to be a French Jew in Paris and later. His use of the present to play off against the past merely highlights the horrors that he experience

  1. This is a difficult, complex story to bring to radio, but Dave Arnold (my personal hero) does it with poise and panache. A new generation can now experience this heartbreaking and uplifting presentation of a fearless woman who stood up to the Nazis. You will not regret the purchase.

  2. I was amazed at the believability this audio had! The sounds create images in your mind that make you feel as though you are almost watching it happen. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the story is not complete. I understand that introducing too many characters would be confusing. They used nephew Peter for many more roles than he had in the real story of the Ten Booms. But this slight change does not change the story line at all. I am now reading the book while I wait for my tapes to come back from a dear friend, it is hard to wait!

1 comments about The Splice of Moments: Autobiography.

  1. Rarely does one get such a heartwarming and intimate look into the life and musings of such a fascinating man. This biography takes you from the tears of a great grandmother losing her family to America to The Second World War in China. It includes correspondence between engineers and love poems to one's wife. The subject matter is diverse and poignant. It's form is unique but highly readable and thought provoking. In many ways, it is reminiscent of Joyce's Ulysses and Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. This is more than a book. It is a journey.

  1. Gilbert Michlin is a distant relative. This book sheds added information for my family history. Most interesting is the mention of my Uncle by name who helped Gilbert along his way.

  2. While the author is clearly not a writer by profession, this book is very readable and moving. Even more important is the information given about a dreadful period in human history.

5 comments about Senzi: A Woman to Remember.

  1. In this simple and affectingly told memoir, a young World War II American prisoner of war develops a subtle and complex relationship with an older German woman, at whose farm he is held as a laborer. Looking back on the experience from the perspective of over 50 years, Jagoda discovers meanings he could only sense at the time. A moving and unusual drama of two people discovering -- and supporting -- each other in spite of the demands of their wartime roles and differences of their life experiences.

  2. Bob Jagoda is a gifted writer whose memoir portrays in fascinating style the life of an American POW. Jagoda has a superb ear for the spoken language, and a facility with the written word that make this book a must-read. My wife and I loved this book!

  3. Senzi is certainly a woman to remember. A true story that puts the usual POW memoir to shame. Fascinating and hopeful.

  4. I thought I knew what war was all about, until I read Senzi: A Woman to Remember. The book, in addition to being dramatic and humorous, exposes that great layer of humanity that draws even enemies together at the level where it counts. This book is a must for anyone interested in real people.
