3 comments about The Big Book of Vaseline Glass (Schiffer Book for Collectors.).

  1. This is a book on Vaseline glass, but a lot of the pieces in the book are from Europe, not the U.S. If that is what you are looking for, then this is the book for you. The book has great pictures and good info on the chemical makeup of the glass and it's history.

  2. Very good overview of Vaseline/Uranium glass throughout it's history. It could definitely use more photographic examples but the verbage is worthwhile.

  3. This is an excellent book for anyone that wishes to learn more about Vaseline glass. I already had some knowledge of the glass, but was very pleased w/ alll the information in the book. It has helped me w/ future decisions on glass purchases. I highly recommend this book!!

1 comments about Stained Glass: From its Origins to the Present.

  1. Raguin's overview of stained glass is the best available art historical overview of the medium, though it's not exactly exhaustive -- it covers the development of stained glass from early medieval time through the present day (though the examples of modern stained glass are comparatively weak), focusing on the evolving function of stained glass in its architectural context (as adornment, a didactic tool, an artistic medium). This is a reference book. You will not find patterns or techniques in it; and it does not examine any particular set of windows in depth; but it does frame the development of style and technology in an understandable narrative, and it has plenty of excellent photographs. Well worth the money.

1 comments about Old Stained Glass for the Home: A Guide for Collectors and Designers (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. I LOVE this stained glass book. It has hundreds of color photos of stained glass windows in countless styles, from prairie to etched to bevels to antique "factory" English, English muffle, and a lot more. This is an awesome reference tool for designs for making your own stained glass windows, and its just fun to look at. You can't go wrong with this book - it should be a "must-have" for every person who is seriously interested in the craft of stained glass.

The book is great; the price is NOT. It used to be $10 here on Amazon and now it costs the full cover price! I was just about to buy one as a gift and now I've changed my mind. So that's a bummer - I would look elsewhere to try and find a better deal. You might as well buy it in a regular bookstore and not have to deal with waiting for it to ship and stuff.

5 comments about The Hazel-atlas Glass Identification And Value Guide (Hazel Atlas Glass Identification and Value Guide).

  1. There is so much glassware out there I need to identify and this book really helps - and not only on Hazel Atlas glassware

  2. Excellent book - Perfect for the beginner or long-time collector. Great photos and each page is well explained.

  3. This is a fantastic reference book for anyone who is a fan of Hazel-Atlas glassware. The pictures are crisp and clear - the colors are vivid - and every page is full of photos. Not all of the Hazel-Atlas glassware is marked and this book is a valuable guide to authenticate those items, as well as being an interesting look into the many pieces of glassware that they produced. Very nice to have by the computer when you are surfing ebay.

  4. The identification and value guide are very easily read. The pictures are of great help in identifying the various styles of Hazel-Atlas glass. There is a brief history of the glass from 1885 until the factory was sold to the Continental Can Company in 1956. All in all, well worth the purchase.

  5. I was really impressed with this book. It filled in many of the little identification gaps that I had missing as a glass collector. There are so many items listed here that were not in his other books. It was enjoyable.......I read it in one day.......informative.....I was able to id many pieces.....and beautifully illustrated. I like the outline key too!

3 comments about Lötz: Bohemian Glass 1880-1940.

  1. In the complex and confusing world of vintage art glass where attribution of unsigned examples is often difficult, the adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" applies. In that regard this volume delivers the goods. This book is filled with examples, the vast majority in color, of Loetz art glass. Many are listed with the name of the form designer, the artist or decorator, and whether or not the example is signed or unsigned. Included is a history of the company, exhibition chronology, and its relationship with artists such as those associated with the Wiener Werkstatte. There's a good section on factory marks and signatures, a section on artist biographies, and even a couple of graphically represented pages on "How to Make Iridescent Glass."

  2. I am thrilled to have this wonderfully illustrated book in my Library. It is beyond description, if one tries to portray this history of Loetz Glass in words alone. I found suspected Loetz vases here that I, happily, own, and the authors left nothing to be desired in this publication....for the Loetz owner ~ it is a must have, indeed! Thank you, Amazon, for selling it at half the price of one offered on EBAY! UPS brought a jewell today! Now, hopefully, more Loetz will be on the way!

  3. I bought this book in the hopes of learning more about the glass that has become my collecting passion. At over $50, I expected this to be a very complete book that would cover the different decors and styles of glass made by Loetz. However, after a very brief description of the early decors such Papillon, I found the vast majority of this book to focus on the Phanomen decor, with very little information on other decors, especially the earlier ones. The reference pages in the back of the book were very helpful (giving the date, genre and colors for a particular shaped vase), but again, most of these were Phanomen and most of the glass I have seen that I know to be documented Loetz are not even mentioned.
In general, I am glad I bought this book - the pictures are gorgeous - but wish there was more information on other decors and vase forms created by Loetz.

1 comments about Dante Marioni: Blown Glass.

  1. Showcasing Dante Marioni's glassblowing with 139 colorplates and four black/white photographs, Tina Oldknow (Curator of Modern Glass at the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York); Joseph Marioni (twice artist-in-residence at the Pilchuck Glass School); and Edward R. Quick (Curator, Presidential Materials Staff, National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C.) offer an informative text and commentary that enhances our understanding of this truly gifted man and his work. Very highly recommended for all serious personal, academic, professional, and community library collections, Dante Marioni: Blown Glass provides a "reader friendly" step-by-step depiction of the process used in the making of a blown-glass vase, a list of public collections, solo and group exhibitions, bibliography, biography, and index.

1 comments about A New Light on Tiffany: Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls.

  1. Looking into how the highly-valued Tiffany lamps and other fine objects came to be, the three authors disclose the critical, unique part Clara Driscoll had in this. Driscoll served as a major creative force for many Tiffany lamps by her own artistic sense and as director of a staff of other talented women. Recently found correspondence of Driscoll's--an Ohio native who lived from 1861 to 1944--verifies that she was mostly responsible for the classic Tiffany designs of the Wisteria, Dragonfly, and Peony.

The authors do not aim to devalue Louis Comfort Tiffany's (1848-1933) role and reputation in giving Driscoll her due. They seek mainly to lay out a broader, more informed understanding of the creation of the timeless Tiffany works. Parts of the book go beyond Driscoll's place in the company to see her as representative of sprightly, adventuresome, and bright young American woman coming into the American workforce and into large cities in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Besides Driscoll, there were a number of other similarly-talented and -natured women who contributed to the inimitable design and outstanding status of the Tiffany lamps and other objects. Collectively known as the "Tiffany Girls," many are pictured in available period photographs; and all known are given biographical notes.
