1 comments about The Colors of Heisey Glass.

  1. Colored Heisey glass made from 1896-1958 is explored in a series of fine photos - over five hundred color presentations - and provides colors defined with production dates and histories. From pattern numbers and names to measurements and values, The Colors of Heisey Glass is an excellent reference and recommended pick for any glass collector.

5 comments about Glass Hen on Nest Covered Dishes: Identification & Value Guide.

  1. Not a really good reference guide especially for the ones who need the most guidance...like a new collector. Too complicated.

  2. Wow. It is rare to find an antiques book like this in any field-- Smith's book is authoritative, complete, easy to use, and profusely illustrated.

THis book covers all of the known hen on nest dishes made in America and abroad from the 1800s through today. Photos are big, easy to see, and really helpful. If you buy this book, you will definitely be able to identify the maker of your hen on nest dish, and to learn a good bit about the manufacturer. I especially appreciated the sections on Atterbury, Challinor Taylor, Flaccus, and Portieux/Vallerysthal. Those who collect more modern dishes will appreciate the Westmoreland, Fenton, Hazel-Atlas, Indiana, and dozens of other sections.

Shirley Smith's book has been reviewed the National Milk Glass Collectors Society and has been endorsed as accurate and excellent. I personally found it to be exactly what I needed and incredibly helpful.

The only thing I would caution readers about it the "price guide" aspect. Antique prices fluctuate dramatically and regularly, and prices for hen on nest dishes have dropped in the age of online auctions.

  3. This is a comprehensive book on glass hen-on-nest covered dishes. Kudos to Shirley Smith for a job very well done. She has made it quite easy to identify most any hen-on-nest dish you will encounter. It is a must have for any collector.

  4. like it picture are great way to compair. Need to have a few more definitons on Glass type and colors.

  5. Shirley Smith's GLASS HEN ON NEST COVERED DISHES IDENTIFICATION & VALUE GUIDE packs color photos on nearly every page of its value guide, and is a pick for any who frequent flea markets or garage sales in search of glass hen on nest covered dishes. From American to Asian and European productions, identifying marks, written descriptions, and comparisons and contrasts between makers and items seek to clarify the collecting experience to avoid confusion between makers and products.

1 comments about Warman's Lalique: Identification and Price Guide.

  1. I bought this book to help me price things for online purchases and estate sales. It's a pretty book. The pictures are fantastic. The organization is also good. Items are listed alphabetically by category, such as ash trays, bowls, figurines, vases. Within each category items are listed alphabetically by pattern name. This makes it pretty easy to find items. Prices are under each picture, as well as which company signature is used, which is convenient and useful for authentication. Some pictures show several items and occassionally it isn't clear whether the price is per item or for the entire photo. Unfortunately, the book just doesn't cover enough items to be useful. Most of what I try to look up is not in the book. It's a well organized book that needs to be four times bigger! So if you want a nice paperback coffee table book, this is it. If you're looking for one to help you with purchases, find something else more comprehensive.

1 comments about Scandinavian Glass 1930-2000: Fire & Sea.

  1. The Schiffer publications know more about glass and ceramics in Scandinavia than the Scandinavians know themselves. High class pictures, almost photographic art, very reliable references. The only slightly negative opinion at us, is the unbalanced presentation of Norwegian Glass and Ceramic design.

5 comments about Crackle Glass: Identification and Value Guide.

  1. Just reading the page preview permitted by Amazon to determine if you want to order the book, I see misinformation. "Probably Blenko" doesn't show a lot of research. One piece of glass marked "probably Blenko" is Kanawha and is in their old catalogs. I have one in green and another in brown. I do give kudos to the authors for actually interviewing the folks at Hamon Glass. And the spelling for the owners of Kanawha should be Merritt.

  2. The bottom line on this book is that it is a " must have " for anyone that is interested in glass period. The pictures are very well done along with the knowledge of crackle glass. It is hard to believe that this is the first book ever on the subject. I will buy the two others right away! Stan and Arlene Weitman , thank you .

  3. When I first flipped through this book, I thought it showed some promise. Now having gone through it page by page I've come to realize how wrong it is to judge a book by it's cover(or flipping through it in this case). To say this book is full of mistakes is an understatement. In fact since going through this book I think it can be blamed for a fair amount of misidentified crackle glass on the internet. There are so many misidentified pieces I couldn't list them in the space alloted. I understand that guide books are simply that, but the fact of the matter is most folks will quote from them as gospel.
The images (large amount of cruets) are very repetative. After a while they all seem to run together in a mismash of misidentified Blenko, Rainbow, Pilgrim et. al.
Save your money, buy the Leslie Pina books, while they aren't perfect either, they are a heck of a lot better than this "guide book". While Pina's books are not cheap, you know what the saying is "you get what you paid for". I really wish I had not paid for this book.

  4. This book provides a wonderful display of crackle glass with vibrant photographs and detail. It provides information to help the collector assess the value in regards to color and type of crackle glass. A wonderful addition to the Weitman's first book on crackle glass. I would like to see more unique pieces. There is repetitive glass in this book, however they differ slightly and do offer valuable information. A wonderful book for the beginner as well as advanced collector. Five stars!

  5. This book also comes with a history of crackle glass and overshot glass-very informative. Pictures are large with description and pricing listed underneath photo.

3 comments about Viking Glass 1944-1970.

  1. As a person very attracted to the colors & shapes of Viking Glass, I have enjoyed this book immensley! I have been able to identify most all pieces in my collection from this book and learned about new patterns, colors, shapes to look for in the future! I'm also looking forward to seeing a new book that covers 70's & beyond! Hope he's working on one! Thank you Dean Six!

  2. As a glass collecting enthusiast I have read my share of collecting books through the years, and I have to say that this is the most visually appealing and informative books I have ever read. Viking made beatiful and colorful pieces of glass, and Dean Six's book captures the beauty of the glass while putting the pieces in a logical and historical context.

I highly recommend this book not only for the serious Viking collector, but for anyone who collect glass, is interested in history or enjoys a beautiful decorative arts book.

  3. Beautifully compiled by Dean Six, the Schiffer edition of Viking Glass 1944-1970 is a superbly organized and presented collector's price guide enhanced with more 520 color photographs of the exceptional, painstakingly handmade glassware produced by the Viking Glass Company of New Martinsville, West Virginia from 1944 to 1970. Glorious color and design mark virtually every page of this beautiful display volume which will prove an invaluable reference for professional dealers and dedicated collectors.

1 comments about Aggies, Immies, Shooters, and Swirls: The Magical World of Marbles.

  1. There are several things that make this book a stand-out. The first is the basic information about the types of marbles (antique, machine-made, modern) and the makers of the marbles. If you're looking for extensive historical information, this may not be the book for you. But if you collect marbles and are interested in good, basic information as well as tons of photos (most enlarged so you can see every detail) of a wide variety of marbles, this book fills the bill. While I'm no marble expert, I learned a grat deal from reading this one!
