1 comments about Children's Fashions, 1860-1912: 1,065 Costume Designs from "La Mode Illustree".

  1. Funny thing, all I could think when I was reading through this was 'Hey Kids, if you think what your mothers are trying to put you in now stinks, this is what they would be putting you in back then'.

Considering what kids are wearing today, back then looks pretty good.

My only problem is this book does not show what work cloths of the time were like. Nor does it show ordinary cloths. Just the Sunday best.

4 comments about All-American Ads 40s (Icons Series).

  1. This is one of a series of amazing books published by Taschen.
I have been purchasing them through Amazon (as some are difficult to locate through stores). The series so far covers the 1910s through to the 1980s, a volume per decade. Over 500 pages of quality reproductions of ads from consumer goods to movies of those decades. You could spend hours looking through these books - and still find something you missed last time around. Congratulations to the editor/s.

  2. Baby boomers take note of this wonderful book! As one born in the late 1940's I can't recommend this book highly enough. Here are ads from the magazines when we were born. The ads are printed somewhat smaller for the full page ads and a lot smaller for quarter page ones. However the printing quality is good enough that you can read ads in their entirety even if you occasionally have to use a magnifying glass to read the smaller ones. (Yes, our eyes are beginning to show our age!)You people with good eyes won't have that problem. The ads will awaken a nostalgia for things you don't remember. The Zenith TV with the Giant CIRCLE screen! (It's probably 10 inches!) How about an ad for Rice Krispies with Snap, Crackle and Pop riding American fighter planes! The Greyhound Bus ad asking people to "Help a fighting man enjoy his precious leave or furlough" by giving up travel. It all 'ads' up to a wonderful trip back in time!

  3. Off course I was born in the 40's so this adds is part of the world I lived, so I enjoyed it very very much. I used to collect old Reader's Digests specialy for the adds, it reflect the world of those days and most of it are true art works.
The selection is very wise and complete, the section I liked the most is the car section and the pictures quality is terrific I d'ont undestand how they got so good picture quality if it suppossed they take it material from old magazines.
I'm sure any body will enjoy it a lot.
I'd rate it 6 stars or more if posible.

  4. Another massive collection of colorful magazine advertisements from Taschen. This is the same format as the first book in this series,'All-American Ads 50s', hundresd and hundreds of whole page consumer magazine ads (there are a few pages with two or four) beautifull printed.

As this edition covers the war years, 111 pages carry ads by American companies explaining how they are doing their bit for victory. On page 618 there is a 1941 Greyhound bus ad that features a map of the US showing all the main military camps and the copy tells how Greyhound runs a bus past most of them. In the chapter on 'Industry' I found sixteen 1945 ads from a metal producing company called Bohn, they show futuristic designs for various forms of transport and a wonderful streamline combine harvester.

Most of the ads in the book use illustration rather than photography, so much easier to stretch reality.

This is an ideal gift book for anyone who lived through the forties and if you are just curious about middle-class life back then these thousand ads will give you plenty to think about. A book bargain at the price.

1 comments about Full-Color Picture Sourcebook of Historic Ornament: All 120 Plates from "L'Ornement Polychrome," Series II.

  1. When I first looked at this on the Amazon web site I was not sure about getting it because the pages you can see look to be designs from Egypt and I wanted more then that. I sent for it anyway and it has wonderful designs in full color plates from China, Japan, India, Russia, the Renaissance, Medieval jewelry designs and others. It has just a little bit (a few pages) of everything from ancient Egypt to 18th century France. It will be more then helpful in helping me decide what I like. I am sure this will be one of my most used books and as always I am happy with Dover for making it at a price I can afford.

4 comments about Barcelona Lab.

  1. not a cook book. This book was recomended based on the fact that I order a number of cookbooks. The picture display makes it easy to assume that it is also a cookbook. Not the case. A cool book if your into photography, nothing to do with culinary arts.

  2. Hopefully you are reading this review. This book is not a cook book. It's some sort of hipster who's who of barcelona. B.S.! They should not be marketing this to people with cook books. Maybe amazon will let me return this stupid thing. BIG waste of money!

  3. This book is sold in the cook book list but in fact it isn't. I bought it thinking to find informations about all the restaurant doing "molecular" or contemporary cuisine but was very disappointed to find Lab/Laboratory of anything from fashion to art etc. addresses and few infos.
Very bad advertised and a very poor purchase.

  4. I don't know why Amazon, and other members -in their "special list of kitchen"- have this book among them, this book, just have more photographs than information, about interesting people from barcelona (and that's it). The guy in the photo of above it's "another guy among them...."

I'm very dissapointed with the book -and the recommendations-, i thought it was going to be a little bit more focussed in cooking

    ---------------

2 comments about Letter Art 2: Cool and Colorful Letter Designs to Draw (American Girl Library).

  1. My daughter and I both love scrapbooking and being creative with letters. We enjoyed the first Letter Art book by American Girl, so we purchased the second one as well. We are enjoying it just as much...we recommend having both books. There is a lot of cute and creative ideas in both of them.

  2. Letter Art , the original, or first book is way, way better than the sequel. The second one is not quite as imaginative, attractive, or useful as the first.

3 comments about Legacy of the Puppy: The Ultimate Illustrated Guide (Legacy of the).

  1. This book is wonderful for those who are into puppies in general. This is a great learning guide for children, or people of any age that can appreciate the playful innocence of young pups. This book as an informative reference falls somewhat short, but gives a decent overview of each breed. Each page has a generous amount of pictures of a specific breed of puppy, then a picture of the corresponding breed as an adult, which is nice. The photographs are well taken and the silly poses the puppies fall into will definitly draw a smile or laugh from any reader. It's undeniably adorable and a fun book to have on the shelf. Caution: this book will create an overwhelming desire to buy a dog! ;)

  2. The information about the various puppies is fairly simple and probably a good start for deciding which breeds to look into.

    The pictures are excellent.

The text by "Tadaaki Imaizumi, zoologist" makes me question whether the person actually has a degree. Unlike the authors claims, dogs do indeed share morphological traits with wolves, seeing as how dogs technically share some morphological traits with humans.

The information about raising puppies at the back of the books is also fairly helpful.

If children are reading the book, especially ones interested in dogs and wolves, parents may need to explain that, contrary to what the book seems to imply, dogs are indeed canids. Not just descended from them but are actually in the Canidae family.

  3. Several years ago I bought "Legacy of the Dog"; yesterday, I bought "Legacy of the Puppy," having instantly recognized it as the follow-up to the first--same style, same beautiful glossy book, another picture of a terrier on the cover (this time Airedale instead of Irish). The primary reason I like this book is that it's a good one to coo over with your dog-loving friends; normally we don't get to see much of what all these breeds look like as puppies. At least, not all in one book. Not as many breeds are represented, but with over 200 pages, enough of them are, and not all are AKC-recognized. Basically, every set of pages shows pictures of a mother dog with a variety of beautiful, representative-of-breed puppies around with their ages next to them; most of the breeds follow this general format. The text is essentially the same as you'd find in any dog-breed book but is useful nonetheless; I haven't found major errors in it so far. The text also centers, of course, around the puppies of each breed but also covers what they will likely grow up to be and what to expect. Also, it includes new features like words from actual owners of each puppy breed, offering insight into what it's like to really live with one, & a handy 'diseases by breed' chart.

Looking through these pages and choosing a puppy based on which one you think is cutest is NOT the way to do it and not what the book's intended for, but when used responsibly, or just for fun, it's a great book. The maltese, Great dane, and Brittany puppies look just like my current dogs when they were tiny. My very favorite breeds--afghan hounds, borzois, salukis, and Bedlington terriers--are all represented. The book is wonderful for seeing the whimsy and curiosity of young puppies. Some of the pictures are truly excellent; the little border collies and beagles and Irish setters, for instance, are gorgeous. The Dachshunds are portrayed in a variety of uncommon and common colors, including my favorite adorable long-haired brown and blue merle combination. The Lakeland terrier 'group shot' looks like they're all smiling. One of the 55-day-old Akita puppies looks like Angel from "Lady and the Tramp 2," proving how seeing the puppy version of a breed can change your perception of how a dog will look full-grown; I'd never considered her an Akita pup before! The husky pups have sapphire blue eyes, the Shiba Inus play with pinecones, one of the French bulldogs has the greatest expression on, the Bichons and Schipperkes are precious--well, they all are, ne?

This book is the ultimate look at the cute, happy playfulness of puppies. The kind you leave out and guests will want to go through. It's great, I recommend it.

3 comments about Wedding Fashions, 1862-1912 : 380 Costume Designs from "La Mode Illustree".

  1. The Victorians paid a lot of especial attention to wedding costumery, as Joanne Olian shows in her slim volume displaying the evolution of bridal and bridal-party fashion from 1860 to 1912 as seen in the fashion plates of the famous magazine "La Mode Illustree". The illustrations, all in B&W, are full-page and always accompanied by at least one paragraph of descriptive text taken from the original source material. This book should be owned in conjunction with Olian's other volume, "Victorian and Edwardian Fashions from La Mode Illustree", for a really comprehensive look at the topic of Victorian fashion. Also, anyone who is considering organizing a Victorian-themed wedding will definitely want to peruse this book for ideas!

  2. Dover has a whole series of books devoted to reproductions of vintage fashions. "Wedding Fashions, 1860-1912: 380 Costume Designs from 'La Mode Illustree'" has not only reproductions of illustrations but also detailed descriptive captions. These are not just bridal gowns done in satin, taffeta, and lace, but also creations for bridal attendants, sisters of the bride, and so forth (the idea that the sister of the bride has to have a special dress was an interesting insight into Victorian society). These authentic Victorian fashions will be of interest to costume designers, cultural historians, and fashion enthusiasts. Companion volumes provide full-color fashion plates, contemporary photographs, and authentic fashion patterns.

  3. delightful book with lots of pictures of victorian style wedding attire. useful for "dedicated to detail costumers' and for modern brides who want the victorian look for their weddings as well. plenty of detail pictures of shoes, corsets undergarments, headdresses etc. i would definitely recommend this book.
