1 comments about Depression Glass Collections and Reflections: A Guide With Values (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
- I have found all of Doris Yeske's books very helpful in both the purchasing and selling of depression glass. They have also been an educational tool in determining the patterns and whether or not the piece is a repro - of which I have found many. I also (in my opinion) find her prices to be more down to earth. If you want a book that you can use - I recommend reading all of Doris Yeske's books.

2 comments about The World of Salt Shakers Antique & Art Glass Value Guide: Antique & Art Glass Value Guide.
- Collectibles books don't get much better than this. This 3rd edition, 312 page hardbound volume with beautiful laminated covers, features more than 850 full color, large, sharp, full color photos throughout. It provides a wealth of information, in addition to pictures and prices. The treasure covers Historical and Rarities, Interesting company biographies, a large sectin on repros, look alikes, re-issues and fakes. A complete pattern index is included. Values provided are 1998. Collectors of salt shakers will love this book and refer to it often. A must have for salt shaker collectors.
- This colorful volume has clearly been done by an author who is well informed and knows his fine salt shakers. Pictures are beautiful and descriptions are very clear and well done.

1 comments about Christopher Radko's Ornaments.
- CHRISTOPHER RADKO'S ORNAMENTS tells the history of Radko and his ornament business. Almost single-handedly, according to author Olivia Bell Buehl, Radko brought back the mouth-blown, hand-painted ornaments back to the American Chrstmas tree. Any one who collects Christmas tree ornaments, or who would like to will find this book informative. Each chapter describes one aspect of the design and manufacture of ornaments. Illustrations are used thematically in each chapter. These include Santa Claus, snowmen, and finials. Each ornament is listed in the index by name and serial number, to allow a reader to find it on the primary or secondary market. Ideas for the ligting of the tree, use of ornaments in bowls, on mantles, around pictures or windows fill the book with ideas which a person could decorate any room, even a hospital room for the bed bound at Chrstmas time. The information is concise, though the writing style tends not to be as exacting, depending on the paraphrased quote, rather than the author's own thoughts. Anyone who enjoys Christmas ornaments, who enjoys Christmas, and who wants some new and different decorating ideas should add this book to their library.

- After looking over this book, I find that the author does not show a grasp of the patterns he is writing about. His pictures do not agree with the pattern he is writing about. See the picture for Jubilee. (it is not Jubilee) Should have rechecked before book was printed.

4 comments about Higgins: Adventures in Glass.
- A "Must Have" for any serious Higgins collector. There is an almost overwhelming amount of information presented in a most organized manner. So many wonderful color photographs that I went into sensory overload. Loads of great, historical information and imagery. The only down side of the book is that the price guide is not representative of current market values but if looked at properly will still give you a good idea of how one pattern will relate to another in value. I wish other collectable genres had reference guides of this caliber.
- This is truly a masterpiece of editing. The author has truly done an outstanding job. This is a MUST book for any serious Higgins collector as well as anyone who enjoys beautiful glass. The author is certainly to be commended for this one of a kind work.
- If you want to collect Higgins glass, this book is an absolute must-have. The prices are outdated; with the recent death of Michael Higgins, I have seen pieces sell for double or triple the book's values. This is much more than a price guide, though. This book details the history of Higgins glass, their techniques, and how to identify what is and is not Higgins glass. There are several beautiful color pictures on almost every page, and I enjoy looking at them almost as much as I enjoy looking at the pieces in my collection.
- this book starts to do justice to the wonderful inventive genius of michael and francis higgins, craftsmen and artistis, and the developers of advanced fused glass techniques. The book is steep at $60, but it's worth it for the great number of color plates. . . and if you know higgins glass, you'll know that a great many photographs were needed!
the only downside might be that the authors focussed too much on the dearborn years of mass-produced fused glass goods. This neglects somewhat the great variety and depth of studio work done by the higgins. But perhaps this is an apt subject for "adventures in glass, volume II".

1 comments about Ikora and Myra Glass by WMF.
- Excellent coverage for the 150th anniversary of the German metal and glass producer Württemburgische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF). Includes many photos of glass products and process used to manufacture them, reprints of product catalogues from 1928 to 1951, identifies all model numbers for the same period, and a complete written history of the WMF Ikora and Myra art glass lines. I look froward to equally comprhensive coverage from the other volumes in the series on WMF Ikora metal, lighting, and jewelery products.

5 comments about The Encyclopedia of Modern Marbles, Spheres, & Orbs.
- A perfect book for the marble collector, this is the kind of book that can be read a hundred times and learn something new about the marble collectors world. Beautiful pictures and it shows that a lot of work went in to this book! Looking forward to more books by Mark Block!
- While Block's first coffee table book on the subject of contemporary marbles was a fine piece of work, his second book is not, and anybody who says it is is either blind or crazy or a homer. Marble collectors love to see nice pictures of beautiful marbles, and while there are indeed LOTS of marble pictures in this book to look at, the vast majority of them are of such poor quality that it actually becomes a painful process to keep flipping the pages to see more of them. But that's not the worst part of the book. More egregious than the photography is the organization of the book. It is a haphazard mess of marbles, with no clear sense of how they are grouped and why. It actually starts out as if it's going somewhere, but then completely falls apart, as if the author was being whipped while on a chain gang in order to get the book finished by some crazy deadline. It ended up being maddening to flip through, since marbles were thrown together in bizarre ways that just leave you frustrated.
In summary, save your money and find places online instead where you can find some true quality pictures of marbles with MUCH better stories and descriptions behind them. Hopefully somebody else comes out with a better book to redeem the marble community from the pain of this one.
- This book is clearly one of only two that specialize in the hot collectible of contemporary marbles. Mark Block is the reknown and acknowledged expert in the field. This is easily seen in the in-depth research he has done, the cooperation he received from the Corning Museum of Glass, and all of the beautiful works that were incorporated into this exciting volume. I only hope that future books by Mark Block will meet or exceed his own expectations. If they do, the glass community will be all the better for it. He is truly Mr. Ambassador when it comes to contemporary marbles and related art glass.
- For those of you who aren't aware Mark Block was convicted of a felony for screwing around with marble artist creations. He was also charged with faking marks on marbles to increase value although these were dropped as part of a plea deal. So my question is what publisher in their right mind releases a book supposedly by an expert who has a felony conviction specifically related to the subject he is an expert in? Obviously not a very conscientious publisher. Let me be the first to publicly state that I will boycott all Schiffer books until they get this criminal off their roster -- and no this doesn't apply to the rest of the Blocks. For those of you who want to support criminal behavior and want to buy this book beware the pictures aren't good, each one has a reflection on it, and the marbles in the book are certainly not first quality. By the way Mark, how many of the marbles in the book that were given as "donations" actually were "mistakenly" sold by you or your brother? Oh, I'm sorry you can't sell marbles - that's against your probation isn't it?
- I haven't been collecting art glass marbles all that long, but I do know a beautiful book when I see one. The pictures are fantastic, clear and cover every possible type of handmade marble. I haven't had time to read the entire book, but I have paged through it several times just to marvel at the photography. What I have read seems to be concise and well written. I'm sure that I will find it to be a valuable source of reference for years to come.
There's only one problem... every page shows a different type of marble that I need to add to my collection... this could get expensive!

1 comments about Whitefriars Glass: The Art of James Powell & Sons.
- A perfect reference for the collector with alot of colour photographs. The book tends to concentrate on the later range of glassware from Whitefriars, particularly during the Baxter era. This comes as no surprise since the book was written for the Manchester City Arts Gallery exhibition of Whitefriars glass and there was a great deal of collaboration between the books authors and the late Geoffrey Baxter. The book is quoted as a reference on alot of EBay auctions of Whitefriars glass.
