5 comments about Pyrex: The Unauthorized Collector's Guide (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
- Very nice book on Pyrex ware. It is a nice guidebook to have for collectors.
- First, I want to point out that except for one other of the 7 reviews before mine, all were written previous to 2008--the copyright date of this book. So those reviews DO NOT pertain to this edition; they pertain to earlier editions. I have been using the previous (2002) edition of this book, so I was delighted when I discovered that a 2008 edition was coming out. It has a nice, new updated cover--very appealing. But it looks like that's about all that's changed. From what I can tell, the inside of the book is exactly the same--same pictured items, with no changes that I can see. I assume the prices are updated, although I can't really tell because I can't compare them with the old edition (which was from the library). Even though I got the book on sale, it was a big disappointment and not worth my money--I can go back to the library and get the same old thing!
- With every book on collectibles people will say or write they couldn't find what they were looking for. This is true with antique and collectibles books but we need to determine if a book of this type is relevant to our needs.
As a seller of antiques and glass collectibles I find the Pyrex "Unauthorized Collector's Guide" has a wealth of information, if you will, a cornucopia of Pyrex history, excellent pictures, descriptions and range of valuation, which should serve the most discerning individual.
I would prefer a hardcover book and that is my only complaint but that's being too snobbish. The glossy pages fill your eyes with cookware, flameware, ovenware, Pyrex colors, glassware and even takes on some unknown patterns. I discovered so much more about Pyrex than I ever expected.
Identification of merchandise is of utmost importance for my online store and the customer should expect that. I am a stickler for accuracy and in a very short time this book has help me merchandise my Pyrex inventory for sale and has encouraged me to look for much more and not be afraid to make future Pyrex investments for my store.
This book will now accompany me on my antiquing journeys and will come in handy when it's time to identify, value, and purchase. It should serve you well in your library for collecting your favorite Pyrex. Indeed!
- Big fat glossy softcovered waste of my money. Way too many pages on boring items like glass pie plates etc. Soooooo glad I didn't buy book on ebay though--that seller wanted 27 + shipping. The corning ware & vision cookware book is much better then this Pyrex book.
- The book I ordered arrived in excellent condition and was delivered in a timely fashion.

3 comments about Glass Candlesticks of the Depression Era: Identification and Value Guide.
- Gene & Cathy Florence's Glass Candlesticks Of The Depression Era, Volume 2: Identification And Value provides a secondary volume of addition candles collected since the author's first volume, presenting the same easy organization by maker and the fine color photos which lend to quick identification. From patterns and color notes to sizes and valuation, Glass Candlesticks, Volume 2 is a pick any owner of Volume 1 needs.
- Very beautiful pictures, but limited. Wish Florence has used a different format instead of listing by color. It would have been helpful if he had stated the colors and etchings available for each candlestick.
- This book is a very colorful and well written book. However, I expected to see many more pictures of candlesticks than are offered in this book. There is 165 pages of candlesticks with 2 - 3 examples per page, which is probably around the amount made during the Depression Era. Florence gives the company name, the pattern, color, size and mint value. The photos are great and I believe this book is valuable to those just getting into collecting candlesticks from this era.

5 comments about Field Guide to Pattern Glass.
- i am not new to collecting depression era glass, i was really into it in the early 80's, but its been a while and i thought a few good books might help me brush up... i shopped around, read the reviews and chose this as one of two that i ordered... WAS I DISAPPOINTED IN THIS ONE! all this book is, is a large compilation of drawings, NO DESCRIPTIONS, NO PATTERN NAMES, just drawings... even if, no ESPECIALLY if you know nothing about depression glass, this is definitely NOT the book for you! i was completely disappointed... sent it back immediately, trust me, try warman's or Gene Florence if you want to actually learn something about depression glass...
- I have found this book very helpful in identifying pattern glass. My copy is worn and soiled from being used so much. One of the best investments I have made in years...This book list hundreds of patterns shown in clear drawings. Great book for beginners.
- Mollie Helen McCain's Field Guide To Pattern Glass is a winner, covering all styles of pattern glass and pairing small black and white illustrations with clear descriptions. Those already familiar with pattern glass will find it a good solid reference.
- This is the best book ive found yet, and I have many books on pattern glass, If your going to buy just one book on pattern glass this is the one! great detail, very large variety of examples,
- "Pattern Glass" by Mollie Helen McCain is an excellent identification guide for early american pattern glass. The patterns are organized by characteristics and pictured clearly. I have had much success in finding the pattern name for glass. As a price guide it leaves a lot to be desired. Patterns are grouped in one of six catagories and priced according to catagory. As both a collector and dealer I find that many patterns are considerably under priced, and that rarity of individual items of a pattern are not considered.

1 comments about The Art of Glass: Art Nouveau to Art Deco.
- Fine pictures with solid historical copy. I would rate "The Art of Glass" five stars if it were't for the exclusion of the glass of Frederick Carder, not only a major contributor to the genre, but designer/maker of some of the most beautiful glass objects of any period ever made.

2 comments about Collecting Antique Marbles: Identification & Price Guide.
- As the wife of a train collector, I found this book very familiar territory -- but even better. Baumann's grasp of history, archeology, industrial technique and the esthetic of marble art is wonderful. This was a great read (and look--the color plates are a real asset), as well as an excellent reference.
- 176 pages with 1,200 color pictures and many black and white plates. This book really provides a comprehensive history of marbles including how to classify and collect them. Details on clay and crockery, china, swirls, solids, opaques and sulphides. Transition and machine-mades, reproductions and toys are discussed. A comprehensive price guide is included, and a marble club listing. Add this book to your collection if you're a new marble collector or a long time collector. A great reference source.

1 comments about Murano - Island of Glass.
-
Virtually anything that carries the label Venetian Glass will not have been made in the city of Venice but on the Island of Murano. In the late thirteenth century, all of the glassblowers in Venice were ordered to move to the island because of the fear of fires from their glass furnaces and the factories have been there ever since.
This book has a multitude of beautiful photographs of examples of the glass blowers art. We always tend to use the terms glass blowers, although some glass items are pressed into moulds, a cheaper option but one that still gets stunning results.
Who better to write a book on Murano glass than the director of the Murano Glass Museum, who is obviously extremely knowledgeable about Murano glass in particular and the art of glass manufacture in general. There is still a thriving glass industry on the island and to a degree this is unsurprising as several hundred years ago the artisans of the time were banned from setting up in business anywhere else. To do so was to risk death in the night.
This book covers virtually everything there is to know about glass and its manufacture. From the tools the craftsmen themselves use to the different formulas for different types of glass. Right through to the techniques used to achieve the multitude of end products that are available. Many people will have a piece of glass that they know nothing about and in a number of cases that piece of glass will be Murano glass, particularly if it is well designed and colourful.
