2 comments about Starting To Collect Antique Glass (Starting to Collect Series).
- I found this book to be interesting regarding the history of glass and full of great photos, but a bit irrelevant unless you live in Europe or have access to old European glass. If I travel to Europe, I will find the book helpful as a resource.
- This book is divided into well-defined chapters on just about everything you want to know about Antique glass from manufacture to design to availability. There are lost of color pictures that are well described. What it is not is a price catalog. This book is well worth the price even if you have some to the same information already.

1 comments about Stained Glass Windows And Doors: Antique Gems for Today's Homes.
- The 1st book was incredible! I loved it..the windows were exciting and different...and I couldn't stop picking it up and looking at more windows and designs.....The second book, for me, doesn't have such incredible window designs...a bit more ordinary..however, what I do like is that it's laid out a bit more in order..and a lot more informative history on the stained glass...Prices are really irrelevant..as they'll be outdated in a few years...There's such a great need for books on stained glass...and these certainly are of help. A book on just American Stained Glass windows would be appropriate..and then one specializing on Victorian styles, A&C styles, and then regional styles...along with how they were used in the homes..and maybe a collection with period pictures...etc..there's lots more that needs to be printed!

2 comments about Bottles from the Deep: Patent Medicines, Bittlers, & Other Bottles from the Wreck of the Steamship Republic.
- Very enjoyable read. Brief, but succinct in discussion of the bottle types recovered from the wreck. Provides interesting history of the various bottle types. Great photography of the recovered treasures. I read it in a couple of hours. Can't wait for Oddysey to publish more on their discoveries and recoveries. Be sure to read The Lost Gold of the Republic for an excellent presentation of the history and discovery of the SS Republic and the development of the Oddysey Marine Company. It was extremely well written and an enjoyable read. Both books are highly recommended for the shipwreck buff or treasure collector.
- "Bottles from the Deep" is, I think, the first published (in the paper sense) product of Odyssey Marine Exploration's impressive archaeological excavation of the steamship Republic, and doubtless it will not be the last. Some archaeologists shrink from the idea of a marine salvage firm doing good archaeology, but with the Republic Odyssey has shown how it can be done; the Republic fieldwork is a model for deep-ocean archaeological investigation. What remains is to see how the data recovered are used and shared with the profession and the public. Ellen Gerth's book suggests that Odyssey will do well in this regard, too. The book provides a concise summary of the history of the shipwreck and its excavation, and then plunges into fascinating details about the various types represented among the thousands of bottles recovered. Stephen Sweet's Infallible Liniment, Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup -- it's amazing our ancestors survived the 19th century swilling such stuff. Very handsomely illustrated, Gerth's little book is a contribution to the archaeological literature that's fun to read. Not too big to be a stocking stuffer for one's favorite bottle nut, either.

1 comments about American Cut and Engraved Glass: The Brilliant Period in Historical Perspective.
- This is a beautiful book that has exquisite B&W photos of cut and engraved glass. Of particular interest is the historical information about the glass industry, as well as the fascinating text on the step-by-step process of making and cutting glass. If you are looking for an informational book about the cut glass industry, I would recommend this one. If, however, you are looking for a book that can be used as a guide when purchasing or selling cut glass, this is probably not the best resource. There were particular patterns I was searching for from a New York based glass company that were not mentioned in the book. In fact, of the approx. 60 patterns this company made before it closed in 1933, only one is referenced.

3 comments about Egyptian Faience and Glass (Shire Egyptology).
- A very useful book for anyone interested in egyptian faience, and glass, or someone who collects egyptian ushaptis.
- Ancient Egyptian faience is a marvel to look at, leading to the question of how they were made such a beauty. This book answers it brilliantly, and also details the history of the vitreous materials from the Predynastic onwards. Items made included amulets and large vessels : Why were they made ? How was glass manufactured ? The perceived mysteries behind the Ancient Egyptian masterpieces are themselves explained in this masterful book. Required reading for laypeople and scholars.
- This is a book full on knowledge, that tempts you into a thirst for more. You can almost feel the peices described and imagine the surroundings of ancient times. After reading the book I had a strong earge to go back to basics' and follow the ancient ways with new enllightement. Many thanks to Paul.
