2 comments about Modernism.
- This is a superlative tour of Modern Architecture and Design through the 20th century. Weston, who has put together some beautiful books on Aalto, Utzon and the Modern House has really outdone himself in this remarkable book. He looks at the overlapping patterns in art and architecture and how they came together to form a movement that overtook the hand-me-down styles of the past.
Appropriately enough he begins with "Roots," a survey of 19th century precedents in Modern Architecture with the focus on the English Arts and Crafts Movement and how it spread throughout Europe and to America, influencing the Vienna Secessionists, the Deutscher Werkbund and Wright's Prairie School. From there he charts the development of a new style in "The Tradition of the New," influenced heavily by painterly movements such as Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism. A new abstraction was born that inspired such architectural movements as Futurism, de Stijl and the Bauhaus, which he develops further in "Formulating the Future." He treats the Russian avant-garde separately in "Russia: The Art of Revolution," which gave modern art and architecture a revolutionary fervor and would eventually serve as the basis of the Deconstructivist camp that arose in the 1980's. He then covers the growth of the modern movement in "The International Style," effectively taking the movement up to WWII. He closes with a summary of post-war attitudes in "Triumph, Transformation and Rejection," which saw the fulfillment and eventual disillusionment of modernist ideals. The book is handsomely illustrated and provides one of the best attempts to interweave art and architecture and its influences on commercial and industrial design. It is a must for anyone looking to gain a better understanding of the impact of Modernism on comtemporary society, illustrating how Modernism shaped so many of the current patterns in design. The narrative flows gracefully, offering a compelling overview of the movement.
- We used this book for an art history course at Yale University, on art, architecture, and design from 1890 to 1940. The book is great! Usually I find the survey sort of book - covering something so wide and expansive as MODERNISM - to get bogged down in cliches or neat little epigrams for quick consumption, but there's no cursory cute treatment here. Weston covers a lot - he's great on explaining theories and movements of design etc but also gives appropriate history, politics, and culture. And that's good, because I like to know what Ezra Pound is thinking about modernism, as it happens. It takes you through time and space nicely - painting, architecture, advertisement, furniture, etc - and you don't feel as if you missed out on anything. Plus the illustrations/photographs are beautiful - I spent so much time just in love with the book for that. Not only is it helpful, but the writing is clear and intelligent, sometimes funny, and irreverent if necesssary.

1 comments about Dore's Illustrations for Don Quixote.
- Gustave Doré was a frustrated painter. Forced by circumstance to produce illustration illustrations for a number of literary works, he primarily longed for fame and success as a painter. But while shooting for fame as a painter, he inadvertently achieved immortality as arguably the greatest illustrator in history.
Most illustrators of the classics fall far short of the efforts of the works they are asked to illustrate, but Doré almost always managed to eerily echo visually the genius of the original authors. After reading the first half of DON QUIXOTE, I discovered this Dover collection of Doré's illustrations of the work, and I found them to be completely stunning. Doré had a genius for precisely visualizing events in the novel and transferring them precisely into his illustrations. No scene is too much of a challenge to him. The famous moment when Don Quixote attacks the windmills, mistaking them as giants, is depicted brilliantly by Doré. Every famous scene and many less famous scenes are all depicted, and I can honestly say that not once does Doré disappoint me in his imaging of how the scene occurred. One can, if one wants, make minor quibbles with Doré, such as his drawing Quixote wearing the wash basin helmet even in section later in the novel where he is said to have worn a sallet helmet. But this truly would be mere quibbling, for throughout Doré perfectly captures the spirit of DON QUIXOTE. I'm convinced that this collection of illustrations is not nearly as well known as it deserves to be. Graphic novels are an extremely popular genre today, and it is impossible to imagine anyone interested in the visual aspects of those stories not being fascinated by Doré's far more complex and classically organized illustrations. Likewise, no one interested in graphic art or the history of art could not find these less than riveting. Most of all, anyone who loves DON QUIXOTE will adore these drawings, and to work through the various illustrations is to relive all the glorious events of the novel once again. Indeed, one could almost argue that while other translators have managed with more or less success to translate Cervantes's masterpiece into English or German or French, Doré managed to translate the novel into a purely visual language.

5 comments about Manners.
- I enjoy many manners books and found Spade's book was an appropriate reminder of all the things one should keep in mind. I found it entertaining and appropriate--quick but not overbearing. Certainly, for a more extended and formal approach to manners there is Judith Martin or Emily Post, but this is a great way to revisit those things we need to know.
- Living in times of constant change it was so refreshing to read a book on manner's. As a world we have become very pushy and fast paced which has lead to good manner's being left behind.
It is a light read with some comic relief thrown in. An excellent coffee table book to just pick up and browse through for some tips.
Many visitors have come to my house and the book has caused some healthy discussion. (even from young people!)
A book that should be left laying around in the hope that we could revive some good manners back into our fast paced world.
- I thought this book was going to have lots of advice for manners but a lot of the stuff was actually pretty obvious to most normal people. I was disappointed with what I paid for the book.
- This is a cute book, but lacking in substance. Like her other books in this series, it's layout is like a magazine- with watercolor illustrations, quotes and short paragraphs interspersed through out the pages. The advice Kate gives is not bad- it's just that you can get this information, and in greater detail from Emily Post's book. Kate does give some modern advice for cell phones and re-gifting, but nothing you have not heard already. It was an entertaining one-time read that you can finish in about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Check it out at your library instead of buying a copy though.
- This book does include some helpful information, but at times I found it boring. If you really liked the other two books in this series you probably would like this one as well.

5 comments about An Eames Primer.
- Before reading this book I would have found it difficult to believe that I would be able to use the word hyperbole and the Eames Office in the same sentence. The work of the Eames Office remains beyond reproach and this book does offer some genuine insight into its multifaceted work but tends to avoid difficult questions and for the most part gives simple answers.
The book glosses over the realities and complexities of the Eamesian approach to design and the creative atmosphere of the Office. However, I think the title itself makes the authors intent clear. As a "primer" this book fits the bill in terms of the information included. My main criticism is that the author should have followed through and been more concise and direct. This book is verbose and practically glows with the repetitive and nearly-universal fond memories of the individuals interviewed. Worst of all, the prose has the faint sent of re-contextualization and hero worship (hard to avoid for a grandson).
Secondary to the above but still significant is the books poor quality of design and production. I found the book extremely difficult to read. The font and point size selected, compounded by the overly-wide text line length, made for uncomfortable reading. To top it off the paper selected displayed a surface glare that made reading the book all but impossible except in the best light conditions. The design renders it more a pretty-object rather than a functional book. On the other hand it looks good on the shelf... if you want to impress your friends.
If it weren't for the fact that this book is really about as good as any other design book, it would fair far worse. If you couldn't tell, I would recommend getting the book as there is not much out there on the subject thats any better.
- I have had the pleasure of visiting the Eames House and the Eames Family (incldg Eames Demetrios--author and grand-son and Lucia --Charles's only child) on the occasion of the Charles's 100th birthday anniversary. What a delight! Before that wonderful trip, I had the benefit of reading this book which helped me fully understand the history and legacy of this important creative team and the family life that influenced them
It's a must have for any mid century devotee. Get it for your library and be inspired!
- This is a great insight into the lives of the Eames'. I think many designers (myself included) think we know something of their lives and importance. This book is a true eye opener into their influence around the world. There is so much to learn not just from their work, but HOW they lived their lives. Very well written. A must read for any designer.
- As you might imagine and the title implies this is a wonderful introduction to the work of the Eames' design office. More importantly it is a warm fun filled story of two wonderful and creative human beings who truly sought to make a difference in the world by living with integrity. I feel they succeeded and I think that anyone who reads this little gem will begin to see the connections that weave all life's little mysteries into a comprehensive story .
- In 1988, filmmaker Eames Demetrios made the film, 901: After 45 Years of Working, a family record of the closing of the Eames Office shortly after the death of Ray. It was an objective attempt to capture the essence of the studio and design work created by Charles and Ray Eames and their multi-talented staff. Now more than ten years later, Demetrios has again recorded the studio and work in the book, An Eames Primer. The modest title implies an introduction and starting point to all the work of his grandparents but it is much more informative. What makes this book essential reading is the personal nature of the writing, connections, and the concept of "design addressing itself to the need."
Much of this personal nature is expressed in the chapter on the life of Charles Eames and Ray Kaiser before their meeting at Cranbrook, including extensive writing on each family history. This early period of their lives is illustrated by several drawings and paintings by Charles and Ray with each piece exhibiting a pleasing combination of color and form that would later become the hallmark of their work. Demetrios devotes two pages on the issue of the Eameses signing with either Knoll or Herman Miller for the plywood group. This analysis, which isn't really dealt with in other books, is a rational and logical explanation of Charles and Ray's principles and their main concern about simply marketing a "good chair". For anyone interested in this crucial choice the author has formulated an essential case for the decision to go with Herman Miller. One of the many highlights of the book is a wonderful collection of color photographs of different objects hanging from the ceiling of the Eames House that is pure aesthetic delight. Also, the bottom right corner of each page serves as a flipbook tour of the expansive 901 Studio. What must have been an amazing event in film exhibition is Glimpses of the USA at the American Pavilion in Moscow in 1959. The seven-screen presentation of life in the United States shows a cultural identity of amazing diversity and Demetrios explains the process behind the production of this film. In an unbelievable set of circumstances, the American government had given Charles and Ray complete freedom to produce this film at the height of the Cold War with no "final cut" approval from Washington. Several pages also describe the production of the two versions of Powers of Ten. These films required experiments in film technology and camera work and Demetrios fully describes the process. The many contributions of staff members and outside consultants are thoroughly explained. Throughout the book, many former Eames Office members and consultants describe their experience of working in the studio on the amazing variety of projects. Issues of design attribution are commented upon and examined for several projects. Two days after finishing the book I retrieved Eames Design and several other excellent books and realized that everything now seemed much clearer after reading Primer. Perhaps Demetrios is correct in giving his work that modest title. The clean and clear connection has been analyzed and described so that it all seems so perfectly obvious. This is an informative educational book written in a casual but serious style and a worthy addition to a personal library.

5 comments about Absolut Book.: The Absolut Vodka Advertising Story.
- I love Absolut ad's and have always wanted to get one. They are expensive new , so I got an used copy from an amazon seller. It came quickly and I flipped through the book for about 20 min when it arrived 2 days later. I love all the ads and they are all so clever. I might not get some of the modern art ones, but I love the city ones in particular. Anyway, I got this book for my new house and new coffee table book, I think it is one of the best hardcover coffee table book (marketing story book) ever.
- If you like the Absolut ads, this is a good book for you. It's what you'd expect - big pictures of the Absolut ads with explanations from the ad agency guys who made it happen. A fun coffeetable book.
- Compulsory addition to the coffee table library. An excellent example of a clever, consistent, cutting edge branding campaign helping to position a generic product at the top of consumer mind. Absolut genius.
- Absolut is one of the best selling vodkas in the world and the advertsing for it is second to none. In this fabulous book were are told the inside story behind the marketing and selling of this tasty treat. The paper is first grade and the pictures are outstanding to say the least. Absolut original with a bottle looking like a Roman ruin is probably my favorite one but there are so many nice advertising ideas that have become stupendous posters. Absolute Enivironment is also a nice one. This is a good coffee table book and a nice gift for the person that likes vodka and to read.
- This is a wonderful, informative, and beautiful book.
This book is about the Absolut Vodka advertising campaign. How it began, and what it is about. There are many beautiful, and breath taking images which makes you see the entire light of the campaign which looks so simple from the outside. Now, you get the inside looks and it isn't simple at all but an amazing experience. WOW!!

5 comments about The Simpsons Handbook: Secret Tips from the Pros (Simpsons (Harper)).
- I got this as a gift. It has great coverage of a whole lot of the popular characters. Also has step by step drawings for many of the favorites. If you know someone who is into drawing, and enjoys the Simpsons, it is highly recommended.
- My husband and I grew up watching the Simpsons, so when this book came out my husband was very interested in it. I got it for Christmas for him. He was very happy to see how many characters they show you how to draw, and how detailed the pictures are.
This is very good buy for a Simpsons fan, or someone interested in learning to draw.
- Very well written and illustrated, Very easy to follow the instructions and get first class results. I bought it as a gift for my eight year old nephew and now he's ready to start illustrating for the TV show ... well not quite But he's enjoying it. Five Star Product
- Great book. So much fun for the weekend drawer. Could have more information/fun facts. But still, great book.
- This is a really good book! If you love the art of The Simpsons, ever wondered how they are made? This book is for you. It is that very well made that it even seems easy to draw them!

2 comments about 1000 New Designs and Where to Find Them: A 21st-Century Sourcebook.
- This book is excellent if you are interested in Interior or product design this is perfect.
Great photographs and some information on the products, the best part that it gives you the websites for each item (1000) so you can use this as a great reference.
- It compiles a good variety of products in a glossy book that you can do nothing but adore. Not only it is a good source book, it is enjoyable. By no means it is complete, and it wasn't meant to be. You could use it as a source for inspiration, an indicator for near future trend, and if you are financially resourceful, a buying guide!
Have it, browse it and enjoy !

5 comments about The Practical Guide To Patternmaking For Fashion Designers: Menswear.
- Detailed, yet understandable text describes design of men's fashion from making sloper to final pattern-making. Describes use of pattern-making tools.
Spiral binding has held up so far under hard use.
- In the very first chapters a lot of useful information is presented, and a the reader is given a good insight on the fashion industry and the role of patternmaking. Then you're given a list of tools you'll need to begin your own patternmaking and from there on out you should be set with this book as your guide. I've also purchased the women's book and it looks like it will be just as helpful, but one thing at a time...
- I have been trying to find a decent book that deals solely with menswear pattern design and I found it with this book. Many others I have from before were very difficult to use as the instructions were very minimal if any at all at times. This manual has excellent illustrations & instructions to make someone who may have never taken a course a good understanding in how to manipulate a men's pattern or create one with an easier understanding.
- A serious text book type for aspiring designers. I bought this book simply to make clothes for myself as there is not much out there for men. 99.9% commercial patterns are for women and the 0.1% patterns for men are 80's redux with batwing sleeves and over sized shoulders. So far, I have used the book to make a block pattern for my own body. It's quite easy if you put your mind to it and reread the instructions. I must admit that this book is not suitable for amateurs. Having learned to sew from my mother since I was a preschooler must've helped me understand the term and techniques better as I did not go to fashion school. I am hoping to be the next Ennio Capasa (Costume National) someday, who knows?
- I bought this book by virtue it was for menswear. I am a theatrical tailor and normally drape suits, and use commercial patterns as slopers. At university, I had trouble with flat patterning.
This book has altered my opinion of flatpattern work. I love it. I recommend it. The instructions are pretty clear; there were only one or two places that I really had to reread, and look more closely at the illustrations. Great, great book.

2 comments about Creating Concrete Art Furniture.
- excellent book, takes you step by step (with plenty of pictures) all the way through one project, from conception through final finishes. explains all tools, materials and processes. got one for myself and another for a gift.
- I ordered this book because I've become interested in the process of sculpting with concrete. There is so little information out there! I read this two times, from cover to cover, in one sitting. I currently sculpt with metal, so this book just helped everything fall into place. By watching a project unfold, I was given insight into timing projects, possible disasters, and the vast potential of this medium. This was money well spent, and I can't wait to get into the studio and start playing.
