1 comments about Rauschenberg: Art and Life.

  1. 'Notes to accompany an exhibition' would be a fitting title for this book for those who are unaware of Mary Lynn Kotz' revised/updated biography of Robert Rauschenberg as they currently enjoy the spectacular traveling exhibition of his works, COMBINES, currently filling the generous spaces of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Though the accompanying exhibition catalogue/book COMBINES, also available through Amazon.com, touches on many aspects of Rauschenberg's life, Kotz is a bit more conversational and adds to the art history aspect of the painter's life by a broader survey of his output.

Rauschenberg is about as American as they come, being born in Texas to a conservative family, destined for a career in the ministry but instead electing to flee the home and settle in New York where his more bohemian aspects blossomed into the important art figure he has become. His life has been enriched by alliances with Jasper Johns and Merce Cunningham, by struggle with some addictions, a bumpy personal life, but he has always been a warm, friendly, rather selfless artist who was unafraid to create art that reflects his life and times.

Some of the more helpful information Kotz delivers concerns Rauschenberg's idiosyncratic art techniques, creative modes in painting, photography, collage, construction, print making, and contributions to the theater (not only with sets designed for ballets, but incorporating poetry and media in a poignant manner into his sculptural works). Rauschenberg the Humanitarian also emerges as an icon for other artists to emulate in his serious work with global communication within the arts as a manner of inviting meaningful international conversation.

The book contains a generous number of full color plates of his art and his conceptual stages. The broad aspect of the works Kotz elects to include is very much in her favor as a biographer. For those who wish to understand the man behind the extraordinary art that is traveling the country, add this fine volume to the library. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 06

4 comments about Spectrum 2: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art.

  1. The only one I missed (because of moving to the Netherlands). Happy to see a reprint finally of this book. The series is complete now (until next issue arrives of course). Every annual has been worth it and this one's no exception, even after 12 years!

  2. This book with it's supurb collection of fantastic art comes to us reprinted from the 1995 edition of the same name. Here are 200 plus color illustrations from that era and cover the range from magazine covers, book dust jackets, or in many cases the book itself. Here are art works to illustrate stories or advertisements.

Spectrum 2 has been long out of print, after all, Spectrum 13 should be in your book store soon, and Spectrum 14's entry forms are now available. Each issue of the annual tends to go out of print fairly quickly, and I suspect this reprint will also. If interested, I suggest ordering your copy fairly quickly.

The mission of the organization is 'To promote the fantastic arts and provide an annual showcase for contemporary artists.' They have done a supurb job, not only with the annuals, but with museum exhibits and exhibits at shows around the country.

  3. I have collected all but 1 of this great series and would have to say that this was probably my least favourite. My main issue is the lay out, with the size of a lot of the pictures being too small with lots of white space around them. I suppose it was only the second one in the series and they rectified this in later versions.

That said, it still have some great art in it and I would recommend it to anyone interested in sci-fi art

  4. Over 134 pages of full color glossy fantasy and sci fi artwork. The same high quality selection as the other spectrum series books. Has a digital work of "death" (Neil Gaiman's story character) and many popular book cover artists throughout.

3 comments about How to Write and Illustrate a Scientific Paper (How to Write & Illustrate a Scientific Paper).

  1. As a graduate student entering a scientific field with a liberal arts degree, I have found this book to be a very helpful, straightforward and enjoyable introduction to scientific writing. I appreciated consulting it for guidance on designing tables and writing up the methods and results sections for my master's capstone project. The chapters are well organized and effectively cover a lot of material; they are very easy to quickly scan and find a useful piece of advice on a particular topic. This book has also made me a more critical reader of the literature. As astounding number of published peer-reviewed papers fail follow the most basic rules; confusing language and poorly constructed tables not only frustrate the reader but may also prevent the communication of potentially important results. This is a must-read for anybody who wants to clearly and efficiently convey scientific information. Highly recommended!

  2. I have been dipping into this concise and witty book as I write my 13th research paper. Gustavii provides excellent advice on the entire process, from preparing graphs (very helpful) to dealing with editors and referees. The book is aimed at graduate students and post-docs but the language is so simple and direct that undergraduate researchers could also learn from it.

  3. This book is ok for the beginner or undergradute student. The materil is not very detailed. It is good for the introduction for people who is usign Egnlish as a secound languge.

5 comments about Bauhaus 1919-1933 (Taschen 25).

  1. If you want a comprehensive historical information as well as tons of full color photos of all sorts of Bauhaus inspired works -from architecture to practical objects - this is the book you should have. Open it and read a single article, think about it and close the book. Or browse through the photos and marvel at the teapots, the furniture, the architectural style.

You can savor this one slowly (and I think you should) rather than trying to read it through all at once. If you do that, you'll start to get a sense of the Bauhaus style and how it fits into the particular period when it came into being - and how it grew and evolved from there.

  2. While this book offers an excellent collection of images related to the Bauhaus, it traces the history and the development of the Bauhaus comprehensively as well.
This book, alongwith Eva Forgacs' Bauhaus Idea and Bauhaus Politics can give you a general idea about what the institution was all about.

    Its an amazing read.

  3. You can know lots of new details. It helps you to study not only design but art itself.

  4. This book has great studies. Lots of new details for me are in it. It helps you to study design and art histry.

  5. Bauhaus was one of the most important movements in design-history.
Magdalena Drosta describes the ideas, the people, the work and the spirit of the Bauhaus. The best thing: It is never boring. The book does not only concentrate on the art taught at the Bauahaus but also describes its political problems.
A lot of excellent pictures in a good priniting quality (especially in relation to the price) make this a book, you always like to look at.

1 comments about General Printing: An Illustrated Guide to Letterpress Printing.

  1. This is a 2006 reissue of a textbook that went through several revisions from 1941 to 1963 and is often recommended as a beginning textbook in letterpress circles.

Although the book makes several references to teachers and classmates, it does stand well on its own. I imagine that most current readers will be those interested in letterpress exclusively, so much of the background information (different types of printing) will not be of immediate use, and my review is geared toward them.

The textbook is intended as a general overview, covering typesetting, mis-en-page, and printing, but is very general, providing more information on general aspects of typesetting rather than the pitfalls associated with various systems. additionally, since it is intended for those pursuing a career in printing (as opposed to hobbyists and job printers), there are only brief mentions of the Kelsey/Adana-type presses, as the authors prefer the more common presses (Heidelberg) that were used for magazines, newspapers and leaflets back then but that are seldom used by most hobbyists.

The book is still very useful, but is intended as an introduction and most hobbyists will outgrow the volume after a bit of individual experimenation. Additionally, since it is from the 1960s, there is only brief coverage of other aspects of letterpress that have fallen aside (such as electroplating); similarly, modern methods of letter-press (photopolymers). Lastly, as our understanding of the early history of the printing press has advanced tremendously in the past 30 years, scholarly users will smirk at the historical sections.

There is still a need for a general survey/study of modern methods of letterpress in its modern form, but early sources such as this provide a good start.

5 comments about Amano: The Complete Prints of Yoshitaka Amano.

  1. The book is well put together and has great image quality, but unless your a big Amano fan than this book is probably not for you. Honestly I wish I could truly give this book 5 stars because I love his ink designs but some of his fairy concepts is not my cup of tea. As for range this book delivers like few art books do and you truly get a feel for his style and what he's about.
If you got the change to spend and love art books than this will make a great addition to your collection. Otherwise I would go to a store and flip through it a bit to see if it is for you.

  2. I've seen his work on the Arts channel and am impressed, but when I looked at this book I was disappointed. I hadn't realized he did violent, prurient comic books for adults, and much of this book is devoted to those examples. However, his line and color and the flowing mystic quality are what attract me, but I am turned away by his subject matter.

  3. This is an amazing item! The art work is simply stunning. Since words are inadequate to describe this book, you must buy it immediately!

  4. The book is wonderful but keep in mind half of the book is a catalog of his work (for other words ton of pictures that are inch and a half by an inch).

  5. This book is a perfect artbook, an wonderful edition, with an excellent paper, and high quality images. Some pages can unfold and form large and amazing images.
This book has a complete collection of the drawings and paintings more remarkable of the author, and reflects the influence of the traditional Japan and the modern occidental arts.
It is an artbook that you cannot let have if you really admire Amano's works.

5 comments about Paper Dreams: The Art And Artists Of Disney Storyboards.

  1. This is a very informative book about the history of Disney's story department staff and the storyboards they created. I learned a lot. I would have liked to have seen more information about their art techniques, but the information about their careers and the vast amount of images made up for it. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on Carl Barks, which shed more light on the man behind the works I've read since I was a kid.

  2. Too often in animation titles, the storyboard element is relegated to a minor footnote. This book presents a wonderful insight to the creative process of animation film making. Many animators and students collect resource material from feature films, and storyboard examples are rare and treasured items. As a storyboarder myself, I was in awe of the beauty and clarity of these works, many I was seeing for the first time. However, anybody with an interest in art or animation will enjoy this book. It is an amazing and definitive collection.

  3. I have most of the 'Art of' books and, though this is a little more pricey than the others, it is worth every cent. It is refreshingly reassuring to finally have a Disney art book NOT written by a Disney staffer, but by a film academic. It was great to read about the men who worked alongside Walt and knew him for all his faults as well rather than the godhead he has become to the company. This book, while showing page after page of behind-the-scenes miniature masterpieces that went into making the classic early features, also describes the not-so-happy endings that such chemistry produced among Disney and his storymen sometimes. It also covers the latter-day storyboard masters like Chris Sanders and the Brizzi twins. I have ambitions of being a Disney storyboard artist someday and this book is perfect inspiration. More than worth it.

  4. If the Disney American Animated Film has one stigma, is the belief that it is made for childern. Mr.Canemaker's book disproves that notion by recounting stories by those lucky few that got to meet Walt, work with him and put his "Dreams" on "Paper" before they were made a reality on film. We are privy in the world of Walt Disney and the people who put his ideas on paper only to have Walt think that they could be better than that. The book is filled with instances of Walt cursing-four letter words and all, when his Soryman ideas did not cut the mustard. Why should they since Walt "was his own best storyman." We get to meet the men that were up to par with Walt-T.Hee and Bill Peet. But these man could be considered Lucifer to Walt's Christian God-those who wish to be better than him or take his place would end in Hell, which in a sense they did. Finally, lets not forget the geniuses Walt himself dealt with-Salvador Dali and Orson Welles. If there was anyone that could top Disney himself ,it was Orson,as described by Walt Himself.

  5. This book shows off the (oddly enough) unsung heros of the Disney Animation Department, the Story Artists. Like his previous book on Disney Inspirational artists, John Canemaker piles on the rarely seen outside of Disney pre-production sketches that form the basis of all to follow. GREAT reproductions--and great to see the subject and the studio treated not only with great respect, but a healthy amount of constructive criticism, too. Beautiful job. I'm waiting for a companion volume featuring unedited complete storyboards for ALL the features(!).

5 comments about Retro Graphics: A Visual Sourcebook to 100 Years of Graphic Design.

  1. This is a very useful book on several levels. First, it covers in a succinct and clear manner the major design trends that have influenced a century of print design. Second - and even better - the book a first-rate "how-to-do-it" manual that dissects these designs and demonstrates how they can be an inspiration (or merely cloned if you're lazy) for contemporary graphic designers. Each major trend is explored through fonts, color choices, and tips on mimicking the graphics using software programs like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. A useful addition to your graphic design reference library.

  2. Really nice book of historic graphic styles, and how-to's. Love this book. If you like retro, you'll like it.

  3. This is a must have for anyone who needs a quick reference in graphic design history. While the book doesn't go into great detail in the explanation of the different movements and style it does provide a good reference for font styles, color palettes and important elements that makes the style unique. The book also includes a color coded time line at the beginning and each brief explanation is in chronological order.

  4. I read some criticisms of this book by other reviewers stating that this book does not give any basic information on graphic design. I believe the title of the book describes exactly what this book was meant to provide, and in my opinion, it does just that. This is an overview of the various graphic design preferences throughout the decades, with color and layout choice examples from each time period. It was obviously not meant to be an extensive textbook on the history of graphic design, rather a sample book of the preferred styles throughout the 20th century, and basic information to recreate the "look" of a certain era.

In this regard, I believe this book succeeds in what it set out to do, and I've found it to be well organized and attractive in its presentation.

  5. I was looking forward to this book and after getting it, my first impression was not good. Then I sat down and read it. It is a great book to have, why?

A lot of information and research went into the book but it is brief and to the point. Examples are very good. However, the real value of this book for me is font references, spot color, and simple techniques to mimic period posters. That alone is worth the purchase.

However, the book is not a step-by-step tutorial on poster creation.
