5 comments about Dead Children Playing: A Picture Book (Radiohead).

  1. It's worth the comments alone from the less artistic guests that happen by. Nice little compilation of Radiohead inspired or inspired by art.

  2. There really isn't a bad recipe in this book. I was a little turned off by some of the "progressive" stuff at first, but my wife insisted and I loved it. Really gives you some great new ideas about food.

  3. This book is great, cheap, and you can go back and look at it again and again. Stanley Donwood is a genious. Buy it!

  4. I don't imagine that you're looking at this book if you're not already a big Radiohead fan, so you're lucky that this book's target market is definitely you. There is a lot of good artwork, sketches, and lyric pages from Stanley Donwood and Dr. Tchock (Thom Yorke) from the OK Computer era through to the recent artwork for Yorke's The Eraser solo album. One of the things that I found most interesting was that the Hail to the Thief word collage/maps were identified as the cities on which they're based. Of course, NYC was easy, but you probably had to be a real geography whiz to know the rest.

Anyhow, for this price, it's a good book to flip through, although your friends might give you some funny looks when they see the title.

  5. The paintings are spectacular, the text is unpretentious and the price is unbeatable. I would not mind paying a little more for higher quality reproductions.

3 comments about Fashion Illustration by Fashion Designers.

  1. To all the aspiring fashion designers, illustrators, and hipsters... this is a beautiful book to own. I love it so much, it is such a great look at how fashion designers see their creations. Art can be anything, even a sketch of what you think people should wear. I highly approve of this purchase, along with a new pair of shoes.

  2. This is a useful text for entry level fashion students in that it shows a variety of illustration styles used by independent and established designers and acknowledges the differnt role illustration plays in developing garment concepts.
The introduction, illustration notes, quotes and illustrations clearly demonstrate diversity in design methodologies across a variety of garment categories and emphasize the 'personal' aproach taken by individuals in initiating the design process.
From an instructional point of view, I would like to have seen more 'developmental' drawings (if they exist)from the designers who indicate the initial concept illustration diverges from the resolved garment design and possibly a comparison with illustrations created for promotional purposes.
Evidence of designers 'hand-writing' in the form of concept drawings is difficult to locate and Borelli's effort to document such examples is commendable.

  3. An exciting collection of drawings, paintings and illustrations created by international fashion designers showing (once and for all) the tremendous variety of drawing styles one can use to communicate ideas for clothing and accessories design. From the classically trained drawing skills to the uniquely stylized, personal work to a few using the computer. Most of the work looks hand drawn with energy and passion. A welcome change from the many books showcasing cold, high-tech-HACK work with no individuality.
This is not a How-to-draw-fashion book (and thank god!) for there are far too many of those HACK-books: dreadfully boring, mediocre, unstylish and uninspiring books that never seems to be in touch with ANY kind fashion. This is the kind of book that really inspires a fashion professional or student.
The cover seems a very odd choice considering all the knock-out art inside. Alot of people have mentioned they would never be attracted to open the book based on the cover.

5 comments about Prepare to Board! Creating Story and Characters for Animated Features and Shorts.

  1. Ms. Beiman's book is exceptional; it not only discusses storyboarding, but also the entire pre-production process, from character design to art direction to using cinematic lighting and camera angles. I'm never boarding without using tonal drawings again!

I'm going to be the Teaching Assistant for the Storyboarding class at UCLA's MFA Animation Workshop in the fall, and I'm going to tell all the newbies to GET THIS BOOK!!!

  2. This is a truly wonderful book filled with practical, concrete knowledge about how to plan for an animated production.

In the past, I have seen a few somewhat superficial treatments of similar topics, and I was initially a little bit skeptical of this book. Suffice it to say that my expectations were vastly exceeded. Storyboarding is a central part of animated movie production, and it has finally gotten a definitive treatment in book form. This book is highly entertaining, beautifully illustrated, and really packed with information.

Many readers of my own book Introducing Character Animation with Blender are interested in creating animated movies. I highly recommend that they take a look at this inspiring and informative book to ensure that they get off to a good start.

  3. Well written and well organized, "Prepare to Board!" is a wonderful source for learning the ins' and outs of animation boarding.

Nary a step in the process is glossed over or a stone left unturned. I'm quite impressed with the book all around, and have learned a lot about the inner workings of animation.

    A definite recommendation.

  4. Nancy Beiman's book "Prepare to Board" is a must-have for animators. If you're serious about working in the industry then this book is for you.

The quick little lessons are excellent tools for practice and improving skills. This books helps to increase creativity and really gives great advice. No other animation book has achieved what "Prepare to Board" has.

Nancy Beiman knows the ins and outs of the animation world and you can tell why she's worked on so many great projects - she's the best at what she's talking about. Nancy Beiman is a professional and this book will help you along your path to a career.

If you're not lucky enough to know her and have her as a Professor (or even if you do), then it goes without saying BUY THIS BOOK!

  5. Initially I thought this was going to be a book only about storyboarding, but as the title suggests, it "Prepares" you for the story boarding process. It was great to have all the different aspects of character and story developement all in one book.

  1. As all of Heller's books, a beautiful presentation. My own preference for historical referencing of type especially endears this book to me. It will be a valuable library addition for whoever appreciates historical type, & post modern typography.

5 comments about Shirtmaking: Developing Skills for Fine Sewing.

  1. professional shirtmaking tips for everyone interested in making one that really fits. Good tips for those afraid of all those details. very comprehensive.

  2. I've been sewing for over 50 years, and I learned so much from this book !! Wow! Fabrication, technique, results ... worth every penny!!!

  3. This book provided detailed professional information on sewing techniques for creating tailored men's shirts. This book showed you how to alter patterns, create your own pattern OR copy one of your own shirts.
Very infomative. Be prepared to elevate your sewing knowlegde. This book uses "plain talk". It can be read by beginning sewers and advanced sewers.
I recommend purchasing the accomanying video for visual education.

  4. If I had viewed this book prior to purchase I would not have bought it. Its got some strange designs and all I really wanted was some clear patterns etc for quality shirts.

  5. I've read a lot of books on sewing techniques, some better than others, but this one "takes the cake." I thought this book was easy to read, and very well explained and illustrated. I actually felt like I could go back into the sewing room with confidence! Many of the author's directions could be applied to more garments than just shirts, so I think this is a valuable book.

5 comments about Brenda Kinsel's Fashion Makeover: 30 Days to Diva Style!.

  1. The book is for women over 40, but you don't really know it till you start reading.
It has some interesting points of views on colors and accessories, but most of the advise are for the cooler times and i didn't find anything useful for the hot summer times...

  2. If you're ready to take hours and hours to find your "diva style", this book is for you. I was looking for something that didn't require so much "homework".

The "spa" sections of the book I thought were ridiculous... like hiring a masseuse to come to your home to meet you and your friends for a "spa" day. I can't think of 1 person that has that kind of money to throw away.

There are several "assignments" in the book that really do help you determine your style if you need that kind of help.

The section on cleaning out your closet was a great help to me. Sometimes you just need that kind of kick in the pants.

I didn't care for her writing style. It was a bit too wordy and too "happy" for my taste, but others might enjoy it.

Some of the ideas for working with your body type were great for me, and proved very useful, and for that I am truly thankful. So while I didn't love this book, it was still quite helpful in the long run.

  3. I really wanted to like this book but it was not possible. There really is not a lot of advice about anything that is of any practible benefit, the first chapter says you can do the exercises in a week without ever getting out of your pajamas. Geez, that really has never been one of my goals. Not a word about what items to actually put together to make a comprehensive and fashionable look. Do yourself a favor and buy the much better "How Not to Look Old" by Charla Krupp. You will find you have spent your money to much better purpose.

  4. This book was great for expanding the imagination, setting goals, and updating your closet for YOU. If you do not already love clothes, it provides a sort of role model as to how to get in there and really have fun with them, without a lot of "shoulds." However, since I am fashion challenged I needed to get a second "should" book about how to put together an outfit and be told which are the basic pieces. If you are a mature woman, I recommend Nifty After Fifty as the antidote to this book, because it brings you back down to earth, back to basics about what to wear on what occasion, based on a few basic colors and your personal life situtaion.

  5. I had so much fun with this book! I read through the whole thing in one day and immediately started on the different exercises...using the quizzes, I was able to clarify and articulate my personal style, poring over magazines, I ripped out examples of color combinations, accessories, and textures that I am attracted to, and then I got started on my closet...cleaning, organizing, and putting together fun, layered, and accessorized outfits. I even had my son take pictures of the outfits. It was so much fun! It was just the right pick me up in the middle of a cold and dreary winter. Interestingly, I discovered that I don't need to do very much shopping...so that was a definite plus. I had most of the pieces already and also had a variety of fashion bundles already in my closet. I also have a HUGE pile of clothes to donate. I love the way the book was structured and organized. It was simple to read..no extra text, lots of use of text boxes, quotes from women. The only suggestion I would make for improvement is that I would like to see large glossy photos of women with before and after pictures as well as just inspiring photos of divas rather than boring pencil drawings! If I were the author, my second book, would take it to the next step, with the marketing of a resonance journal/workbook, that includes pockets to include inspiring photos and words, as well as before and after photos showing ideas on how to combine different accessories, colors, and textures together.

5 comments about Building Design Portfolios: Innovative Concepts for Presenting Your Work (Design Field Guide).

  2. I think this is a great book for those looking for ideas on making a new portfolio. Especially students about to graduate (like me). I got the idea for my portfolio from this book. It shows a ton of awesome examples in there and it is really inspiring.

  4. This is the information I've been needing to assemble a portfolio that will shine. I think it should be require reading for anyone in Graphic Design who is trying to sell themselves through their portfolio.

  5. This is a great book - I have found it to be very informative and the author is quite thorough. Gorgeous images and I am really happy with the purchase.

I just wish someone would write a book such as this relative to the Asia Pacific market!

Definitely worth a look as it is really well presented.
