5 comments about Chasing Tiger.

  1. Beyond the aggrandizing sports articles and simplistic examinations of Tiger's stroke or sheer ability lies the story of his effect on the PGA.
Woods has changed golf the same way an eathquake can change a small, extraordinarily inclusive, community.
The landscape is different. Familar direction markers no longer exist and are replaced by new totems of accomplishment and mountains of greatness.
Instead of toeing the party line of Tiger's perfection Sampson examines Tiger's effect on the PGA community.
Anyone curious about the innerworkings of the PGA, with all its glory, success, and abject drudgery, should READ THIS BOOK.
Anyone interested in Tiger Woods and his permanent effect on golf SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.
This book tells you what he has done to the game and how the playing field has changed for every single player who picks up a club.

  3. I have enjoyed Sampson's writing in the past, but this book disappointed. As advertised, it really is a book about the chasing of Tiger Woods -- by competitors, fans and media. One can enjoy the "behind the scenes" looks at the tour, and if you are interested in Charles Howell III, you will get a bunch of info here. I felt the book headed off in too many directions, the metaphors were WAY overblown, and the lack of focus was frustrating. If you are interested in the peripheral insights to be gained, or simply love Sampson -- wait for the paperback!

  4. I read this book straight through! "Chasing Tiger" is not yet another Tiger Woods biography, but an inside look at Tiger Woods through the eyes of other professional golfers, groupies, media people, caddies, etc..Curt Samspon tells a truthful, and sometimes shocking, account of what it's like to be on the tour with Tiger. This is a great book, not just for golf fans, but for anyone who is interested in more than what they read on the sports page. Curt Sampson has great style, and you should read this book.

  5. A very enjoyable read....as usual, I hated for Curt Sampson's book to be over!

5 comments about Champion Spirit Series: Jackie Robinson - Fresh and Crisp.

  1. It took a health expert to tell me more about Jackie Robinson and Hank Greenberg than all the bios I've read on these memorable athletes. Letha Hadady has provided a real service here by combining history, culture and health care all in one wallop -- and she did so with a firm command of her subjects. I knew about the religious barrier and the color barrier, but not to the extent as provided here in this short but illuminating piece. Jackie Robinson had diabetes? I didn't know. I go back to Montreal with him, even before he got to Brooklyn, when he played for the Montreal Royals, so I've always felt that connection with Robinson and still think he did more to bring the races together than anyone. I was inspired by this story and I'll be returning to this Amazon Short to learn more from Letha's health tips. Altogether, a superb essay. Jack Engelhard

  2. Even if you are not a sports fan this Amazon Short contains extremely valuable advice on herbs and diet for diabetes--a health problem that hurt Jackie Robinson and affects many other people today. I am a fan of Letha Hadady's books and have lost over 40 pounds using Feed Your Tiger. This life story of Jackie Robinson is good reading and very useful for anyone who wants to protect health. I am giving it to my Little League friends.

  3. I've been a Jackie Robinson fan my whole life. I think he personified the sport of baseball--honor, courage, and team spirit. It was a thrill of a lifetime to see him play. This piece by Letha Hadady is a fine tribute to his legend and I appreciate learning things about Jackie I never knew before. Since I have diabetes, I will use her advice to protect my health. Thank you forever.

  4. I have used Letha Hadady's popular alternative health and beauty books for years. Her new Amazon Short on the life and times of baseball great Jackie Robinson makes good, fast, and easy reading. I especially enjoyed the stories about the important friendships between Robinson and Dodgers' manager Branch Rickey and Jewish ballplayer Hank Greenberg. Truly inspiring. I am giving this Amazon Short as a gift to my friends who are World Series fans and those who need health advice for conquering diabetes. FIVE STARS reading!

  5. When I was a kid my father took me to Brooklyn's Ebbits Field and we sat high up in the bleachers, ate popped corn and yelled for the home team. At age ten I rode my bike half way across the City to the house of Carl Erskine, the Dodgers' star pitcher so that he could sign my baseball. Even now--so many years later--I can still list the lineup of the team that put Brooklyn on the map. I never got to meet Jackie Robinson, a great American hero and shining example for everyone who loves the sport.

This Amazon Short tells Jackie Robinson's awe-inspiring personal story-- his troubled youth and struggles against racial prejudice. As an added bonus, because this biography is written by Letha Hadady a highly respected natural health expert, it describes the best diet and herbs for diabetes, a disease that Jackie had and that many other people suffer from today. Jackie acted with great character and confidence in all that he did. Youth today can learn a lot from his story. Anyone with diabetes will be interested in the sound health advice found here. I strongly recommend buying this Short and I look forward to the upcoming Champion Spirit Series of Amazon Shorts.

5 comments about Ashley'S Garden Aftermath Of Oklahoma City Bombing.

  1. This is a touching book about the loss of a child and the process it took to recover spiritually and emotionally. Highly recommended.

  2. I confess I bought this book with a lot of worry that I would waste both my time and money and was really surprised that I got interested so quickly. I highly recomend this book. It is a wellwritten account of what happened {I live in Oklahoma} It is really a moving book. I actually cried and it takes alot for a book to make me cry. It also made me stop and think about my relationship with god.I'ved read alot of the bombing books and this is one of the best.

  3. This book is very wonderful and inspirational. It tells in full detail about one family's loss on that fateful day in Oklahoma City. It's great for people dealing with a loss or even for people who aren't going through a loss.

  4. I started this book thinking it would take me a while to read it, but I read it over two days because I just could not stop reading. Kathleen Treanor's story is very personal; it's not just what you know from the news. And much of the book focuses on her healing process.

She offers hope to anyone who has suffered a tragedy, not just those affected in Oklahoma or New York.

I never realized how much the letters from school children meant to victims of a tragedy.

Kathleen talks about how one day everyone else seems to go back to a normal life, and you can't understand how they possibly could after what has happened. Yet she eventually heals, and her journey is truly inspirational.

    This is a wonderful book.

  5. On April 19, 1995, the lives of the Treanor family were forever changed by the tragic loss of their daughter and parents. The author describes through heart-breaking detail their struggle to survive and eventually triumph over this horrible chapter in their lives. As an Oklahoman, I started the book believing it would speak to all of us who experienced this terrorist act in our own neighborhood. By the time I finished, I realized this book speaks not just to Oklahoma, but to the world.

5 comments about Sir Walter And Mr. Jones: Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, And The Rise Of American Golf.

  1. Beautifully written and factual.
The author introduces us to the two most accomplished golfer of their era.
This book is for anyone who not only enjoys the game of golf but also its historical context.
    Very good and enjoyable read.

  2. This is a serious work by a professor of history. It ISN'T filled with anecdotes ("And then Walter said to Bobby ..."), descriptions of shots ("Bobby then drilled a quail-high mashie between the towering pines ..."), gossip, swing analyses, etc. If this is what you're looking for, you'll be sorely disappointed. It's fairly dry -- make that extremely dry -- but is well-researched (hundreds of endnotes) and will be fascinating for anyone with an interest in the history of American golf. The format is a dual biography of Jones and Hagen in which their respective careers are compared and contrasted to give the reader an understanding of the rise of American golf in the era 1900-1930. The two men were so different in virtually every respect that this approach is very effective. Those who think golf began with Palmer, Nicklaus or Woods will gain an appreciation of what "gods" Jones and Hagen really were during the era in which they played. Hagen especially tends to be overlooked, but this book is an important reminder that he was one of the true greats of the game in addition to being one of its two or three all-time "characters." I didn't have the feeling that the author was particularly knowledgeable or avid about the game -- instead, this is a work of historical research, just as you or I might produce a history of badminton if we were willing to spend the time to do the research. When you're done, you won't "know" Bobby Jones as well as you'd know him if you read his and O. B. Keeler's own voluminous writings, and you won't be a fount of anecdotes, but you will have a solid grasp of Jones' and Hagen's place in history, how golf became an American obsession and how American golf eclipsed British golf. All of this for the price of a couple of dozen Top-Flite x-outs.

  3. After reading this book, I found that Dr. Stephen Lowe really brings to life the lives of Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. This book is written in a descriptive oriented reading. Before reading this book, I found that golf was not much of a sport. I found that there is truly a rich history in golf that I have come to respect and want to learn more about. I applaud Dr. Lowe and hope to read future writings.

  4. A meticulously researched book, an asset to any avid golfers bookshelf.

  5. I was very disapointed in this book. It seemed more like a collection of facts than a insightful biography. I felt I learn little about the two man that I could not have found in a enclopedia.

5 comments about A Golfer's Education.

  1. This is an approach to golf books that I would really like to see more of. The author has a very keen perception and attention to detail when it comes to describing the best that Scottish golf has to offer, but so have many others that have come before him. The wonderful part about this book is that Kilfara also opens up a part of his soul so that the reader can try to relate to or understand him as a person while he describes this journey. Many times have I read a book about sports and wondered about personal details of the author that determine his perception of what he is desacribing. Kilfara lets us in to a part of his psyche and should be roundly applauded for it. Anyone that did not enjoy this book I believe does not like, understand or appreciate golf or is plainly jealous of the wonderful courses the author has been able to play.

  2. OK, parts of the this book were really enjoyable. The author's portrayal of the town of St. Andrews and the characters that roam its ancient streets and the oldtimers who haunt the Old Course are priceless. Also, several of the courses the author describes (Machrie and Dornoch come to mind) make me want to book a trip right away.
OK, now what's disturbing about the book. What's annoying? Well, the author gets rather full of himself (oh yeah, how many times do we have to hear that he's from Harvard???) as he plays the daring expatriate who is so much better than all of the other rude, loud American tourists roaming Scotland. News Flash! Author, you will always be an American!!
The way the author breaks clubs and treats his friends and girlfriend and any other golfer on the links who never played golf for Harvard is truly horrid. Attention readers and friends of the author: never book a trip with author. Red flag.
Essentially, I fell in love with St. Andrews because of this book. This book renewed my passion for the game. But basically, after reading the book I come away with the feeling that I don't really like the author...
(So much of this book was filled with boring, detailed hole by hole accounts of the various golf outings the author made. Shoot me! Oh, yea wait till you read how the author treats the blind guy! When you get down to it, the author acts very selfish and pompous throughout the book and treats people like garbage. But before that chapter ends he will have a moment of enlightenmnet where he puts things in perspective and he repents. Then next chapter he breaks more clubs and screams some more, followed by more enlightenment and soul searching. Repeat...)

  3. Kilfara really captures the essence of the game in a must read for all avid golfers. Kilfara's narrative tells an enchanting story of golf, personal growth and romance all while on an academic sojourn from Harvard. The prose is imminently readable and will capture the hearts and minds of most golfers and non-golfers alike. I wholeheartedly recommend this endearing book to all who might need a trip to the old world.

  4. This was one of the only golf books that I read so far this year. When I read about golf, I try to balance my reading on books on instruction with books about peoples's lives at it relates to golf. I read most of this book, thinking that the premise was decent, and the appearance of the book was quite 'new' (I read it in March 2002). I have probably read 25 to 30 golf-related books and this is one of the worst. I feel there is no depth to the stories about the book. I feel like it's just some person who is trying to make a quick buck. It really left me dissatisfied.

  5. I've encountered two types of golfers in my trips to the British Isles -- those who love to play it as it lies and those who wished they were in Hawaii. This book is for those who are fascinated with blind shots, are well aware that the weather is apt to change in an instant and find BBC broadcasts mesmerizing -- even when it's horse racing and cricket! I read this book in one sitting and loved the way it captured golf (and day-to-day life) in Scotland.

1 comments about Golf: The Woman's Game.

  1. This book has easily accessible information, really interesting stories, fabulous archival photographs, good insights into women golfers, and just the nicest TONE. Would be good for experienced golfers, for those just starting, and for those who might enjoy reading about the history of the sport from the distaff side. A good book to read when you're waiting for someone else to finish a round, or to inspire you to get out there and swing that club!
