5 comments about Ashley'S Garden Aftermath Of Oklahoma City Bombing.

  1. This is a touching book about the loss of a child and the process it took to recover spiritually and emotionally. Highly recommended.

  2. I confess I bought this book with a lot of worry that I would waste both my time and money and was really surprised that I got interested so quickly. I highly recomend this book. It is a wellwritten account of what happened {I live in Oklahoma} It is really a moving book. I actually cried and it takes alot for a book to make me cry. It also made me stop and think about my relationship with god.I'ved read alot of the bombing books and this is one of the best.

  3. This book is very wonderful and inspirational. It tells in full detail about one family's loss on that fateful day in Oklahoma City. It's great for people dealing with a loss or even for people who aren't going through a loss.

  4. I started this book thinking it would take me a while to read it, but I read it over two days because I just could not stop reading. Kathleen Treanor's story is very personal; it's not just what you know from the news. And much of the book focuses on her healing process.

She offers hope to anyone who has suffered a tragedy, not just those affected in Oklahoma or New York.

I never realized how much the letters from school children meant to victims of a tragedy.

Kathleen talks about how one day everyone else seems to go back to a normal life, and you can't understand how they possibly could after what has happened. Yet she eventually heals, and her journey is truly inspirational.

    This is a wonderful book.

  5. On April 19, 1995, the lives of the Treanor family were forever changed by the tragic loss of their daughter and parents. The author describes through heart-breaking detail their struggle to survive and eventually triumph over this horrible chapter in their lives. As an Oklahoman, I started the book believing it would speak to all of us who experienced this terrorist act in our own neighborhood. By the time I finished, I realized this book speaks not just to Oklahoma, but to the world.

5 comments about Sir Walter And Mr. Jones: Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, And The Rise Of American Golf.

  1. Beautifully written and factual.
The author introduces us to the two most accomplished golfer of their era.
This book is for anyone who not only enjoys the game of golf but also its historical context.
    Very good and enjoyable read.

  2. This is a serious work by a professor of history. It ISN'T filled with anecdotes ("And then Walter said to Bobby ..."), descriptions of shots ("Bobby then drilled a quail-high mashie between the towering pines ..."), gossip, swing analyses, etc. If this is what you're looking for, you'll be sorely disappointed. It's fairly dry -- make that extremely dry -- but is well-researched (hundreds of endnotes) and will be fascinating for anyone with an interest in the history of American golf. The format is a dual biography of Jones and Hagen in which their respective careers are compared and contrasted to give the reader an understanding of the rise of American golf in the era 1900-1930. The two men were so different in virtually every respect that this approach is very effective. Those who think golf began with Palmer, Nicklaus or Woods will gain an appreciation of what "gods" Jones and Hagen really were during the era in which they played. Hagen especially tends to be overlooked, but this book is an important reminder that he was one of the true greats of the game in addition to being one of its two or three all-time "characters." I didn't have the feeling that the author was particularly knowledgeable or avid about the game -- instead, this is a work of historical research, just as you or I might produce a history of badminton if we were willing to spend the time to do the research. When you're done, you won't "know" Bobby Jones as well as you'd know him if you read his and O. B. Keeler's own voluminous writings, and you won't be a fount of anecdotes, but you will have a solid grasp of Jones' and Hagen's place in history, how golf became an American obsession and how American golf eclipsed British golf. All of this for the price of a couple of dozen Top-Flite x-outs.

  3. After reading this book, I found that Dr. Stephen Lowe really brings to life the lives of Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. This book is written in a descriptive oriented reading. Before reading this book, I found that golf was not much of a sport. I found that there is truly a rich history in golf that I have come to respect and want to learn more about. I applaud Dr. Lowe and hope to read future writings.

  4. A meticulously researched book, an asset to any avid golfers bookshelf.

  5. I was very disapointed in this book. It seemed more like a collection of facts than a insightful biography. I felt I learn little about the two man that I could not have found in a enclopedia.

3 comments about FINAL ROUNDS: A FATHER, A SON, THE GOLF JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME.

  1. As James and his Dad take a final trip to Scotland, he and his wonderful Dad get to know each other and the love for each other, which had always been there becomes very personal. Golf is the game each loves and becomes the expression of their love for each other. They communicate and connect for long or short drives, it doesn't matter. The game of golf is there spoken and unspoken language. Opti, Jame's dad, has a few months to live, and his pain is numbed by playing and being near his son. They truely connect and James reads his dads words and remembers every detail of his life. The man is certainly teeing of with Bobby Jones, Julius Boros and Old Tom Morris. Waiting and watching are Love, Strange, Watson and a host of others who have shown the same respect for the game. Every golfer who was taught the game as a child by a parent (my Mother was my Opti) will relate and cry thru the last chapter, just as I did.

  2. Truly an outstanding story wonderfully told. A love story about Dad's and son's that anyone with a heart will enjoy.

I listened to the tapes on a long trip. Upon returning home, the last tape was not complete so I sat in the car for 30 minuites to hear the end

  3. Even though I'd read the book, I recently bought the audio for a new long commute. James Dobson's reading of his own words is a poignant description of the journey he and his father make towards the end of their relationship. As with many aspects of life, golf and this journey reflect upon each other. The goals on the course mirror those in life; balance, harmony, relaxation while trying to achieve important goals. James Dobson narrates this journey, on and off the golf course, with compassion and humor. It has helped me in my thoughts about both golf and my father..

3 comments about In My Dreams, I Walk With You.

  1. What an inspiration this book was for me. To travel all over and make people enjoy the game you love after over-coming many obstacles and handicaps...this book can inspire those who love golf, dogs, traveling, the pursuit of a dream! Truly, something I will remember

  2. This is another of those pity party books. Really, just another poorly written book that has no redeeming qualities.

  3. This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review on a book that I have read. Please understand that I have known Dennis for over 30 years and that I may be a bit biased, but this is a book that is important for people to read. This is the story of a regular normal everyday person who has soared over what life has delt him. Dennis has found a way to follow his dreams and do the things that are important to him overcoming every obstacle in his way. The book evokes every emotion as you read about his life and his struggles. This is a great read for golfers and non-golfers alike with its lessons on how to deal with life. Buy it and share it with others.

1 comments about The Architects of Golf: A Survey of Golf Course Design from Its Beginnings to the Present, With an Encyclopedic Listing of Golf Architects and Their Courses.

  1. For anyone who is interested in golf course architecture, this book is a must for your library. Contains a complete index (a continuous work-in-process) of architects and their courses. Essentially every course in the world (including those which are no longer in existance), is listed including its location, date of orgin and the architects who created it also the provider of any known substantial (professional) renovation work. It must take a tremendous effort for the authors to keep this book up to date. I hope the fact that this book is no longer in print indicates that the authors are hard at work. If you do not have a copy find one, if you have to go the the library and photocopy theirs (but bring a stack of dimes its very long).

3 comments about Gettin' to the Dance Floor.

  1. Gettin' To The Dance Floor is a unique and memorable history of American golf by former editor of Golf Magazine, Al Barkow. Included are first-hand accounts from legendary golfers such as Lighthorse Harry Cooper, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Gene Sarazen, and others. Gettin' To The Dance Floor describes how much of a grind it was for a player to be part of the Tour. Scraping up enough cash to eat, finding a ride to the next tournament, finding sleeping arrangements, all the while searching for a better golf swing with nowhere to practice and not time to do it. All this while keeping a club job and a family together while traveling around the country in the middle of the Depression. Gettin' To The Dance Floor is "must" reading for anyone who ever dreamed of going on Tour or who has admired those who did.

  2. I had an opportunity to read "Gettin' To The Dance Floor" five or six years ago, having found it in the golf collection of the main branch of the Washington, DC, public library.

Barkow's extremely interesting profiles of historic golf figures rekindled my long-dormant interest in the game, and had me checking out 5 or 6 books at a time !

One of Al's profiles, on "Wild Bill" Melhorn, a star of the '20s and contemporary of Walter Hagen's (Hagen rated Melhorn's 2-iron as the best in the game, in a listing of the best players with each club), provided information allowing me to contact the author of a privately-published book on Melhorn.

I ordered 2 copies, one for a friend, and was extremely delighted to read of the exploits of one of the very good, but lesser-known greats, of golf's transitionary era from the wooden shafts of the'20s to the introduction of steel shafts in the '30s.

If Tiger hasn't read "Gettin' To The Dance Floor" (and he probably has !), he should. There are several compelling profiles of little-known (today) black golf pioneers.

Every fan of golf's history in America during the period from 1920 - 1960 will enjoy this book. A great read !

  3. Gettin to the dance floor is a book full of stories which can create inspiration in any golfer. To truly appreciate the game of golf you must know something about its past. This books covers the stories of Bill Spiller, Gene Sarazan, Sam Snead, and much more.... If you are curious about them or the history of golf this is a must have book..
