1 comments about The Art of Glass: Art Nouveau to Art Deco.

  1. Fine pictures with solid historical copy. I would rate "The Art of Glass" five stars if it were't for the exclusion of the glass of Frederick Carder, not only a major contributor to the genre, but designer/maker of some of the most beautiful glass objects of any period ever made.

2 comments about Collecting Antique Marbles: Identification & Price Guide.

  1. As the wife of a train collector, I found this book very familiar territory -- but even better. Baumann's grasp of history, archeology, industrial technique and the esthetic of marble art is wonderful. This was a great read (and look--the color plates are a real asset), as well as an excellent reference.

  2. 176 pages with 1,200 color pictures and many black and white plates. This book really provides a comprehensive history of marbles including how to classify and collect them. Details on clay and crockery, china, swirls, solids, opaques and sulphides. Transition and machine-mades, reproductions and toys are discussed. A comprehensive price guide is included, and a marble club listing. Add this book to your collection if you're a new marble collector or a long time collector. A great reference source.

1 comments about Murano - Island of Glass.

  1. Virtually anything that carries the label Venetian Glass will not have been made in the city of Venice but on the Island of Murano. In the late thirteenth century, all of the glassblowers in Venice were ordered to move to the island because of the fear of fires from their glass furnaces and the factories have been there ever since.

This book has a multitude of beautiful photographs of examples of the glass blowers art. We always tend to use the terms glass blowers, although some glass items are pressed into moulds, a cheaper option but one that still gets stunning results.

Who better to write a book on Murano glass than the director of the Murano Glass Museum, who is obviously extremely knowledgeable about Murano glass in particular and the art of glass manufacture in general. There is still a thriving glass industry on the island and to a degree this is unsurprising as several hundred years ago the artisans of the time were banned from setting up in business anywhere else. To do so was to risk death in the night.

This book covers virtually everything there is to know about glass and its manufacture. From the tools the craftsmen themselves use to the different formulas for different types of glass. Right through to the techniques used to achieve the multitude of end products that are available. Many people will have a piece of glass that they know nothing about and in a number of cases that piece of glass will be Murano glass, particularly if it is well designed and colourful.

1 comments about Miller's: Perfume Bottles: A Collector's Guide (Miller's Collector's Guides).

  1. I found this little book very helpful with a wealth of information, on collecting all types of Perfume Bottles including non-commercials (scent bottles without perfume) as well as commercials (bottles sold with perfume). It covers the art of perfume bottle making & some history from ancient times thru todays avant-garde creations such as: Pomanders, Victorian Vinaigrettes, all types of materials that were used, some famous name commerical houses, novelities & minis just to name a few areas. Each area is covered with nice photo's of the period perfume bottle. The is also a nice chapter on collecting advice including what to collect, tips, care & cleaning. This would be a great book for those who want to start collecting perfume bottles or those who are already collectors. This book should be added to your Perfume or Vanity Items library.

  1. This is an excellent resource for American Brilliant Cut Glass collectors. This is the second-edition of Revi's book, and is better and full of more pictures. The pictures of the cut glass are of great quality, and could not look better. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT AND RESOURCEFUL BOOK. 5 Stars.

3 comments about Mt. Washington Art Glass Plus Webb Burmese: Identification & Value Guide.

  1. What's not to like? The pictures are beautiful and the information is good. Prices are accurate too. One of the few items in my short history of collecting glass that I've found actually can be bought and sold for the prices listed. My only complaint is that a number of times they picture the same item twice. We love pictures, surely there were enough items available that pictures didn't have to be repeated.

  2. Author Kenneth M. Wilson passed away before publication of his opus MT. WASHINGTON & PAIRPOINT GLASS - but he reviewed and approved the page proofs and had written two chapters of the projected second volume (which will be prepared in future using his research materials and illustrations), so nothing lacks in MT. WASHINGTON except the author's ability to enjoy his finished product. The Mt. Washington Glass Works and the companies after it make up America's second-oldest glass manufacturer: the factory opened for business in the mid-1800s and spun off another business in silver plating. Glass collectors will find MT. WASHINGTON & PAIRPORT GLASS the definitive encyclopedia of the manufacturer's works: the volume has been long awaited by collectors and provides an extensive company history to compliment an in-depth coverage of its many products. Chapters come packed with black and white and color illustrations and photos, providing descriptions and color illustrations of all glasses and silver-plated wares and reviewing design, craftsmanship and unique attributes. Add indexes of patents and trademarks, glass decorators who operated in the region from 1867 to 1902, and illustrations of ads, production records and more and you have a truly outstanding reference.

  3. We have waited a very long time for a comprehensive book on this beautiful American art glass and Betty Sisk has provided us with a treat for the eyes! The photos are beautiful in full color and plentiful. I did not know that such examples of this artform existed until feasting on this book. All collectors of art glass must add this to their libraries. The information with each type of glass is insightful and just enough to ready the reader for the pictures to follow. The insight provided is both scholarly and from a collector's perspective. Prices are given in a fair range to give a fair market value. And what pictures there are to enjoy! Many glass types are well covered for the first time. This book will set a very high standard by which all other references on this glass will be judged in the years to come. We indeed owe the author a debt due to this subject's neglect until now. This is a must buy! We have waited a long time to get this book-thanks Betty!!
