1 comments about Under The Lone Star Flagstick.
- I am truly grateful to my dear friend, Dan Cruse. Frankly, I was unaware of this book until he recommended it and then lent his copy to me. It provided one of the most entertaining readings I have experienced in recent years. Yes, it is about Texas golf and golfers but I think that non-golfers will enjoy it as much I did.
Hauser has assembled and skillfully edited 52 articles, a few of which she wrote. The material includes profiles of some of the greatest players (Bolt, Couples, Crenshaw, Demaret, Hagen, Hogan, Kite, Nelson, Rawls, Trevino, Wadkins, Whitworth, and Zaharias) as well as others who also made significant contributions to competitive golf, notably Harvey Penick ("Golf's Coach of the Century" and bestselling author) and Dave Williams (whose University of Houston teams won numerous N.C.A.A. championships). Some of the finest sportswriters contributed to this collection, notably Mickey Herskowitz, Dan Jenkins, Jim Murray, Grantland Rice, and Dallas' own Blackie Sherrod. Because there is a such a rich variety of subjects, each reader will have her or his own favorites among them. My own include Jenkins' "Hogan," Herskowitz' "Golf's Teacher of the Century" (i.e. Penick), all of Part III in which several authors discuss the unique relationships between Penick and his students, Crenshaw and Kite, David Cassstevens' "Bolt's Life Is His Curse," Peter Dobreiner's "A Tribute to Demaret's Greatness," Skip Bayless' "For Merry Mex, the Laughter Only Hides the Tears," Penick's "Betsy Rawls," Nick Seitz's "Houston's Odd Couple" (i.e. Demaret and Jackie Burke, Jr.), and Gary Cartwright's "Hustle Park: Where They Ship the Pros Home C.O.D." (i.e. Tenison Park in Dallas), a public course where Dick Martin and "Titanic" Thompson (among the predatory local "amateurs") won so much money from their opponents (i.e. victims) that they could not afford to turn pro.
Those who enjoy this book are urged to check out Harvey Penick's Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime of Golf, Harvey Penick's Little Green Golf Book, and And If You Play Golf, You're My Friend: Further Reflections of a Grown Caddie; also Michael Arkush's Fairways and Dreams: Twenty-Five of the World's Greatest Golfers and the Fathers Who Inspired Them, the Sporting News' 50 Greatest Golfers : A Celebration of the All-Time Best, and The Ultimate Golf Book: A History and a Celebration of the World's Greatest Game, edited by Charles McGrath and David McCormick.

1 comments about Making the Turn: A Year Inside the PGA Senior Tour.
- This is a great read from one of the players themselves at the time. So, he's no Trevino or Palmer. Frank was a solid player (11 regular Tour wins, I think) during his regular Tour years and has proven himself admirably behind the mike for years with ESPN. He's a stand-up guy who tells it like it is.
If you want to know what it's like inside the ropes with the over 50 Tour set, read this book. But start first with Pro, the first book Frank wrote in 1970 with Dick Schaap.

1 comments about Thomas "Tom" Bendelow: The Johnny Appleseed of American Golf.
- This was a nice, comfortable read. Bendelow weaves the early history of golf in America with the interesting story of one of the early and prolific course designers. You don't need to be a rabid golfer to enjoy this well-written book.

3 comments about GOLF: THE WINNING FORMULA.
- I really liked how Faldo explained how the swing "feels". He was able to articulate things I've never heard before, such as
1) the left side resists on the back swing and the right side resists on the downswing
2) the legs work circularly, there is no lateral movement
- Nick Faldo is the reason I took up golf, so perhaps I am biased. But for me this book represents a natural complement to 'A Swing For Life' and is unique in its thorough treatment of the swing; where many books treat critical aspects of the swing in a superficial manner, Faldo discusses his own swing in great detail, covering both mechanics and the elusive feel of the movements involved in building a repeatable and sustainable swing.
- This text is the most comprehensive blueprint of the method Nick Faldo employs. After reading this book, one is able to fill in the gaps that were not covered in other famous related texts. If learning is a "step-like" process, then this is the next logical step from David Leadbetter's THE GOLF SWING.

5 comments about Fred Couples: Golf's Reluctant Superstar.
- Fred Couples is a fantastic golfer and an interesting person. This book doesn't even come close to telling the life story of this facinating individual. Way toooooo much play-by-play of tooooooo many mediocre golf tournaments.
- I'm not a golfer, but I was interested in Fred's life story, and that part was interesting, but the pages and pages of each shot of a tournament was boring to a non-golfer. I got what I wanted, the human side.
- This book was similar to any par four played: average drive down the middle, with an average approach shot thirty feet from the pin. The birdie putt slid by two inches on the left. Putted in for par. An adamant Couples fan, I probably had higher expectations about a really good read about my favorite player. Learned alot about him, but style left me weary. Shot after shot description of each tournament left me tired. Not bad though overall. Anything on Freddie is appreciated!
- I have always been a big fan of Freddy, this book explained his issues in a more concise way than I had previously thought they occurred. I highly recommend this book, whether your a fan of Fred or not, it provides an insight into the rigors of a golf professional.
- The book was ok. If you're a Couples fan you probably know most of what you're going to read already. In some regards the author made Deborah out to be a little more "cartoonish' than she probably was. Would've like a little more depth rather than just remembrances of golf tournaments past.

2 comments about Fairways and Dreams: Twenty-Five of the World's Greatest Golfers and the Fathers Who Inspired Them.
- For me, reading a book about golf normally wouldn't have sparked my intrest, but I couldn't put this one down. I especially liked the part about the 18 year old phenom Elizabeth Bauer. She is my daughters hero. My husband passed away last year and he was teaching my daughter the game, and she was crushed. They were best friends. I saw this book in a store and bought it for my daughter and she became Elizabeth Bauer's biggest fan. I think the book really helped her to see that she can still make their dream come true. Now of course she wants to play for Duke University! Thank you Micheal Azurish for writing this wonderful book. It was nice for my daughter to read about famous people like Payne Stewart and see how they made it, and soon to be stars like Bauer. Thank you so much, a Five star book, Kerri and Kammi from North Carolina.
- While reading Fairways and Dreams, I can't help but let my eyes fill with tears when learning the stories of such golf greats as Payne Stewart and Amy Alcott. Their determination and drive to succeed inspires me. It's nice to read about amateurs as well, and I was happy to read Beth Bauers' story. I was privledged enough to see her play in several tournaments over the past few years (being a native of Florida) and I must say, she has turned into such a beautiful, accomplished young woman. Her father clearly taught her well. Beth is one of those people whom you know is just special. I think this book helps give others an idea of the talent these people hold,an insight as to who they are, and most importantly,it tells us all about the wind that will always be beneath their wings.
