2 comments about Crafting With Copper: 27 Creative Projects for Home & Garden.

  1. It was okay but I really am looking for much harder project information. I am wanting to make a rainchain and the example in the book was much too simple. I'm looking for harder 'how to' examples.

  2. This was a gift for my daughter as she has always loved the copper sculptures. Easy to read and a great tool for her.

5 comments about Imagine That!: Activities and Adventures in Surrealism (Art Explorers).

  1. I volunteer at my childs school in the art master piece program. This book was a tremendous help in coming up with ideas for the students to do.

  2. Joining others in the 'Art Explorers' series for elementary-level readers is Imagine That: Activities And Adventures In Surrealism: a solid introduction for the entire family which focuses on the surrealist movement for an age group which normally doesn't receive this kind of depth in a surrealist exploration. Six great Surrealist artists invite kids to view contrasting works and use their own interpretative skills, encouraging exploration through hands-on activities. These reinforcing activities make Imagine That an exceptional introduction.

  3. "What is a television... to man, who has only to shut his eyes to see the most inaccessible regions of the seen and the never seen?" Salvador Dali

"Do not proceed according to rules and principles, but paint what you observe and feel." Camille Pissarro

"Nobody will give you freedom-you have to take it." Meret Oppenheim

"To be a Surrealist...means barring from your mind all remembrance of what you have seen, and being always on the lookout for what has never been." Rene Magritte

Picture This and Imagine That introduce children to great artists, art concepts and allow them to become artists themselves. They are the first two books in the Art Explorers series. Picture This introduces Impressionism, Imagine That acquaints us with Surrealism. The books begin with a Note To Adults, telling how to help children explore that particular school of art. This is followed by a Note to Kids, introducing them to that school of art and to the book. This is followed by one work each from 5 or 6 artists that are representative of that particular school. Each work of art has accompanying kid-friendly information about the art and the artist, and discussion questions. Then there are a few pages of art projects, to allow the child to respond by experimenting with different techniques and materials. The instructions for the projects are clear and include illustrations of a work in progress, and examples of actual children's art projects. In the back there is a little additional information about each artist.
For example, after looking at Personal Values by Rene Magritte, children cut pictures out of a magazine to "Make a fantasy room where everyday things are seen in crazy mixed-up ways.". Step by step instructions are explained and illustrated. Several examples of completed projects by children 8-9 years old are included. The second project is a cut paper collage of "your own sky, where everything is mixed up and anything can float or fly". Again, there are two full pages of instructions and examples. These two projects require colored paper, glue, scissors, old magazines, and drawing materials. Of course some of the other projects will most likely involve a trip to the craft store, but some, like these, will not.
On afternoons when the weather is crummy and there is a space available in the house somewhere to make a controlled mess, you could probably scrounge up stuff to keep the kids amused for a little while with one of these projects.
These books are recommended for ages 5-12, but the nature of the projects is such that children of different ages can participate together in many of them.
You can see some of the author's work on line and explore modern art at www.moma.org/artsafari . Look at some examples of modern art, talk about the discussion questions, and play author or detective.

  4. "Celebrate the expressive ideas of the child-creativity is a gift to be nurtured in everyone."--Joyce Raimondo

IMAGINE THAT! is a study in the art of Surrealism that emerged after World War I. It is artists' response to the ravages of war through art that flows freely from the imagination and dreams, without deliberate purpose. From this thought process, artists' paintings evolved. Some of these artistic works were combined with images of actual objects and unusual or "bizarre" scenes. Some major artists represented in IMAGINE THAT! are:

    **Salvador Dali
    **Rene Magritte
    **Max Ernst
    **Meret Oppenheim
**Joan Miro & Frida Kahlo, who made noted contributions but were not considered "key" Surrealists

Surrealist artists encourage your imagination to run free and as topsy turvy as you like while harvesting those dream-like images. Make a surprise image creature, draw your dream, double your image, and make a collage or frottage. Start having fun in your world of imagination today.

Great stuff for tapping into young readers' and adults' creativity. Try the collograph creatures, the 3-D figurines, or the mystery box. Superb ideas for the art appreciation of the SURREALISM movement. I highly recommend IMAGINE THAT! Adults will also enjoy this one as well.

  5. This is a great book to get kids really looking at art and responding to it. The creative activities, with step-by-step directions and lots of examples of kids' art, are perfect for homeschoolers or anyone whose school district has cut arts funding, as well as those who just want to increase a child's exposure to and understanding of great art. (You should see my daughter's Surrealist place setting with totally weird food.) Fun for all ages!

5 comments about LogoLounge 2 (mini): 2,000 International Identities by Leading Designers.

  1. Lots of pictures of different logos and the book is arranged in a very orderly manner. Excellent book!

  2. I'm very impressed with the wide array and organization of this book (and the others in the series). Such great colors, and layout... everything just makes me want to study every last detail on every last page. I've bought the first two... and have added the third one to my wish list. If you want to be a good logo designer but experience "designer's block," this should get you over that hump. Thanks, Bill Gardner, and all the fabulous designers who were featured in the book!

  3. Well printed, well edited and an excellent resource for designers and creative individuals.

  4. Great for idea gathering and inspiration. It keeps you up to date with the newest logo designs.

  5. Logo Lounge 1 is a must-have in my design library - I refer to it often. Unfortunately Logo Lounge 2 seems lackluster, uninspired, and disappointing. While it contains the same quantity of logos as the first book, the solutions are much less imaginative and the profile section at the beginning is too long and the designers profiled, and their work, are difficult to relate to.

5 comments about The Complete Woodcuts of Albrecht Durer.

  1. Una gran edición a costo más que razonable para mi. Contiene todos los grabados en madera.

  2. The visuals contained in this book by Durer are very very good. It gives you a great idea of what type of talent this man had. There is a very nice transition from his earlier work to the later noticeable due to the intricate detail woodcut by woodcut. If you are a fan of Durer, or wanted to know what he was capable of creating, I highly suggest checking this one out.

  3. This book is 346 pages, not 44 as listed. Dover has a newer edition. Durer masterworks.

  4. This is the best compilation of Duerer prints I have ever seen. Duerer's talent is really downplayed in the avant-guarde scene today, but if you just look, you'll have instant appreciation. My only dissapointment was that the book does not include all of Duerer's Revelation woodcuts, which are my favorites. Anyway, I suggest you look into this book--it is amazing.

  5. Albrecht Durer was one of the most talented artists the world has ever seen, and his woodcuts, especially those of apocolyptic visions are spectacular. This book reproduces these woodcuts faithfully, and the images are not diminished by the format of the book as is often the case.

These images are the stuff of nightmares - hell, torment, torture and death, and yet the images are so startlingly realistic as to be almost poignant in their representations. Enjoyt the images for what they are - works of genius. In addition the commentary is worthwhile, with interesting observations of Durer's life and techniques.

A valuable addition to an art lover's library, but also a fascinating book for anyone who is interested in genius.

5 comments about Secrets.

  1. I fell in love with Luis Royo's art and started searching the web for everything I could find on him and the more I saw the more certain I became that he is absolutely my favorite artist EVER!! I picked out 6 books that I had determined would be the essential basic starter collection. This one was the first to arrive (although I had received the 2008 Calendar and was just awed with my first real images!). Now I am just totally IN LOVE with this man's work. After seeing this book and reading his words, I have selected another 5 books that really should be in any collection of a true fan. I cannot get enough. I intend to eventually own every book and lots of prints and posters and . . .

  2. I read the other reviews...it seems some of these people don't know Royo....this is Classic Royo: beautiful, dark and gothic-like, sexual.... it is not for those you blush at skin....but for the lover of gorgeous women and wild monster and magnificent art....if you love royo or know someone who does...get it! it is worth every cent and then some.... and the heck w/ "stories" behind the paintings....you got an imagination...USE IT!!!! that is the intent of pretty much any artist: they want you to think and use that brain and imagine...you want a story, go buy fairytales or something! this is for someone who loves art and had imagination!

  3. Secrets, other than the usual nudity, is a bit more sexually explicit than his other books other than the Prohibited books. They are mainly medieval or ancient-fantasy themes, and a few are cover arts for Gemmell books. As often, beautiful shimmery paintings and powerful women.

While I wouldn't want Royo to write a whole lot, descriptions that are a little less cryptic would be nice.

  4. Of all of the Royo books I've seen, Secrets, Malefic, and Visions are the most spectacular. The women are absolutely gorgeous, and the level of detail and hyper-realism is astonishing! If you're new to Royo, buy these three books. They emphasize fantasy illustration (as opposed to the sci-fi themes of Women and the post-apocolyptic themes of III Millenium). The quality of the artwork in III Millenium is also very good, but it has a darker, more somber tone. I'd recommend avoiding Women and Conceptions 1. They don't even come close to comparing with the four books listed above, and don't reflect the exceptional talent of Royo as an artist.

  5. great book if your looking for artistic pictures, just wonderful. But this is not a book for reading, just tells about the paintings and some have little poems.

1 comments about The Philosophy of the Visual Arts.

  1. The debate concerning the Philosophy of Art in the 20th century is made simpler and comprehensive by Professor Alperson's remarkable contribution. This anthology explores various texts by some of the biggest key players in the debate. The interdisciplinary nature of the topic allows for the inclusion of crucial texts from various experts in the field (of both philosophy and art) such as: Arthur Danto, Joseph Margolis, Timothy Binkley, Arnold Berleant, George Dickie, Erwin Panofsky, and Rudolph Arnheim-not to mention selections by Freud, Kandinsky, and Wilde. This is an excellect pedagogical device for both the student as well as the advanced scholar. Prefessor Alperson's higly readable and accurate introductory summaries preceding each section make this anthology stand out over others which simply compile essays together without unifying them into an orderly whole. Since this book was published in 1992, one can hope that professor Alperson would consider releasing a revised up to date edition; but I imagine his days at Temple University keep him pretty busy.
